The six battleships of the Connecticut class entered service with the United States Navy (USN) beginning in 1906. They were typical pre-dreadnoughts of their time, with 12-inch guns (in two twin turrets) as their primary armament and a mixed secondary battery of turret-mounted 8-inch guns and casemate-mounted 7-inch guns. They were also the last pre-dreadnought battleship class built for the USN, with the following South Carolinas being contemporaries of and sporting their own share of novel features as did the British-built HMS Dreadnought, which forever redefined battleship construction. Back to the subject, however. This was the USN battleship class that finally ditched the old arrangement of secondary gun turrets mount atop the main ones, given that they had not proven very effective when used by older battleships during the Spanish-American War of 1898. Connecticut followed the British Royal Navy (BRN) pattern of mounting its larger 8-inch secondary guns in four "cornered" twin gun turrets. They were widely considered to be the most powerful pre-dreadnought battleships in the USN and compared well with their contemporaries at the time, such as Great Britain's King Edward VII class. All six ships in the class served with the U.S. Atlantic Fleet during their entire service careers. Their first military action was supporting U.S. forces during the Mexican Revolution. Once America became involved in World War I they stayed at home so the USN's newer and better dreadnought type battleships could be sent overseas to support the Allies, and for the most part they escorted convoys or served as training ships until the war ended. They helped ferry American soldiers back from France after the war in a World War I precursor to World War II's Operation Magic Carpet, and after that all six were relegated to training roles due to their age and obsolesence. All six were sold for scrap in 1924 in order to comply with the terms of the newly enacted Washington Naval Treaty. This is a straight port with no changes by me. Yes, it's low poly, but it's free - so don't complain. The only other free one of which I know at this time (May 2021) is TurdF's higher quality but waterline only SketchUp model at Google's 3D Warehouse. Expect to have a lot of fun reflipping flipped normals on that one if you try to port it, as I've already experienced with some of his other warship models. (grin) You'd almost be better off building your own from scratch if you want a higher poly Connecticut. Good luck!
This is not my model. All I did was port it to OBJ for you. Please credit the folks behind the Total Realism mod for CivIV if you use this in any of your own 3D projects. You do not have to credit me for my OBJ port.
