Description
Ever want to feel sorry for someone. Anybody at all that you just want to reach out to them? Want to cuddle them or anything like that? Well...here are a few characters I feel sorry for in the long run. THere are A LOT Of them, I will admit, I want to give them a hug as soon as I can. I also can cry for them cause they deserve one. Whether they get their happily ever after or not, it makes me feel sorry for them even more.
Because He/She's the Best-Michelle(Once Upon a Forest)
Michelle is one of my favorite characters from this very underrated cult classic. She's just too precious for this sinful word. And she has to be the cutest of them(all the Furlings are cute in their own way). So, for those who HAVE NOT seen the movie, please do. Rent it at Amazon Prime or something. But for who have, should remember her. So, Michelle is a friend of the main characters Abigail, Russell and Edggar and the niece of their teacher Cornelius. One day while they're out on a ramble, a gas truck hits a broken bottle in the road(by some idiotic drunk driver) and gets a flat tire causing gas to go through the woods. And Michelle and her parents are among the animals effected by it...but only Michelle was able to survive cause Abigail was lucky to rescue her before she could expire. The entire movie has her friends go to find the herbs needed to make a special medicine. While she is lucky to survive, she is still given the bad news that her parents are dead and Cornelius volunteers to raise her. The tears coming from her are just too real. But, as Cornelius says, "if we all work as hard to save Dapplewood as your friends did to save you, it will be."
Because He/She Suffers from Loss-Dani Arbor(Midsommar)
*For those who haven't seen this movie and don't want to, prepare for spoilers*
Okay, this movie is a bit fucked up, but then again, it's a horror movie, it's supposed to scare the fuck out of you. It's hard when someone like Dani Arbor is dealing with a boyfriend who is abusive and distant from her and wants to break up with her...then the worse comes to worse, she suffers from the loss of both her parents and her sister in a murder-suicide! It gets worse where we see that Christian, her boyfriend tries his best to support her, but doesn't want anything to do with her anymore. The only person who seems to feel sorry for her is his friend Pelé. They go to Sweden and enter into a hidden village called the Harga who take her in with open arms. The trauma from her family's death doesn't go away for Dani and it haunts her. It gets even worse when she witnesses a Harga ritual and is sto visually traumatized by it that she nearly leaves. THEN...she finds out her boyfriend is cheating on her with a village girl named Maja(unaware it was part of a love spell ritual) It's no wonder she was easy to fall into prey with the people's ways and even stay with them despite the fact that they straight up killed her friends(and other people before then). Then again...her boyfriend was a dick and so were most of his friends. And Pelé clearly had feelings for her. Words can't describe how much I feel bad for her.
Because He/She's Abused-Jenna Hunterton(Waitress)
Love this movie/musical. It takes on a realistic approach on people who try to get out of a unwanted relationship/marriage, but have the low confidence to do so because they feel insignificant about it. That's what happened to poor Jenna. Our heroine Jenna is a waitress who LOVES to bake pies at a local diner where she works. However, it's her safezone because Jenna is married to an emotionally and physically abusive asshole named Earl. And to horror, she is carrying his child from a drunken one-night stand. And then she has to promise Earl to neglect the baby for her hubby. Luckily, if it weren't for the support of her friends and her "boyfriend" Dr. Pomatter, Jenna wouldn't have found the courage to keep, give birth to and love the baby. It also manages to give her the courage she needed to stand up to her asshole of a husband and divorce his sorry ass. While she does break up with Dr. Pomatter(as he's already married when she carried the affair with him), she was able to escape her abusive husband, start anew with the help of her friends and inherited the diner she worked at now named "Lulu's".
