Description Yesterday was Butterfly Day! I saw so many of them....some I'd never seen before. This is one of them, and I have no idea what it's called; any advice would be appreciated.

Update: I just found out what this is: a common Buckeye butterfly, Junonia coenia. There are numerous references to it on Google, with pictures to match. I also found it it my Audubon butterfly guide!

A Buckeye Butterfly huh? Well, I am from the Buckeye. I don't believe I've ever seen one of these here. He/She is a beauty. Great capture.

They seem to be local to our area...I found the idenitification in Audubon's guide to butterflies. I've found that their names don't always reflect where they live.

Thank you! I'll bet it would make a great gradient for Apo. I might even try it!

Me too ! I have such a wallpaper collection, like you can't believe. And I pull gradients from them all the time. Even with all the gradients available in the newer version, still sometimes I'm unhappy.
You know how sometimes the image demands it's own colors ? Does that make sense ? Anyhow, that's usually when I go searching.

desmo100 In reply to laurengary [2006-09-06 19:25:08 +0000 UTC]

YES! I surely do know what you mean when you say an image demands its own coloring! I am always tweaking gradients, toning them up or down, when I generate an image. Accepting someone else's coloring is like painting a portrait, then contracting it out to be colored. Color is integral to art.

laurengary In reply to desmo100 [2006-09-06 19:38:33 +0000 UTC]

Me too ! I almost never pick a gradient & keep the default colors, I'm always playing with them. To me, color in an abstract is what often sets the mood. People are sensitive to color, I think anyway, & the right or wrong shade can make or break an image.
Though there are those times when I say " the heck with everyone, I like this color" & it bombs. Oh well.....
Though apparently great minds think alike !

Sometimes my best-loved works bomb, while my ho-hums get rave reviews! Go figure! But then there are times when I just KNOW I have a "hit," and I'm proven right by the deviants who watch me! That is SO rare, but deeply gratifying.

Yeah... I know the feeling. Something'll pop up, & you look at it & go .." YES " ... no more words are needed. You sit back in your chair, look at it for a while more... & hit render.

I don't agree. Your work is as good as anyone's here on DA. I believe all good artists suffer insecurity. This is what forces us to grow and stretch.

I think you're 100% right there, Rock. I feel downhearted about my work so much of the time, but then I just get mad and do it again til I get it right! Guess we all have that kind of striving for perfection that keeps us sharp, but also keeps us so frustrated!

Thank you very much for your comment and . I've been 'butterfly starved' all summer, and now there are tons of them, it seems. Didn't think I'd see a black swallowtail this year, but I lucked out!

Well, I live in northern Europe and we don't see swallowtail very often and if, that the European Swallowtail, yellow with black makings, but it very, very, VERY rare in my country

.... and your welcome

That is interesting. We have lots of Tiger Swallowtails, Black Swallowtails, Monarchs, and other smaller ones around here. But I haven't seen a Zebra Swallowtail in many years. I'm wondering if they are gone forever? Small changes in the weather and their environment can make a difference.

Smokey41 In reply to desmo100 [2006-08-30 19:06:45 +0000 UTC]

Weather and environment do a lot! Our problem is mostly agroculture - everything must be so clean, no weed or wild flowers
I caught one E. Swallowtailed when I was a kid, in Italy (summer vacation) and that the only one I've seen, but I know they come here every year
