Description
This is the variant cover for Uncanny X-Men #522 from Marvel comics featuring the return of Kitty Pryde. I've included the process to the left of the final image showing the steps. First comes the layouts and my editors at Marvel choose the image they like best. Second is a tighter layout of Kitty on the bullet and the third is the final inks.The homage here is to the movie Dr. Strangelove and the old 30s and 50's pin-up girl bomber art of WW2. Penciled and inked on 13'X19' bristol board and painted in photoshop.
I have heard some people on other comic messageboards say is phallic or kind of raunchy. Not sure if that says something about the image or the viewer

hi did you use a software to render the image. as i am having trouble with my ink line in flash. I have an animation to create how ever the line is just inconsitent. it keeps changing shape. any help please quick

I really enjoyed. great pencil and colors. after the rogue, Kitty is my favorite character of the x men! its pretty cool feature. ^ ^

KITTY IS BACK?!?
I have MISSED her. Tell your editors at Marvel that the eventual return of Bruce Wayne takes second place to Kitty for a lot of us. And I'm such a joker fan I take on his persona but , well, its Kitty!
Seriously, I had not thought about it till now but I really did stop reading X-men titles when Kitty sacrificed herself. The other Marvel titles went. Then DC when they went all OUT there and started going out of their way to screw up The Joker and have everyone kick him around. It's been a little over a year since I bought a comic, I think, from any company.
And it all started with the loss of Kitty.
This should get me to come back and start checking things out again, just to see if the various titles have gotten their act together.
With all that being said, it really deserves art work worthy of her return and you delivered. I love the concept and the execution. But best of all you got her face, expression and spirit right. THAT"S Kitty.

I belatedly realized she is not coming back, she is already here and this is old news to some. Like I said, I completely dropped comics for about a year.
Just ordered it on Amazon though.

I am in teh same boat, I first stopped reading most comics when Excalibur (first volume) ended and it took a while for Kitty and guys(Kurt/Peter) to show up in the X-Men.
I still read Thor during then. When she returned I started reading X-men again, only to stop when a few months after she went missing after the space station was blown up by Seth of the Neo. I stopped again with all comics when after the bullet incident.

This is so amazing. I'm glad you added a picture of the lineart as well, so we can examine the process a bit. (I saw the lineart for this piece in the Twenty-Two gallery reception last weekend! It's a real treat to be able to look at your work so closely.) Looking at the Photoshop coloring, I'd just like to ask... with the clouds, do you paint beneath the linework in a separate layer and then go back to erase it? And for the reflection... well... how DID you do that?
Jeez. Just everything about this piece is fantastic. Every image you create I feel like I could examine for hours! Really inspiring!
(Speaking of inspiring... totally enjoyed the panels at Heroes Con this year! Super informative!)

I absolutely love Kitty Pryde especially in Astonishing X-Men. When I first saw this cover I yelled, 'she's coming back whoo hoo!' I think the composition is beautiful.