Because He/She's Disabled-August "Auggie" Pullman(Wonder)
Okay, I need to read the book, but this movie, pun intended, was a wonder. I reccomend this movie to you. Jacob Tremblay did a great job playing this character. So, August "Auggie" Pullman is a young extraordinatry boy who is very creative and a happy go lucky kid. He loves all things boys are into, is a big fan of Star Wars and a sweet little boy. However, he suffers from a rare medical facial deformity known as "mandibulofacial dysostosis" that leaves his face disfigured. And he gets bullied by his peers at his new school because of it. Come on, kids, just because someone looks different, you shouldn't bully them. Even his new friend Jack secretly makes fun of him behind his back. Luckily, he has his family's love and support. Even his older sister Via is caring towards him on her best days and his new friend Summer cares for him. Then, it gets worst when Julian, one of the kids in the film bullies Auggie and his on-off friend Jack. But...without spoiling the movie/book, he does get a happy ending.
Because He/She Suffers From Guilt-Elsa(Frozen)
I don't care what anybody says about Frozen. I still think it's one of Disney's best recent movies and the sequel is better to be honest. And Elsa, to me, is one of the most complex written Disney heroines. Elsa is one of the main protagonists of both the franchises and let me tell you, how much she goes through. While playing with Anna, she accidentally hits Anna in the head with her ice powers, causing her immense guilt throughout her life. She even learns to "conceal, don't feel". And she's done this until Anna accidentally pulls her glove off during an argument...causing her to freeze the room. ON HER CORONATION DAY! Then she runs away to the mountains and forms her own ice palace where she isolates herself. Then when her sister comes to tell her to come home as she has set an eternal winter on Arendelle, she freaks out to the point where she accidentally freezes Anna's heart. Her powers get worse and then she gets captured, does escape and nearly gets executed by Anna's ex-boyfriend Hans who tells her Anna's dead and at her breaking point...and that's before Anna saves her. Even after Elsa is accepted back to Arendelle, she still suffers the guilt that came with everything through mention of her not being able to spend time with Anna and nearly ruining her birthday with her cold. Without spoilers for the second movie, I can say that I really liked how she managed to get another happy ending by then.
Because of Subtext-Bunny(Courage the Cowardly Dog)
The Mask Parts 1-2 had to be one of the most...realistic episodes of Courage I have ever seen. As a kid, I didn't understand the concept, but as I grew up, I can't help but realize what the hell is going on. And not only that, but it has become a masterpiece of an episode in my eyes(with The Hunchback of Nowhere coming in as one of my other favorite episodes). I should've put this character Bunny on the Abused list, but...because of the subtext of the episode, she fits here. And...I can't help but feel bad for this bunny. So, Bunny and Kitty are best friends(they couldn't make them a lesbian couple back in the early 2000s, but with today's society, it'd work), but Bunny fell in love with a tough guy named Mad Dog. Unfortunately turned out to be a big mistake as he started talking her down, dolling her up to make her feel good for everyone else, and even putting her in a flowerpot should she try to escape or break up with him. If you're an adult and have known somebody who's been in a situation similar, would probably know what I'm talking about and probably get the whole metaphors. And...it's real! That's the scary thing about Bunny's situation. Unlike most of the situations Courage faced before, there are no monsters to scare you because the real monsters are those who hurt, put you down and use you for your own gain. If it weren't for Courage, Bunny would've been stuck with Mad Dog forever.
Because He/She Can't Catch a Break-Chris(Everybody Hates Chris)
To me, while this show is one of the funniest sitcoms I've watched(as I like Chris Rock's narration, the cutaway gags and the acting in general), but Chris himself just...can't get a break. No matter what happens to him, he always have to start back in square one due to a mistake he made or somebody pinning the blame on him. With a father who's good-hearted yet cheap, a mom who's sassy, a Gary Sue of a brother and a brat of a little sister, home life is NOTHING bad compared to life at school or social life. Everytime Chris does something good for it, it blows up in his face(with a few exceptions that is), but still, his luck makes Donald Duck have a off-day. And at school, he's been the subject of racism by the local bully and his hypoctical dumbass of a teacher. The only friend he has, Greg though stuck by him. And in his love life, either they see him as a scapegoat(like Yvette), a loser(like Keisha) or just a friend(like Tasha). Poor Chris didn't get his break until the final episode where he manages to get a GED and pass getting an acting career.
