The North Eastern Railway's Class E1 is a remarkable design being unique in that it was constructed over a period of 54 years, by 3 different railway companies. Designed by Mr Wilson Worsdell for the NER and introduced in December 1898, the first 20 engines were constructed at Darlington works in 1899. His successor, Sir Vincent Raven, had 20 more built in 1914, with very slight modifications to the original design, then a further 10 built in 1920 and another 25 by Armstrong Whitworth at Newcastle in 1922/23. Sir Nigel Gresley of the newly-formed LNER re-classified the E1's as J72's and then built 10 at Doncaster works in 1925. And then remarkably 54 years after the class was introduced, British Railways built a further batch at Darlington; 20 in 1949 and 8 in 1951, bringing the class total to 113.

These 0-6-0 tanks were mainly to be found in shunting yards, coal staithes, dock yards and station pilot workings all over the North East. Some eventually found their way to Scotland after Grouping. The NER and LNER built examples became numbers 8670-8754 in 1946, and then 68670-68754 under BR ownership. The BR built locos were numbered 69001-69028. All 113 examples remained in traffic till 1958, when following the introduction of diesel shunters withdrawals of the earlier engines began. All bar two were scrapped by 1964, during which time numbers 69005 and 69023 were taken into Departmental Stock as numbers 58 and 59. They were allocated to Gateshead at first, but latterly at North Blyth and Heaton, where they were used for de-icing.

Both were withdrawn near the end of steam in the North East; 69005/58 was scrapped, while 69023/59 was purchased for preservation. 59 was delivered to the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway, given a fresh coat of paint and given back its old number, named Joem after the new owner's parents, and the rest is history. None of the NER nor LNER built examples were preserved, but 69023— a BR built engine— has, and it presently works on the Wensleydale Railway in the North Riding of Yorkshire. Interestingly, the last boiler 69023 received during its second and last general overhaul in BR days was from a NER-built J72, 68679 (the tenth oldest in the first batch of the class).

FACT: 69023 is painted in the same livery as its class mates 68723 and 68736 had while on station pilot duty at Newcastle and York— NER pattern lined green.

You can use it if (or however) you like to use it, but credit is due.

ENJOY!
