Description This is a mix of en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wendigo + a good dose of wood spirit taking revenge on hunters.

I went crazy with details once again and added a snake, two birds, a fox and a wolf... despite the fact that this commission (for online game Algadon www.algadon.com) was for a 250 px tall image.. well at least I know it's there!

Hmm. Since most of the Native Americans who had versions of the wendigo/windego legend were hunting cultures, "harming the creatures of the woods" seems like an unlikely thing for hunters to object to. However, it's true there's always been a difference between hunting to eat and slaughtering unnecessarily for one's own amusement or madness.

In any case, GORGEOUS art!

Hmm, you are right.. I looked it up on Wikipedia en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wendigo and I see that it's not even spelled "Windego"... I got my info from the commissioner and didn't check it before I wrote the description. Thanks for the heads-up! I'll change the description accordingly.
And thanks for the praise!

I've seen both "windego" and "wendigo," as well as a few others; between tribal variants and different Euro-American spellings of native words, there's quite a range.

The primary version I've heard is that a wendigo/windego is the monster a man turns into if he eats human flesh (whether for evil reasons or to keep from starving in wintertime), but again, legends of any kind vary from place to place.

We--we humans--always change things over time, whether it's stories or words or customs; we wear out the old things and change or replace 'em, and the longer we're apart from each other, the more the changes branch out.

I'm more of a writer than an artist, so I like following the trails of words--especially in things like old folksongs, where people learned them by ear rather than on a written page, so you can see the lyrics both erode and adapt over time, like a streambed cut by the shifting water.

Very cool, and I like your take on the Wendigo. Most pictures I've seen (and there haven't been many) have shown it as more humanoid, since that IS where the legend begins. But yours is more frightening and creative, I think.

Fantastic! I think the addition of the animals make the windego look more like a force of nature.

Wow!

This is well done, particularly in general composition and in the body language of the creature, the two humans, and the fleeing fox!

There was one in the book Pet Semetary. But isn't it's name Wendigo?

I got commissioned for a "windego", but you're right, it can have many different names according to Wikipedia [link] Can't remember the Wendigo from PS though, it was ages since I read it.
