The nine pre-dreadnought battleships of the Majestic class were built for the British Royal Navy (BRN/RN or Royal Navy for short) from 1893 to 1896. Majestic and Magnificent respectively were the first to enter service in December of 1895, with Hannibal and Illustrious the last to be commissioned into service in April of 1898. They were built primarliy to ensure that Great Britain would have the biggest and most powerful navy in the world at that time, staving off similar build-ups by first France and then Russia respectively. They were also innovative in multiple ways. They were the first to add armored gun shields to their barbette-mounted main guns, which were the forerunner of the main gun turret designs used by all later capital warships in subsequent eras (NOTE - a discussion about true turrets vs. barbettes is beyond the scope of this document; go look it up). Their new BL Mark VIII 12-inch main guns were the first to use smokeless propellant, and the new main gun itself would become the standard main gun for all British capital ships for the next 15 years. They were the first British warships to use Harvey armor for protection, which was lighter yet stronger than previous warship armor types. Their bridges were relocated to the base of the forward mast instead of on the mast itself to prevent the bridge from collapsing downward and being destroyed by a direct hit on the mast. They were also both excellent sea boats and excellent performers, and considered among the most successful overall designs of their day -- which meant they got copied and imitated by everyone else (grin). Their only drawback was that they ate up coal at a furious rate; however, later partial conversion to oil-fired burners would offset this. They were very active during the tail end of the Victorian Era and throughout the subsequent Edwardian Era, serving around the world as showpieces for British naval might. Their age prevented them from all but secondary roles by the time World War I came around, and their last combat role in force as a group was to protect the ships of the British Expeditionary Force (BEF) as they were shuttled to France at the start of the war. Many were disarmed and subsequently used as troop ships while some kept theirs and served as floating battery ships. It was in the Dardanelles that the class ship Majestic was lost when it was torpedoed and sunk by a German U-boat. All but one of the eight surviving Majestics were scrapped in the early 1920s. The lone exception was Prince George, which avoided its fate by wrecking while being towed to the breakers. This is not my model. All I did was port it to OBJ for you. Please credit all of the wonderful people behind the Total Realism mod for CivIV if you use this in your own 3D efforts. You do not have to credit me for my OBJ port.

TRIVIA - The design for HIJMS Mikasa, currently the world's oldest surviving battleship, was inspired by that of the British Majestic class.
ASIDE - Okay, so it's obviously low poly. Consider the program for which it was made. (grin) This was meant to be seen from way high up and far away, and you don't need superealistic detail for that. That's why it's missing davits for the small boats and other such things. That said it's surprisingly good for what it is IMHO. I'm sure somebody out there will have a use for it. For me, it makes for nice low-poly placeholder given the uniqueness of its subject matter until such time as I can get a better model.
