Description
Here's some cross sections of the cupcakes I made so you can see their insides. The Rarity one didn't turn out like I had hoped (purple with dark purple marble) but oh well. That's still the brightest rainbow cupcake I've ever seen.I'm thinking of maybe making these to sell at cons...

The colors are a little weird for Celestia and Twilight but it still looks good. I like how clean the edge of the frosting looks. I'm guessing Luna colors would be impossible, making transparent cake O_o.

Just remember to use buttercream frosting and not whipped topping like I did. The fondant doesn't like whipped topping.

I would if they'd allow food to be sold in Artist Alley. That and I have a full time job and these cupcakes are a lot of work. Making a huge batch to sell would just be too much for me.

Just SakuraCon in Seattle. But I won't be able to sell any cupcakes there unfortunately. They wouldn't let me sell food unless I convinced my boss to do something with our bakery... maybe next year.

we have a maid cafe at our con in Atlanta; I know you aren't local (I'm assuming you actually live in Seattle), but I wonder if something like that would be possible at AWA?

I currently don't have the ability to send cupcakes (though I may in the future), but it would be possible to send the cutie mark toppers that can be placed on cupcakes there. I would love to help do that! Maybe even with some other fandom toppers. Let's talk.

HI! I absolutely LOVE your cupcakes! They are so awesome and are 20% cooler than an ordinary cupcake. Before winter break, I wanted to do something special for my fellow bronies and thought this was the PERFECT idea. But the thing is im a newbie at baking. I was wondering if you could tell me how you made the cutie marks or if there was an easier way to make them. Also, what kind of icing did you use? Thanks!

For these I used whipped topping, but it's too moist and will melt the fondant which is not good. I learned that after doing these. Buttercream frosting works much better for icing, and you can either make that yourself (this is a good recipe: [link] ) or you can buy a tub of it (though it doesn't taste as good.) In the recipe you can replace Vanilla extract with any other flavoring to get, say, peppermint frosting! Just play around. Remember the tastes you like with other tastes and experiment. Baking should be fun!
For the cake itself, I used a Duncan Heinz mix. Cake from scratch is good too, but the mix is easy and quick. Just remember, if you want to be able to color the batter, use a white cake and use egg whites only to get the batter as white as possible. It'll dye better.
And the cutie marks are fondant. There's no much advise I can give except to practice and experiment. Use corn starch to make it less sticky. A technique I used a lot here was to make the shapes by arranging balls of fondant together and smushing them flat with a flat surface (like a dough scraper or a meat cleave.) Use gel food dye to get the colors. I use Wilton and Americolor brand gels. Most craft stores carry colors in the cake section. You can find fondant and icing there as well.

I'm trying to make cupcakes like these but am having trouble with the coloring. May I ask how you do the marble? (I'd especially like to learn how you did Celestia and Rainbow's.)

I use gel coloring, like Wilton or Americolor. Regular food coloring that you might get at the grocery store just won't give you bright colors. I also made sure my batter was as white as possible (using just egg whites) so I could make sure there was no yellow mucking up colors like blue and purple. Just color the batter in a separate, small dish, and then add it on top of the last color. For a swirl (what I tried to do on Rarity's but the colors weren't contrasting enough) I just add a little more of a different color on top and then use a toothpick to swirl it in.

That's what I'd like to do. But for this time I was lazy and just added spice or extract to the batter. Applejack was cinnamon. I forget what the others were.

Aww that's terrible news. Isn't there anyway around it? I mean... I saw in one of the comments that you mentioned possibly passing it off as selling art? That wouldn't work :\? Cause honestly I'm sure a lot of artists and people visiting would appreciate the cupcakes in both flavor and appearance xD

All fondant and coloring. I just made rounded shapes, put the close to each other then squished them with a very flat surface.
