Canon EF 100mm f2.8 is a very powerful / one of the sharpest macro lenses on the market in the Canon line up.

Don't be...
EF 100mm f2.8 macro can be held for $350-400 USD via ebay. Considering they are usually $580-600 in stores in NEW condition.

I've always wanted to do that kind of photography but I think my lens sucks a little too much for that. The colors of this one are stunning and the composition makes it really impressive. Great job!

You must have a true macro lens for this kind of work.

Yeah I kind of deducted this.. My lense is a 17-85mm f/5.6, so I can't do much with macro shots.

I know Sigma and Tokina make some very sharp macro lenses. If you do get some money together - Tokina 100mm f2.8 macro is awesome! Remember these are fixed focal length lenses and can also be used for portrait work too.

Well any zoom lens will do. At night you don't have to worry about distortion or flares appearing on the lens. I used my 17-85 IS USM lens - and yeah, it sucks too. Long exposures can be taken with just about any type of camera, you just have to find out what camera works for you. A tripod is a total MUST as well!

But this piece looks more of a really short exposition instead of a long, no?

1/60 sec is pretty slow for a shot like this. You want the fastest time you can get for a droplet shot and a decent flash.

Ooohh, you had a flash?

yeah I used a cheapo sunpack flash. But I have also used the built in flash on the 40D as well for the same effect. If I wanted do anything larger I would have gone with the high end speedlite ~ 580.