Well, the show is loosly based on Chris Rock's true life and I don't know if he was exaggerating his childhood, but it's still a great show.
Because He/She's Misunderstood-Edward Scissorhands(Edward Scissorhands)
Okay, I will make a list of my favorite Beauty and the Beast adaptations or movies with similiar premises, Edward Scissorhands willl be up there not only because Tim Burton did a great with the film in itself, but it's main character, while beastly looking is just a misunderstood being. He didn't ask to be made or have scissors for hands! So, Edward lived alone in the castle above a suburbian town ever since his inventor father dies before giving him his hands as a Christmas present. And poor dude didn't have anybody to contact with. When saleswoman Peg Boggs comes up and takes pity on Edward, she takes him home where the neighbors adore Edward...but only for their own gain and some even think of him as the devil. When he falls in love with Peg's daughter Kim and after getting to know him, visa versa, you can defintely see a parallel to Beauty and the Beast there. The saddest thing is that because of him having scissors for hands, he gets taken advantage of by Kim's jealous (Ex) boyfriend Jim and nearly seduced by Peg's neighbor Joyce before they decide to do a angry mob and lynch him. It's sad. All Edward was doing was just trying to fit into society, but the Boggs family are the only ones who treat him as such. Poor Edward. At least Kim does declare her love for him to make him feel better.
Because He/She is Innocent-Tom Robinson(To Kill a Mockingbird)
One of my favorite books to read over and over again is To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. I also love the movie with Gregory Peck and watch it from time to time. One of the themes of both the book and the movie is the idea that "mockingbirds" are meant as a symbol of purity and innocence and that killing one is like taking away the innocent people of the world...and it's sad. Hence the title "To Kill a Mockingbird." The main conflict of the book/movie happens when Atticus Finch(Scout's father and the most respected lawyer in Maycomb, Alabama) is chosen to defend Tom Robinson, an African American man who is accused of assault/rape of one Mayella Ewell. However...the thing is this: Tom is innocent as he has a defective left hand from an accident and Mayella accused him of hitting her with his left hand. And Atticus was suspicious tht both Mayella and her pop Bob have been lying about Tom's accusations because of that piece of evidence and the fact that Tom was confessing that Mayella tried to seduce him, but while he refused, he never dared harm her. However, in the South during the 1930s, they held disregard for African American people and didn't know better than to judge somebody based on appearence alone. Henceforce, despite Atticus' attempts at defending him and Tom trying to prove his innocence, they still found him guilty. And then poor Tom gets shot for trying to escape. Poor dude didn't deserve it.
Because He/She is Desperate-Fantine(Les Miserables)
Fantine is honestly one of the most tragic characters in Les Miserables. I mean, moreso to me in the musical as in the book(which I hope to read) cause in post-revolutionary France, life sucks for this girl. I mean, there's nothing wrong with this woman. She's beautiful, kind and a devoting mom; she's a woman who is desperate to get money to provide for herself and her young daughter Cosette. It's not her fault that Cosette is an illegitamate child. Her ex-boyfriend slept with her and ran off on both of them and girls in that time period were not allowed to have a job unless they were married. So, Fantine had to lie about her background in order to get a job at the factory. Then she sends Cosette to live with the lying, scheming Thenardiars who scrape her for what it's worth by lying to her about Cosette's wellbeing. THEN....she gets her ass fired when one of her bitchy co-workers reveals to the foreman(who was already sexually harassing her) that she's a single mother and a 'slut.' Then, because she couldn't get another job, she had no choice, but to sel her hair, locket and teeth before becoming a prostitute. And this is before Valjean saves her from arrest to atone for not helping her out earlier. Then she has caught turburculosis and suffering from it badly that she dies at the hospital...not without blessing Valjean for promising to find Cosette and raise her in her place. To watch her baby grow up in Valjean's care, is relieving for her, even if she's not there and as a reward, she enters heaven and then guides Valjean when he dies there.
