Description Once again, we have a family of mourning doves in our back yard. They're always hungry, so the bird feeder has been recommissioned and is open for business.

Aww, what a wonderful shot Jean, so sharp and clear, and it's almost like he's looking straight at you too

Thanks, Thelma. He WAS looking straight at me! I photographed him sitting on a branch outside the window, and he was a bit wary when he saw me. Doves are pretty easy to photograph, though; at least they don't move about as fast as some of the smaller birds.

Thank you. I have such a big family of doves living in my yard, now. I counted 7, but there may be more!

you're going to laugh (maybe) with this comment.
I'm so crazy with straightness---you should've told the bird to stand on that twig more upright if he wanted his photo taken--or pushed him to the left alittle
Nice shot

Thank you for your helpful comment and compliment. This bird is one of seven doves that frequent the feeder.

Thank you very much, Anita. I like doves because they tend to sit quietly, making photography a lot easier. the little birds are so antsy, they never sit still for a second!

Thank you! Yes, I've got all the customers from last year (I can recognize many birds by slight defects and personality traits). Some of the pairs have been coming to the feeder for about 3 years now. I don't know where they are during summer, but they aren't hungry, so I don't feed 'em. But I saw them waiting for me to put out food the other day...they were sitting in the trees outside the windows looking in and chattering at me! It's like they all showed up at the same time, too. Weird, I know.

I guess they had a plan, before they left, they all got together and said, see you in late November

I guess they did! It was very surprising, though, to see them all assembled out there waiting for me. They have come to expect it.

Thank you very much. Mourning doves tend to sit more quietly than some of the other birds, so it's easier to get a clean picture of them. I have yet to get a good picture of a chickadee--those tiny little things just dart around so fast it's almost impossible to get a crisp image. But I keep trying!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Smokey41 In reply to desmo100 [2006-11-20 19:32:30 +0000 UTC]

Birds who sitting still are easy, but when it comes to moving around like darts, then I'm off - my camera are not fast enough, so when I got a Musvit (nearly the same as chickadee) in my lense, it's gone before I got a sharp shot

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

desmo100 In reply to Smokey41 [2006-11-21 02:55:05 +0000 UTC]

My camera has one great future: a burst mode. I can hold the shutter button down and it will fire off about 2 or 3 frames per second, so if the bird is in the frame and isn't moving at that moment, I'll get a clear shot. It's just a random hit-or-miss thing, but it works sometimes.

My camera has the same Serial-photo (5 pictures at 0,2sec.) and Auto-bracketing (3 pictures - correctly, over- and underexposed), but I have never used this, but maybe it will work on bird that won't "relax"

We have a yard full of them! They are very pretty birds, and we get one or two families every year. One year, the parents made a nest on our window sill and had two babies. That was so much fun to watch!

Lovely creature! I have an Australian raven that visits quite often now, after having arrived in the area about 4 years ago, but he/she is so shy it's hard to sneak up close enough to get a good photo, my camera not being capable of telephoto shots. I've recently observed, twice now, that if there's a little too much food for it to eat, it buries some of it the garden...in the same spot...would love to know if it remembers to retrieve it! Gorgeous birds, but loud in the morning.....

desmo100 In reply to redmatilda [2006-11-19 15:25:17 +0000 UTC]

That sounds like fun. Ravens are very smart birds and collect all sorts of things. I see them here once in awhile. The other birds don't like them, though, and pester them. I know they eat other birds' eggs and babies in spring, so I guess that's why. It seems cruel, but that's just nature.

LOL.......yes doves are always hungry. My daughter has three domestic (pets) and they love to eat. They also like bread....just tear it up in teeny pieces and toss it on the ground.

We had a little family of doves nesting on our window sill a couple of years ago. It was so fascinating to watch the eggs hatch, parents feeding the babies, and going about their parental duties in a loving way. I think doves make better parents than some humans, but they only have the little ones in the nest for a couple of weeks. They breed about 3 times a year, so they are always busy.
