I adoooree this. I made a gingerbread house a couple of weeks ago, and me being foolish didn't draw up a very good plan and of course my roof caved in and all hell broke loose. ahaha.

This is absolutely beautiful, and I'm amazed by the time and attention to detail. I absolutely love carousels, too, so that makes this even more awesome. Well done!

Thanks a lot for the praise. I'm somewhat perfectionistic, so I wanted a lot of fancy detail in there.

Thanks. :-> It could have been more polished though - if I ever make another one (hopefully I will) I'll know the worst mistakes and problems to avoid.

Hehe. It already took me weeks to make this, it would probably take a year for a zoo. :-P I think I'll probably make another gingerbread house for charity this year, but with an entirely different theme this time.
Thanks.

Hehe. I am actually a vegetarian, but I think I can allow myself to eat gingerbread elephants. ;-> I actually bake vegan stuff most of the time, but this thing isn't vegan simply because I have so little energy that I couldn't make the dough myself and had to buy it. Not that most of the candy is vegan either, but I could have easily made the whole thing without animal products, so that it would have been a vegan animal carousel. ;-P

Kiitos.

Way cool, I love a cirucus! I bet that took a long time. Have you ever worked in clay?

diamondie In reply to DDishman717 [2007-03-06 19:54:57 +0000 UTC]
Thanks. And no, if you don't count a short school course focused on clay where we made a maracas. :-P Mine was UFO shaped, so much for artistic ambition.
I don't know about clay, but I'm planning to try marshmallow fondant soon. It's supposed to have a somewhat play-doh like consistency.

Thanks! Actually I just participated in a many-sided artist contest here on DA with this piece and some of my digital art, photography and literature.
IMO the fact that culinary art is destroyed by eating is one of the best things about it. Sure it feels sad to "destroy" such a piece, but it is the function of this kind of art. And it teaches one to grow less attached to material things or something like that. No artwork lasts forever.
CFS can definitely get better, it does that for many (perhaps even most) people, but for one who has always only progressed it doesn't seem very likely. But there are still some things left to try. I've discovered some slightly helpful treatments even after writing my latest journal.

Excellent work, lots of attention to detail. You're a very kind soul donating it to the kids hospital too, I hope you get some wonderful karma in return.

Thanks! I couldn't make a piece like this without going way overboard with the detail.
I really wouldn't mind some good karma, though I'd probably get better points on that front had the piece been originally made for the hospital and not as a contest entry. :-P But would have been nice to hear what the kids (and the nurses and doctors) thought about it.

What a brilliant idea. Can we see the other animals sometime? Carousel's are always a favourite with the younger kids when the funfair comes to town.
Happy Christmas!

Thanks! I took a picture of the leopard and the giraffe just before I gave out the piece on Wednesday (the zebra and camel didn't turn out so well - the camel shape is great, but the decorations ended up less than great and even worse the leg was broken and fixed with melted sugar). :-P I haven't had the chance to unload them yet, but I should be able to put some links here tomorrow or on Monday.

Thanks for the comment! I was given a permission to enter this in the DA contest, otherwise I wouldn't have placed it in this category. I hope your kids don't demand an animal carousel now. :->
The problem with these things is that I don't know! I tried to ask my dad but he doesn't seem at all keen on the donation idea, I don't know why. He just suggested I'd give it to my little sister's after school club, which seems a bit silly since they are all normal pampered kids who probably eat more than enough gingerbread at home. Pretty much all healthcare in Finland is public and concentrated into big units, not much small homes or centers and those that do exist I'm not aware of.

Holiday spirit is something I haven't had for years, but in the end I donated the piece to a psychiatric unit of a children's hospital in Helsinki.