Because He/She Tries(But Often Fails)-Samurai Jack(Samurai Jack)
For Genndy Tartakovsky, he wanted to do a different type of show after he was doing Dexter's Labratory which was good in its own right(and I liked it). And he did such a great job doing a story arc series such as Samurai Jack. I mean, yes, the episodes wre episodic, BUT...the trick of it was he had a story arc all this time: Aku sent Jack to the future where his evil is law, Jack has to get home to the past. Not an easy task. Every time Jack tries to do so, Aku is one step ahead. Even after Jack decides to help other people before his own needs, Jack fails to get home in time. Then again, a hero must have struggles in order to be a great hero. Not only that, but there are those who he tried to help, but failed to do so. And this keeps going on for a LONG time and it bothers the hell out of him cause all he wants to do is go home, defeat Aku and save everyone he met from suffering this fate. And Aku is always one step ahead of him. It hurts him so much that for 50 future years, he tries in vain that he goes into depression and even gives up on his quest at some point. And about to commit sepuku. Then Ashi, his enemy-turned-lover was able to bring him back to his feet since he was the only one who was able to show her the true world Aku had set into her view point. Then, just as he was about to face Aku again, he breaks him down...then his friends that he helped throughout the series comes to his aid long enough for Jack to fight Aku and save Ashi just in time before Ashi sacrifices her life to bring Jack home to the past and kill Aku.
Because I've Been In His/Her Place-Lilo Pelekai(Lilo and Stitch)
I was a big Lilo and Stitch nut as a child. I was able to connect with Lilo because I was just like Lilo when I was a little girl. I didn't have too many friends. I was like the "loner" girl. It was hard to make new friends or I felt like I was the odd one out. So, I can relate to Lilo. Lilo, though, I felt had it WORSE. Her parents were killed in a car accident in a storm, none of the other kids want to be her friend for being different and she only had her older sister Nani as a guardian. And...even if he wasn't a bad guy, Cobra Bubbles was to take Lilo away from her sister and place her in a foster home. That's rough for a little six year old girl. However, the bit where Lilo was ostracized by her ex-friends for being different...that was me when I was younger. I wanted to join in with some of the other kids, but they were very mean and I felt alone. It also didn't help that whenevr we did group projects, nobody wanted to listen to me when I said we'd have to get our work done so we can have fun later. It bothers the hell out of me. Luckily I had a couple of friends to be there for me just like even if he was different and was a bit destructive(before his change) Stitch was there for Lilo.
Because His/Her Dreams Were Crushed-Mr. Susan Link(Missing Link)
Laika needs to have better entertainment distribution, because their movies are amazing! Please! Give these guys some credit as they have some WONDERFUL stop motion animation and their stories(while some are cliched) are still charming and engaging. And Laika's recent movie Missing Link is...amazing. Actually one of my favorite movies of 2019. In this movie, the sasquach who calls himself Susan, or Mr. Link as our protagonist Lionel Frost calls him just wants to fit in a nice family and get accepted by those around him. And he thinks his cousins The Yetis of Shangri-La could accept him as they're basically relatives so he asks Lionel and his good friend Adelina Fortnight to take him there. But when he gets there, they don't want "his kind" in their circle. Bastards! And they lock Susan/Link and his friends in a pit. And poor Susan/Link feels crushed because all he wanted is a family and yet the Yetis don't want him in their family. It's a more heartbreaking take on Lionel's character arc where he wanted to be accepted by the royal club by Lord Piggot Dunceby, but they don't want him around because he's different. Both get their dreams crushed...but Link's had it worst cause all he was is lonely and not seeking for any personal gain. I want to give him a hug there.
