The cocked head, the self-protecting hands, the bowed legs and pigeon-toed stance put a deft, sly spin on the type of young ballerina picture we are otherwise accustomed to. And there's more here: the spiderweb pattern at the midriff, the gartered look of the stockings where one might expect full-length tights. The pose would be wicked were it not so kittenish. Well, maybe the kittenishness flirts with wickedness. Or is the young lady fearful of and defending against wickedness? Her facial expression could be coy; or it could be self-contented. Or it could be inquisitive, even challenging: who are we to be regarding her so intently, she demands? This image gets under the skin, maybe even into the heart.
