Description UPDATE: IMPORTANT REMINDER: DO NOT USE THIS SPRITE AS IT IS MADE REDUNDANT BECAUSE MY NEW MIDLAND RAILWAY JOHNSON 0-6-0 SPRITE PACK HAS BEEN UPLOADED!

Three days... reminds me of a certain Johnson 3F...
Here is Day Twenty-Two of Diamond Jubilee's Advent Calendar: a sprite of another obscure Railway Series character— Eagle the Red Engine.

From top to bottom:
- Eagle as built
- Eagle with belpaire firebox
- Eagle in red
- Eagle in red, but with Ross pop safety valves and 3500 gallon tender

Eagle was the last Johnson 3F 0-6-0 to be built for the Midland Railway. Like all his brothers and sisters, he was initially fitted with a round-top firebox, but was rebuilt with a Belpaire firebox a few years later. Shortly after his rebuild, he arrived on Sodor where he was painted red with black lining. Eagle proved to be a Responsible, Reliable and Really Useful Engine since day one. He is also clever and wise, and gives advice to the smaller engines. Although he is a little sarcastic like James, he is greatly trusting of other engines (except for Henry, whom he tried to pull out of a tunnel). He can also get irritated every time he is mistaken for James, but this problem is solved in a letter stating that Eagle is a totally different engine altogether. Because of this, he tends to have something of a rivalry with James. He is also known to hide confessions and secrets for no given reason, which hints that he is rather insecure deep down. He made a strange disappearance from the Fat Controller's Railway in 1943 or 44 (Gordon even claimed he was murdered in cold blood by William), but was found in working order at the Hickory Vale Railway. He was then returned to the NWR and remains there ever since, though mainly on the Norramby branch.

Eagle is based on a Johnson/Deeley 0-6-0. These were derived from the smaller 2F 0-6-0's, and engines of both power classes were built from 1875 to 1908. A total of nine-hundred-and-thirty-five were built in several different varieties. They were very useful engines, even more so than the LMS 4F's (which wouldn't steam). All 3F's were built with round-topped fireboxes, but they were eventually re-built with Belpaire fireboxes. Most 2F's were re-built with larger Belpaire boilers, others were re-built with Belpaire fireboxes but kept the smaller boilers, and others remained un-rebuilt. Despite being labelled as freight engines, they were often used on passenger trains— even on excursions. Withdrawals of the unrebuilt Johnson examples began in 1925, and the last few engines were gone by 1964. Despite their large numbers and late survival, none was preserved.

FACT: Only a few Johnson 3F's were seen with 3500 gallon tenders, including Eagle in his later years; all other engines of this class had 3250 gallon tenders.

You can use it if (or however) you like to use it, but credit is due.

ENJOY!

I know Alex, I was inspired of a sprite that was on a website many years ago till it went down in 2015.

Well Alex, Kevin in my series is going to be based like Harvey but with six wheels, painted blue, with cowcatches and sideplates.

I don't think I like that idea - I'm already happy with Kevin being a mobile crane.

Hello there Eagle, your red paint looks nice and so does James and how's Sodor been doing with Falcon, Western Huntsman, Barbara, Ethel, Crompton, Archibald, the Pied Piper, Susan and Lindsay.

Eagle: why thank you
Life on Sodor has been, and still is, lovely for me. I managed to get on well with all the other engines mentioned above, though I had my doubts about Archibald 'till he redeemed, and Ethel due to her GWR bias (I don't mind the other Western engines; they're all good-natured though ).

Eagle: Today was full of surprises; I heard from Henry the Green Engine at Vicarstown station this morning that James the Red Engine was to pull the Santa Special. I was slightly worried that he might show off like anything. He did... but he was so full of himself that his mechanical lubricator had failed. He had to be taken off and sent to the Works, and I had to take the train on. It came as a surprise that I handled the train even better than James did. He was fuming because the Enthusiasts admired me more. Poor James!

Eagle (continued): James is presently at the works; but don't worry, he'll be mended in time for Christmas Eve.

Eagle: Oh! That's my Guard's whistle. It was lovely talking to you, James; but I have to leave with my passenger train. Goodbye, and have a happy Christmas.
Peep peeep!

Eagle (to himself, merrily): Mustn't be late, mustn't be late...