Because of His/Her Cruel Fate-Peter Grahm(Hereditary)
*For those who haven't seen this movie and don't want to, prepare for spoilers*
Remember that thing of nepotism? Where after you retire, your son/daughter takes over your job for you? Well...not exactly if you have a evil demon in the mix. Annie, our main heroine's mom runs a secret cult that worships a demon and that demon needs a male host to grant them riches and such. However, the sympathy is mostly put into the oldest Grahm child Peter. Why? Because the demon needs a male body to posess and he's been stuck in the daughter Charlie's for years. Anyways, Peter is like any teenager, a bit angsty, a bit of a jerk, wants to be a ladies man, put into peer pressure by his "so-called friends", does drugs, etc. Then, things go bad for him when his mom forces him to take his little sister Charlie to a high school party. She eats cake covered in nuts(which she's highly allergic to), then he tries to drive her to a hospital in which he swerves from a dead animal causing her to get decapitated by a telephone pole! THEN....an unseen entity keeps following him and the family and at one point possesses him enough to break his nose during school. And it doesn't stop there! Then said entity kills his father when mother burns her daughter's sketchbook...then possesses her into chasing poor Peter into the attic. Then in a cruel fate, a trembling and crying Peter sees a bunch of naked people in the attic with a evil pentogram, and his mom decaptitating herself with a piano wire....and then he jumps out the window to his death...only for the evil spirit to possess his body and use it like a puppet. And it all goes back to the grandmother who made a pact with this entity long long long ago! Damn! He didn't deserve such a fate.
Because Nobody Helped Him/Her-The Little Matchgirl(Disney's The Little Matchgirl)
When Disney was in production for Fantasia 2006, they had their third Hans Christian Anderson idea pre-Frozen in mind: The Little Matchgirl. It was going to be a segment with the music of String Quartet No.2 in D Minor by Alexander Borodin. I can tell you it's one of the BEST shorts I've seen. And I felt so much pity for this little girl who could've been Mulan's great-great-great-great-great-great-granddaughter! So, inspired by the original story, the poor nameless little Matchgirl is poor and trying to make a living selling matches. However, nobody wants to buy matches from a street urchin. And even worse, for those who have read the original story, lives in an abusive household. Well, this poor girl has the worst luck...and even worse than that: it's freezing cold out and she has nothing to keep her warm! So on Christmas Eve, after her failed business, she goes to an alleyway and uses her matches to try and keep her warm. Unfortuntely, it doesn't work...and she dies from hyperthermia and nobody stopped to prevent it. However, her spirit goes to heaven where she reunites with her grandmother, who is the only family member who she loved. While the short got a Oscar nomination, it is very underrated. I would've also given the Little Matchgirl a place to stay and food. She didn't deserve this as everyone deserves some help even if they don't ask for it. Luckily, the short in itself got itself a new life twice: one on the Platinum Edition of The Little Mermaid and the Disney Animated Shorts Collection DVD.
Because Nobody Forgave Him/Her-Grizabella(CATS)
Please, for those who like Cats...WATCH THE MUSICAL! It's one of my favorite musicals(especially better than the 2019 movie). One of my favorite characters is Grizabella. In the musical, poor Grizabella is scorned and shunned by the rest of the Jellicles for some unknown reason and she's broken down, depressed and trying with all her heart to get back into the tribe. Everytime she comes, they shoo her away and it seems like there was some grudge between them that Grizz is trying to find her way back into the tribe. I believe(and it was confirmed in the film) that at some point, Grizz left the tribe and worked for Macavity at some point and went down a spiral as if someone went through drugs or other bad stuff in their life. Then, she regretted it, left Macavity and is desperate to redeem herself to the Jellicles. And it's not fair when another one of Macavity's ex-workers got entered into the tribe anyways! Poor Grizz. At least Old Deutoronomy gave her some sympathy to let her perform her song "Memory" and allow the other Jellicles to forgive her and let her take the Jellicle Choice so she can be born into a new life.
Because He/She Has Nobody to Love-The Pitbull and Kitten(Kitbull)
Never have I wanted to cry at a short such as this. Maybe even more than The Little Matchgirl. And to really hit it home, the breeds chosen for this short are the most controversal: a black cat and a pitbull. In this short, this poor little kitten(who I sometimes call Timmy) and this pitbull(who I sometimes call Vick) come from different backgrounds with the kitten abandoned by her owners and the pitbull used for illegal pitbull fighting. And nobody was willing to give them a chance....until the ending. But it hurts. The only thing that kept them going was their geniune, unique and strong friendship. Tied together by a plastic bottle cap. To see that these two animals were willing to overcome their differences and become friends is so sweet, but it's also sad considering that until they found a new home, they had nobody to love them. Not even the pitbull's owners give a crap about him unless he is strong enough to go into a dog-fighting ring. As a strong contender for animals, I really wanted to hug these two badly. They need some love. But I'm glad they found it in their new owner.
