Background:
Liese's mother died and right after she was raped. She had no friends or mom, only father who's busy for his work. She's depressed and really scared of others, especially men. And she loves cafés.
Helmut's father was executed at 1944, and almost right after his mother was taken to concentration camp. After war he got his mother and uncle back, and moved to England. At first he had hard times there, but later it was much better.

They met in a café in Germany. Helmut came to his grandparents to study his motherlanguage, and fed up to their talking and escaped to nice café to rest his ears. It was rainy day, and he was all wet and cold. He noticed Liese, who sat alone next to window, and he asked can he sit to her table.
He started to talk to her normally, not like to freak like she was used to. He noticed that she is really pretty, though her eyes are a bit creepy. They talked, and Helmut got to know that Liese doesn't have any friends. That made Helmut want to be with her, because he knows how it feels to be abandoned.
They saw each often, and after a while Helmut asked Liese. They started to date, and that summer they saw each other every day.
