It's a reference to the original Half-life game. In it Gordon Freeman(who never speaks a single word in the game) pushes a crystal into a beam as part of a science experiment. Things go wrong when it starts a resonance cascade that opens up a rift from an alien dimension.

It's a VERY high quality fan-made recreation of the original Half-Life. Valve, the original creators of the Half Life series liked it so much, they're actually giving the mod team permission to sell the final version of the mod through steam later on! The mod is not completely finished as they're still working on the game's final chapter, but you can download the first part for free, which is already about 8 hours of play time.
