Why they weren't retrieved in time: The duchess was simply busy and didn’t manage to come in time. Her previous case was a cult ritual of a mess and she feels quite guilty and hurt in her pride, seeing as she is quite a capable death god on a usual base. Out of responsibility and due to Cordelia’s young age, helpless appearance and ‘grumpy disposition’ (just the Duchess’ type, apparently…), she decided to help her out a little, offering a place to stay and hobby to pursue in her pastime of being a keeper. Cordelia accepted the offer and tolerates her motherly doting in turn of accommodation.
Currently: While Cordelia is reliable concerning her keeping duties and the orders she gets, she still doesn’t quite enjoy it much. In her pastime, she is looking after the “Gallows’ Arms”, a pub the Duchess owns, enjoying the responsibility and feeling of autonomy that comes with it. While still dependent on living in one of its upper rooms she is saving up to purchase her own humble abode soon.
Bio:
Tl;dr: Sister and brother from rich family are close; brother is a romantic lunatic, has massive debts and commits suicide; parents force girl to stabilize their financial situation by marrying; girl does so but woos the one candidate she wants herself; turns out brother only faked his death to escape obligations and comes to take her with him on her wedding night; girl refuses to go and blames brother for being selfish; brother freaks and hits her with a candle holder -> girl dead
Cordelia was born to the aristocratic Doherty family as the youngest child of three. Her parents were too preoccupied caring for their older, more promising two children - Charlotte and Laertes - to waste much attention on the shy and sickly girl. The rural location of Doherty Manor, the main abode of the family, didn’t do much for the child’s social development and Cordelia grew to be a timid and withdrawn girl, spending lots of time on solitary hobbies such as reading and stitching. The only person in the household willingly and actively spending time with her was her older brother Laertes, who adored his younger sister to bits. He was a romantic and idealist, skilled in music and writing, often dreaming of running away from the norms and obligations of his social standing to become a writer - taking his beloved sister with him, obviously. Though Cordelia cared little for his dreams and even found them to be scary, she wouldn’t voice so towards her brother whom she just wanted to see happy and have near her.
As the years passed by, the time the siblings could spend together grew more and scarcer as Laertes was prepared to one day become the head of the family. Cordelia started noticing changes in her brother’s behavior as he grew quieter and more withdrawn the more the expectations on him rose. He would often go out and stay at his Gentleman’s Club till late at night or even the next morning, and though Cordelia was worried, she wouldn’t voice her concerns. At the age of 15, Cordelia went out to look for her brother and to her great shock found him in a very delicate situation with one of the kitchen maids. Terrified and disillusioned, she completely broke ties with him, not even letting him explain himself, no matter how many times he pleaded.
A few months later, Laertes went on a solitary trip to main land Europe in order to visit distant family members. As weeks passed by without a notice from him, the family started growing worried and their fears would soon prove real. On the sixth week of his disappearance they learned that their son and only male heir had committed suicide. As if to make matters worse, they also found out that in the years before his untimely demise he had started to gamble and had accumulated enough betting debts to seriously endanger his family’s finances. The fear for their future and financial satiability soon replaced the sadness over their son’s death and Mr & Mrs Doherty were quick to come up with a plan of how to keep up their affluent life style, their yet unmarried, youngest daughter playing a major role in it. Despite her obvious depression and feelings of guilt over her brother’s death, Cordelia was since then prepared for her introduction into society, so she could be out on the marrying market by the time her mourning period was over. Not given any time to process her brother’s death and feeling powerless facing her imposed on fate, Cordelia grew cold and bitter, deciding that she would at least try to reel in a husband that suited her tastes.
The very first man showing interest in her turned out to fulfill all criteria. Bernard Rochester was a man born into middle class, but had acquired massive wealth over his youth by founding a nowadays renown manufacturing company. He didn’t only seem to find Cordelia appealing for her looks and her name, but was genuinely intrigued by her as a person. Though she didn’t initially love him, Cordelia found that the man become more and more dear to her throughout their comparatively long courting period and couldn’t wait to leave the home that she had learned to hate in order to start a whole new life with him somewhere far away. Eventually, the day of their wedding came. When Cordelia was about to prepare for the wedding night, the door to her new bedroom opened and was entered by neither her husband nor a maid to help her undress, but the brother everyone believed dead. Skin covered in red spots and dressed in cheap, unkempt clothing, Laertes claimed to have only feigned his death in order to start the life he had always wanted. He now lived in Paris and earned enough to make a living and had come in order to take Cordelia with him - like he had always promised. Shocked at first, Cordelia gave in to the silent fury that had been seething in her for the past two years. She blamed her brother for being selfish, having almost toppled his family into poverty and ultimately ruining her life. When he tried to soothe her and make her keep her voice down, she threatened him to scream and call for help if he didn’t leave her house at once. Disillusioned by his sister, whom he didn’t recognize as the sweet person she once used to be, Laertes grabbed for a candle holder and in a fit of rage struck his sister’s head with the dull end. She fell lifeless to the ground, still wearing her wedding dress.

Additional:
When Cordelia awoke in the Mirror World, she had no memory of her previous life whatsoever, aside from an ever lingering feeling of having been wronged by the world. Her disaposition has ever since then displayed an aura of passive annoyence and agression towards the world surrounding.
Even though it is common in the Mirror World, she would rather die a second time than being caught in traditionally male clothing and secretly frowns upon those who do.
Cordelia doesn't care much for the killing part in killing unholy spirits as she enjoys the salary and the things she can get for herself by spending it.
Certainly not the most athletic person around.
Whether the Duchess is a title or a name is not up for debate.
She owns a pub (Gallow's Arms) in the Mirror World, but since she's barely there to cater after it, she often has Cordelia looking out for it in her free time.
