Not really, it's in the comics and I can't seem to find a scan of it, and the scene isn't 100% spot on. Twilight offers to use a Mind Manifestation spell to enter Big Mac's mind, and says that it shouldn't hurt but that he should tell her if it does.

It was a thinly veiled attempt at addressing fucking Ferguson and race issues.

I wouldn't say he's an idiot for his beliefs, simply that his efforts are misguided and put somewhere they have no business being. Truth be told, the MLP Comics don't typically have this issue that I've seen, given I haven't read all of them and tend to favor particular ones.

It's actually become increasingly worse as time goes by.
The staff's sort of transformed into assholes who herald their beliefs as if they're the right thing.
Lots of people have argued that one of the latest arcs about a deer civilization and nature and whatever (haven't actually read it) has a very "fuck big business/go eco-friendly" vibe to it.
It wouldn't shock me, really.

Doesn't hurt to throw an eco-friendly comic in here and there, although I admit they might have come off a little too strongly... also, deer magic. Did not care for the concept because it just kind of trivializes unicorns.
Anywho...
I can't say much on his beliefs as I'm not sure what message he was trying to send beneath that, but as you said, maybe better not to go into it. What was off was that he misappropriated these beliefs and made poor judgement on a character; Spike never displayed shame of being a dragon, only fear of being an inadequate example thereof. Had that comic been true to character, we would have had Spike maybe trying to act like a better dragon for fear of being deemed inferior, only to learn a lesson about being who he is and that not making him any less of a dragon.