You can find the short on Disney Plus, or on Youtube(www.youtube.com/watch?v=AZS5cg… )
Because Of His/Her Performace-Joy "Ma" Newsome(Room)
I want to say that before she did her blandest performance(in everyone's eyes) as Captain Marvel in the MCU, she played an amazing performance in the drama Room. As Joy Newsome aka Ma, Brie Larson does it all to give her best performance. Her character, stolen away as a teenager by a kidnapper/rapist and confined to a small square space to call a prison. There, she gives birth to her precious son Jack. Five years they spent in that room with Ma trying her best to protect her son from her abuser/kidnapper/rapist(aka his father). And she also plans out their escape which he does by the time Jack turned five years old. And then when she brings her son into the real world from "Room", she tries in vain to get him into a normal life, while she herself is trying to readjust to her normal life. What sells it is Brie Larson actually making herself as if she was actually a survivor of kidnapping and abuse(via rape) and had to sell the part which...makes me want to wish for her to escape.
Because Of Those Who Hate Him/Her-Gurgi(The Black Cauldron)
When someone like Gurgi is given the Scrappy treatment, it's mostly due to him being annoying(voice wise). Me, I actually like him. It's just people hate him that I feel like sometimes they forget that all he wants is a friend as he's lonely and when he tries to find food, it's to survive. And, yes he can be a coward, but he does the most bravest, yet saddest thing in the entire movie. So, when Taran at first dismisses him for being a thief and a coward, I wanted to hug little Gurgi(I like Taran too, but that was a bit mean). Then, again, he did help out from time to time. His biggest sacrifice was based on his loyal heart. It took that to make Taran realize he wass beig a loyal friend all this time. It was very noble of Taran to trade the Cauldron for Gurgi's life instead of taking back the sword.
Because of the Setting's Impact-Kim(Miss Saigon)
Miss Saigon is to me, a very underrated show, but one of the reasons I like it is because it's kind of almost like a spiritual successor to Les Miserables. I guess it has something to do with the fact they're done by the same composers, take place during a war and also feature sly huckster characters who steal the spotlight. Oh, and single moms trying to make the best for them and their children. Kim is that character who would be comparing to Les Miserables' Fantine. Okay, so durning the mist of the Vietnam War, Kim, who is one year before she becomes a legal adult escapes from an arranged marriage with her cousin Thuy and from her old rice field as her parents died because of the war's impact. Then, she goes into prostitution run by the slimy(and hilarious) Engineer to make ends meet. On the night before the soldiers have to leave Vietnam, she meets, sleeps with and falls in love with Chris. After a "accidental marriage", Chris promises to take Kim back home to America...but can't because before he can go back to get Kim, he is knocked out and forced onto the helicopter, leaving Kim behind. Then, when Saigon becomes Ho Chi Min City, Kim is make a choice: marry Thuy who became an officer, against her will or else...but she has a child from her night with Chris. Then, to protect her son, she is forced to kill Thuy, thus becoming a fugitive. And it's all because the setting's impact on her hits her hard! Then it gets worse for her as she can't get into America because of the risky regulations and the fact that Chris has married someone else while he was home. It's just sad.
Because of His/Her Society's Impact-Oliver(Oliver!)
No matter if you read the book or watch this musical, there's no doubt that society doesn't give a crap about poor little Oliver. Before I read the book and saw the musical, I only knew of Oliver from Oliver and Company. Anyways, as for how Oliver's story, he was raised in a orphanage/workhouse where they served nothing, but gruel. He starts off the musical/book by getting punished just for asking for more. Then, when he runs away, he gets caught nearly by the rich and sent back to the orphanage. It's tough in the streets alone. Especially for a orphan. Then he gets taken in by Fagin and his gang of pickpockets including the Artful Dodger. Then he gets arrested, but gets taken in by kindly Mr. Brownlow, who is to me, the only rich guy in the book who was sympathetic to his plight and later adopts him. Then he gets involved with Sykes' plans befor the big happy ending just because while he is a lowlife, he might bust him for his job. Glad this kid got a break.
