And you know what ? I don't think an author avatar is a bad thing, ESPECIALLY when they are this flawed and entertaining. I am really glad that Ian, while right about the park, does NOT have his priorities set straight. I am really glad that he is nowhere near as smooth as he thinks he is (his first remark towards Ellie and her legs ? Gold ! And he was not the least bit malicious about it ! He meant it AS A COMPLIMENT XD I mean he just continues his discussion with Dr Sattler about his clothing style as is.). And I am VERY VERY GLAD that he freaked the fuck out when Rexy escaped ! Look, unlike the movie where the car was still there and Alan had the idea to send Roberta away with a flare so that Ian gets her even further away with not-so brilliant results, Book Rexy already threw the kids vehicle away with her jaw ! Alan and Ian were both powerless and freaking the fuck out. Once Alan admitted he had not a single idea what to do, Ian used the Daffy Duck method of combat: The tactical retreat ! It will cause Rexy to toy with him and throw him like a ragdoll causing a broken leg and a nasty infection... and his death.
For a suppsedly smart guy, he kinda lacks common sense. He knew full well in advance that the park was bound to fail, but still accepted Hammond's paycheck and the free trip just to sit back and give the old bastard a smug "I WAS RIGHT ALL ALONG ! CHAOS FTW BIATCH HAHA !". I like to brag when I am right too but I don't think the risk of being disemboweled or crushed by archosaurs is really worth it ... So, NO, I never got the Mary Sue accusation. Hell at this point, that term is losing its meaning. And in Jurassic Park, the other characters are either weirded out or rolling their eyes at Ian's diatribes so it does not even apply.

Now, compared to Movie Malcolm, well, if it's ONLY the 1st flick and book, it's a tie to me since I love both. BUT if you include the sequel, Spielberg's Malcolm wins this hands down and IS my favorite JP character overall. Why ? Well, he has a character arc, Jeff Goldblum's performance takes the change into account AND there's more believability/badassery and heart to Malcolm's attitude and even risking his whole reputation to couter Ingen's shady dealings. Ian is opinionated BUT very principled dude. In the 2nd novel ? Well there's an extinction theory to be tested so let's go there ! Due to accepting Levine's suggestion, Book Malcolm feels too static and Crichton sticks a bit too much to the broken leg song and dance. While I do like his interaction with Sarah and annoyance at Levine, I still feel it still was not worth the "miraculous" resurrection.

So yeah I do find Book Malcolm (at least the original novel) funnier, more laid back and more interesting than people give him credit for. Plus it's impossible to not read his ramblings with that Jeff Goldblum or Richard Darbois voice of his (YES, in French, we always read Ian with Darbois' voice ! It's a RULE, It's SCIENCE !).
