Β Lady Jasmine of Aquilonia had been taken unaware, and sold into slavery. She was chained in the market like a dog, waiting to be bought. The chains that held her were not strong, being of mere copper, but they were beyond her ability to break. If she did break them, what then? She was far from home, naked and without friends. Men stopped by, leering at the captive noblewoman, and laughing at the angry face she made at their crude remarks. Prospective buyers would, for a fee, be allowed to examine the "merchandise," squeezing her breasts and buttocks, and for a larger fee, being given permission to inspect her most intimate areas with their eyes. Lady Jasmine's protests were silenced by the blows of a leather strap between her legs, held open by the slave merchant's guards. Men paid money to watch this spectacle, as well.

Jasmine heard the clop of hooves at near the end of the alley where Assul Ben Mordan sold his wares. She heard the jingle of spurs as the rider dismounted, and saw the rider brush past one of Assul's guards to stride up to Assul. "And what can this unworthy one sell the noble lady? I have many fine wares, all for a reasonable price." The hooded rider pointed to Jasmine. I wish to inspect the slave girl myself." She walked up to Jasmine, the Shemite at her heels. "Surely, the lady understands that there is a small price to pay..." The rider, towering over Assul, pressed a gold coin into his hand. "Leave us." Hassan backed away, bowing. "The Lady is generous. May Ishtar's blessings fall upon her!"

Jasmine had learned not to look up, because sometimes it would be seen as a sign of defiance. The rider crouched down in front of her, and all she could see was her thigh high riding boots. "Look at me, Lady Jasmine." No one had called her that since she was abducted. "Raise your eyes, and look at me. In the name of King Conan, look at me." The rider brushed aside her hood, revealing her face. It was Princess Sonja, daughter of King Conan himself. She had met the Princess several years ago, when her father had taken her along on a trip to the royal capital of Tarantia. Sonja was about five years younger than Jasmine, now in her early twenties, and she had inherited Queen Zenobia's beauty, but her father black hair, and piercing blue eyes. Even at sixteen, she was as tall as most men. Now, she stood a head taller.

Conan had taught his daughter to handle a sword, or a bow, or ant other weapon for that matter, as well as any warrior in the kingdom. The king had taken Jasmine and Sonja along with him on a hunting trip, and Sonja had slain a bear with just a knife. "Your Majesty, your daughter is wild as a Pict." Realizing what he had said, Lord Bron said, "Please forgive me, Majesty, I forgot myself." Conan had merely laughed, and clapped Bron on the back so hard, he nearly unhorsed him. "No offense taken, but you were wrong. My daughter is not as wild as a Pict; she is as wild as a Cimmerian. And simply call me Conan when we are alone, and King Conan at other times. You have fought loyally beside me too many times for formalities."

"How did you find me,?" Jasmine asked. "The fools who stole you away left a trail a blind man could follow. Your horse ran away when you were seized, and ran back to your father's castle. Men could find no trace of you, and your father sent word to my father, and I volunteered to come looking for you. Many men spoke of you, and were very forthcoming when I held a knife to their groin." Sonja produced a large knife from her boot. "You may need this soon." Jasmine slipped the knife into the cushions she was given to lay on. The knife was like the ones used by the Vanirmen, with a blade a foot long, and the heavy pommel alone could crush a man's skull.

Β Sonja rose to her full height. "I will take this slave with me. "And what will you give me for her?" The Princess towered over the merchant. "Nothing, you flea on the arse of a lame camel." Assul launched a stream of Shemitish curses at Sonja. "Foolish, arrogant slut! Soon, I will have another naked slave for sale!" A shove from Sonja sent him falling backward, where he landed on top of Jasmine. No one had noticed Sonja picking the locks on Jasmine's chains; a skill which Sonja had learned from her father. Assul screamed as Jasmine's blade found a home in his stomach, spilling his guts all over the dusty ground. Seeing their source of gold in mortal peril, Assul's guards rushed from each end of the alley. Sonja drew her sword, and the small axe she carried on her belt. These men were armed with tulwars, and poorly trained. Sonja had been using weapons since she was old enough to lift them. One guard's blade broke on the superior steel of her sword, and while he stood dumbfounded, her small axe cleaved his skull. Knocking the dying man aside with her shoulder, Sonja turned to face the other guard. Gripping the hilt of his tulwar with both hands, he swung mightily, and might have taken Sonja's head off, had the princess not ducked. Her opponent off balance, Sonja thrust her slim pointed blade into his stomach, and her sword came up, catching on the man's breastbone, and she lifted him up with her sword, tossing him aside to land near his dead comrade.

Β "The City Guard is coming! We need to go! Quickly!" Princess Sonja said, "I will buy us some time," and picked up a small chest of gold and jewels, and threw it into the air. There was a mad scramble for Assul's treasure, which even the City Guard joined in on. Sonja had been told long ago by her father that men were pretty much the same all over where gold was concerned.

Sonja and Jasmine were soon up onΒ Sonja's horse, and near one of the city's gates, a livery stable was found, and the owner was well paid to supply a horse and tack for Jasmine, plus some simple clothing, and even more to have never seen them. In a fortnight, Jasmine was back in Aquilonia, on her way to her father's castle, accompanied by Princess Sonja.

I don't know about the story but I do know the moral: don't leave sharp objects within the reach of captives. Even really cute ones.

Until this picture, I never noticed Jasmine Sinclair was left-handed.
I guess I was too busy looking at everything else on her body.
(This knowledge is sure to come in handy if she is ever the opposing pitcher and I am at the plate. Add that to the scouting report on her curves, which I must say was highly accurate.)