Because He/She Can't Handle It All-Steven Universe(Steven Universe)
After binging this show, I can say that Steven Universe is one of the best heroes of the cartoons of the 2010s. And it's not hard to see why? While he starts off as an innocent little boy, he grows into a mature selfless teenager who is able to sacrifice his own to protect his family and home. And he cares his family so much that he was even willing to protect his home for them. However, as brave and selfless as this kid is, this kid goes through such struggles and he couldn't handle it all as he continues to grow up. And this all happened as soon as the last Cookie Cat was discontinued with the giant bug monster. And it doesn't stop there. For most of his life, Steven fights and preserves or reforms Corrupted Gems with the help of his guardians the Crystal Gems, all the while trying to keep a brave face and optimistic attitude. But as he grows up and wants to enjoy his happily ever after, turns out...not the case. After his experiences, he He develops a case of PTSD which gradually builds up over the course of the sequel series. And because he bottles his emotions too much, it turns him into a monster. Literally If it weren't for his father, surrogate moms and friends, he would've turned into a monster. Still, that's a lot to go through for one kid. But at least the finale ended on a good note with Steven getting the love, support and help he needs with him going off to find his own destiny.
Because His/Her Struggles Feel Real-Charlie(Bumblebee)
I'm not really a fan of Michael Bay's Transformers films cause I find them to be overrated even if I like Shia LaBouff. However, while his protagonist is dull as dirt, the protagonist in the spinoff/prequel Bumblebee Charlie is one I can love. Why? It's understandable in her own right. She also goes through a great deal of development throughout the movie. All this has happened because her father passed away sometime before the main movie and she tries to isolate herself because of it. She enjoys working on the family car and spends her time in the garage. And her mom had started dating another man too soon which is hard for her as it is. It isn't until she meets the titular Bumblebee that Charlie begins to open up about her struggles...which I think feel real. I mean, it's hard when a teenager goes through a death of someone close and a upcoming remarriage. It's hard to let go of the past. I get it, so that's why I sympathize with Charlie's case.
Because I CAN-Utena and Anthy(Revolutionary Girl Utena)
I can't help but feel sorry for the both of them as the series went on. I wanted to do for Anthy, but then I couldn't help, but feel bad for Utena as well. So I chose both.
The first I want to talk about is Utena. She lost her parents at age 7, then was considering joining them when she was "found" by a prince who gave her a ring and a promise to meet again. Then she spends the remaining years training to be a prince promising to fight for him. Then she has to fight the duelists to save Anthy again and again. Then when she meet Anthy older brother, Akio, she develops conflicting feelings for him which he uses to an advantage and rapes her(we don't see it, but he basically did cause there were some signs). AND THEN...he gloats to her face during her last duel that HE is the prince who saved her years ago and she was fighting for nothing...then she gives it all to fight to save Anthy from her horrendous cycle once and for all...holy shit! Do I give this girl my pity...and my respect because she's a badass heroine with struggles to face on her own.
And on Anthy's case, turns out the prince who saved Utena is her older brother and she gave her soul to protect him for eternity...even if it adds taking away her own free will, leaving her an emotionless soul. Then, said older brother does ALL four abuse methods on her: physically, mentally, emotionally AND SEXUALLY abuses her into subservience and then pimps her to the duelist who wins her as a literal trophy. And what do they mostly do? The same damn thing(well...Juri and Miki...their methods are unclear as Miki is the nicer one of the duelists and Juri has her own issues to deal with). Then Utena wins and she forms a bond with her...and she still feels like she needs to be subservient to those around her until Utena promises to fight for her...thus urging her to become her own person.
God DAMN IT! I want to give these two a hug.
