Do you think its possible if this could be done on the Gimp program for people who don't have photoshop?

And does it nesserily have to be sketched? could it be outlined with the pen tool?

i too don't have a tablet

destianna In reply to BoogieJ [2009-10-06 17:21:39 +0000 UTC]

I don't know much about Gimp, but I'm sure it can be. There may be tutorials here on dA that have a digital painting tutorial for Gimp. And of course- you can outline it however is easier for you.

ah.. you just put the lightest color and then the darker ones
I put each color ._. but it takes way longer to adjust the color to the right place..

It takes practice!! You won't get it completely on the first try, but stick with it! Soon you'll develop your own style of doing it and you'll do what works for you! Good luck!

What do the dodge and burn tools do?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

destianna In reply to Megan-Loves [2008-06-19 18:22:48 +0000 UTC]

The dodge tool is used for brightening or highlighting certain parts. You can choose between three different modes: Shadow, Midtone, or Highlight. Both the shadow and midtone give it more of a white highlight, whereas the actual highlight mode more so just brightens the area and gives it shine. The burn tool is the same way, but instead it darkens the area or adds shadows. It has the same three modes; the shadow and midtone give a gray shadow, while the highlight darkens it more naturally. Hope that helps!

Thanks. Now I have to make sure I remember that forever...

destianna In reply to Megan-Loves [2008-06-20 22:13:13 +0000 UTC]

You can always use it as a reference And it's pretty easy to find out with experimentation as well. I'm not quite sure remembering the symbols would help, but I find it easier to just remember the 'burn' tool, since it sounds more like what it actually does. When you burn things it gets charred and dark, right? That's how I remember n_n

This is a great tutorial. There were some very helpful tips, perfect for someone like me just starting out, thanks! Now I gotta go get a tablet <,<

destianna In reply to RandomByChoice [2007-05-30 20:55:26 +0000 UTC]

I do this all with a mouse! No tablet at all ^_^ So it's very possible with a mouse and a lot of patience!

RandomByChoice In reply to destianna [2007-05-31 00:49:55 +0000 UTC]

Oh i know just how possible it is. I'm waiting til I get a tablet to post anything on here though. Hopefully that'll be sometime within the next week or two. Maybe you should get one too and do some serious work, I can't imagine the stuff we'd see from you then.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

destianna In reply to RandomByChoice [2007-05-31 06:07:45 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I am planning on getting one. I've been thinking more serious about it lately because I want to get into REAL digital painting...like, with the actual "brushstroke" look n_n that's the kind of art I really love.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RandomByChoice In reply to destianna [2007-05-31 17:03:41 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I'll definitely keep tabs on your stuff, be sure to tell me when you get a tablet. I know what you mean, I've seen some astonishing work done in photoshop.

I love your art, and your digital potraits are awsome! Im trying it out right now, but how did you arrange the layers?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

destianna In reply to jpopqueen26 [2007-05-12 19:52:25 +0000 UTC]

Since I do the skin first (basically the bottom layer) I just piled the other layers on top of that. You can do it however you want though, but it's easier for me to do it that way since I like to work from the bottom on up.

It's a lot of smudging, a lot of music, and a LOT of patience without a tablet n_n I'm hoping to get one soon to see the difference between mouse painting and tablet painting!

nice work, your is much simplier (sp?) then the ones I used to learn off of... now I just sort of go with the flow of things and found my own way of doing it. my bad habit is not adding enough shadow where they are needed. I guess I'm still to chicken, nice tip with the soften tool though never though of using that to help blend things in might try it on this new one and see if it helps. Great tutorial!

Wow, i really like this tutorial, and it gives me a step by step. But I have such problems with digital paintings >< I'll try though with the help of your tutorial, but can I ask? Whats the Smooth Tool?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

destianna In reply to ying-temptra [2006-01-26 23:31:35 +0000 UTC]

Otherwise known as the "soften" tool. ^_^ On my PS it looks like a little waterdrop, but I dunno what it looks like on other versions >_> I hope that helps ..!

ying-temptra In reply to destianna [2006-01-28 19:45:44 +0000 UTC]

Ah I see what you mean, is the 'Blur Tool' perhaps? Thats looks like a waterdrop. Yeah I found it. But how will you use it for digital painting?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

destianna In reply to ying-temptra [2006-01-28 21:22:42 +0000 UTC]

I use it to just soften the painting, for instance like on the skin where it's been blended into another colour, soften around there and it'll blend easier ^_^

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ying-temptra In reply to destianna [2006-02-01 20:30:47 +0000 UTC]

Ah I see what you mean. I'll give it a go although Im not so confident with digital painting. Thanks so much for your tutorial and comments, Really helped me a lot.
