Thanks. This fellow cooperated a little. As long as butterflies are feeding, you can get a bunch of shots, and one is sure to turn out. I never can catch them in mid-flight, it seems. I'm glad they settle on flowers.

Thanks so much! No, I don't mind at all...just saw your journal page and it looks gorgeous. I love it when nature/outdoor photos are assembled in one place like that. It makes for a colorful and attractive display. We surely do have a lot of talent here at DA, eh?

Thanks...I'm glad he posed for a few seconds....some butterflies are calm and some are flitty. This one was calm.

But some seem to be far more jittery than others, I've noticed.

Thanks! Yes, he's on a blooming thistle. Those things were all over the place where I went to photograph; bees and butterflies seem to love them--also goldfinches!

Thank you so much for that wonderful compliment, Nance. I certainly am happy to hear you enjoyed looking at these pretty insects...I had fun taking them, too! It's great when a few of them come out clear, too.

What a beautiful and unique shot, Jean! This guy must've been hard to shoot.

Thanks, Jenn. Butterflies are hard to capture because they are always on the move. Once they land on a flower, you have a fighting chance to get 'em! But the shutter speed has to be set high and there has to be plenty of light. I would recommend getting a 200 or 300mm zoom lens for this, though. They always fly away when one gets too close.

That's good advice! I had a hard time getting shots of some bumblebees early this week. A better camera would've been nice. I will get that Rebel sooner or later!

I hope you do, Jenn. Bumblebees? I have YET to get a good bumblebee pic! For some odd reason, they never come out crisp looking...they are always soft looking. I think bees move a lot more than we think they do.

I usually don't have such good luck, but since there was plenty of light, I used a fast shutter speed and was able to stop down some of the constant motion. Wish I could do better with birds!

I do have birds, but I wish I could get some better ones....I see problems with most of my bird pics (camera shake mostly).

Oh, I know what you mean! I can't get close to them either. They have really sharp eyes and senses, so I'm lucky to get within 6 feet of them. I used my 300mm zoom for these.

I'll do anything it takes, short of breaking the law. I've heard of people catching bugs and butterflies and putting them in the fridge for a few hours, then posing them on some natural background, and letting them go when they "come to." Not quite the way I want to do business, however!

Yeah... me either... I don't want to kill something to take it's picture either. Universities actually encourage freezing lady bugs for 5 minutes so you can pictures for cataloging but not my cup of tea. It's cheating and I think you run a risk of killing the little guys.

Yep, I agree; there's just something unseemly about it. It just feels "wrong-ish".
