Description Yep... I decided to do more. Mainly just because I could, haha.

As always the originals are on the left-side column. Had to trace a few of these to get them... not as many .gif versions of the icons as I was hoping! Anyway, left-to-right it's: Kushala Daora, Kirin, Lao Shan Lung, Shen Gao Ren, Diablos, Gravios, Arzuros, Qurupecco, Gobul, Berukyurosu, Abiorugu, Brachydios, Akantor, Ukanlos.

Middle row on both sides (as in, the first recolor for each monster):

* Glistening Daora. Not a true subspecies; this is a Kushala that's just recently shed it's old skin. It's pale white plates are still soft, giving it substantially less defense against both raw and elemental damage. Because of it's vulnerability it will rely very heavily on it's flight and wind aura, and like other elder dragons it will flee after a set amount of time if not killed. This means hunters must race to kill it, because otherwise it will develop into a regular Kushala Daora by the time it next appears. The downside to this (besides it becoming more powerful later) is that the Glistening Daora, who is extremely rare to find, has VERY valuable materials. Like silver and golden eggs, they're of no use for crafting but can be sold for a staggering amount of zenni. Their scales are like treasure.

* Thundergod Kirin. A dark-skinned Kirin with a dazzling bright mane. Like the Kirin in MH Frontier, it has a wide variety of attacks to defend itself with. It's thunderbolts have an even longer range (essentially the entire area it's in) and inflict Thunderblight, constantly increasing the chance of it halting a hunter's movements. It's mane and horn can release an intense flash that temporarily stuns hunters and it has even more HP than a regular Kirin. It is immune to sleep element, but luckily is very susceptible to poison.

* Pelagic Shan. Not a subspecies at all, this is a regular Lao: whether it was originally red or ash is indeterminable, though. Like the rest of it's brethren it spent hundreds if not thousands of years laying dormant in a rocky environment. In this case, however, the environment changed around it: this is a Lao who's coastal home was, in time, gradually swallowed up by the sea. Slumbering on the sea floor for ages, it's skin greened with algae and became encrusted with precious ores and coral. It's fought in a new area where it is first intercepted underwater, then in shallow water as it approaches shore. The final standoff is in a defenseless fishing village which the hunters must defend. Hunters can jump on Pelagic Shans' backs, but mine the coral and ore instead of attacking. At G-Rank these Lao's come with their own "minions": man-sized carapaceans that randomly drop off it's body to attack and distract hunters.

* Royal Gaoren. A desert Shen with a deep purple carapace. It travels only at night and wears the skull of the Jhen Mohran subspecies. As much, it carries with it traces of valuable gems. These Gaoren are more irritable than the normal kind, defending themselves more fiercely and actually having a rage mode where they hasten their movements. Standing behind them is a bad idea: like their smaller Daimyo cousins they know how to weaponize their skull-shells and can use the Mohran tusks to great effect. Instead of shooting a powerful acid-blast like the regular Gaoren, they leak a yellow gas that temporarily surrounds them and causes paralysis. This can be especially frustrating when the Gaaren is enraged, as it will use this and it's increased speed to get away from hunters.

* Tropical Blos. A green-shelled Diablos from a foreign land. It's adapted to live in a jungle environment, burrowing through dirt instead of sand and prone to throwing mud and boulders with it's horns. During the mating season the horns of the males become a vivid, fiery red. These are highly coveted by crafters and can be used to make eye-catching armor and powerful weapons.

* Poison Grav. A subspecies of Gravios that's adapted to live solely in the swamp. It is the inspiration for weapons like the Glasya-Labolas hammer and it's materials can be used to make more powerful versions of them. These dark-shelled Gravs retain the powerful beam of their traveling cousins, but pump a deadly toxin from their spines that poisons hunters. They can create splashes of poison with their body slam and new tail-slam move.

* Southern Arzuros. A black-furred Arzuros with a distinctive belly mark. It hails from a hotter, more southerly climate and is most at home at the Great Forest. These Arzuros are bolder than their blue relatives and are unfazed by dungbombs and bomb explosions. They are weak to water rather than fire.

* Booming Quru. These reddish-brown Qurupeccos sport a (comparatively) less ornate hide and inhabit woodland regions. They appear to be more docile and are less likely to call on other monsters for aid. They still defend themselves using their powerful trumpets, however, and in fact have an even more robust "megaphone". They can blare calls with such force that they act as sonic attacks, deafening hunters in a wide radius and blowing them away when close. They can also use it while flying, making deafening combo attacks similar to a Yian Garuga. Breaking their trumpet is the key to a speedy victory.

* Green Gobul. A Gobul subspecies that spends less time buried in mud and ventures less frequently onto land. It has broader, paddle-like flippers and can swim faster. It's body spikes paralyze hunters just like the ones on it's tail, making it tricky to attack when in rage. Not only this, but it can also shoot them out as projectiles when fully inflated, giving it the ability to attack at a range in nearly any direction. Luckily it takes time to regrow the spikes after this attack, so hunters have a brief window to attack it without fear of being paralyzed.

* Shade Beruk. A bright-eyed Berukyurosu known for it's dark hide and sharp intellect. Like a raven, it is very clever and excels at solving problems. It learns the tactics of its hunters at an advanced pace and has numerous moves geared toward dodging, countering, and confusing. Like Doragyurosu it can lift large chunks of earth from the ground, but it uses this weapon with greater precision and has even been used to implement boulders as "shields" to block gunner attacks.

* Badlands Abio. A smaller, hardier offshoot of the Abiorugu that dwells only in scorching hot desert regions. It has very high elemental resistances and more powerful fire breath that leaves standing flames as an area hazard. During the day it stores huge amounts of heat in it's back plates, making them scalding-hot to touch. This allows it to stay warm throughout the freezing night.

* Toxic Brachy. A deep red Brachydios from a different part of the world. Because of it's altered environment and diet it secretes a deadly, G-rank strength poison instead of plasma. The pools it leaves behind are wider and harder to avoid, becoming a true hazard when their creator is enraged. The Toxic Brachydios also moves slightly faster than it's normal counterpart, but has decreased defense and is very susceptible to shock traps and paralysis.

* Guardian Akantor. A tenacious green Akantor that rises from the ocean waves instead of volcanic magma. Gouts of flame flare out from under it's shell-spines when it roars and rages, and instead of having a wind-tunnel attack it shoots massive fireballs with a wide explosive range. It typically does not burrow, but can pounce and perform aerial slams. If damaged enough it will retreat into the surf and try to heal underwater. Hunters must swim after it to another area to prevent it from recovering health; if they fail to do this in time it will flee and must be finished off in a second quest Elder Dragon style.

* Excavator Ukanlos. A brown-shelled Ukanlos that lives at lower elevations, utilizing it's giant shovel-chin to move vast amounts of earth. It has a wide variety of attacks, slinging mud to slow down hunters, hurling giant boulders, and making huge clouds of dust to obscure vision. It can create quakes with it's giant body and is very prone to digging. Ironically, it is weak to the same ice element for which it's White God relative is feared.

Left row on both sides (second recolor for each monster):

* Blackcloud Daora. A fully mature Kushala Daora born with special genes. It's power over the weather is freakishly strong; in addition to controlling the winds it can also summon intense thunderstorms or blizzards. It's electron-charged metal shell emits a soft blue glow which transforms into an electrical aura when it unleashes it's fury. In rage mode it can project arcs of lightning from its wings and uses it's freezing wind-breath unpredictably. It is far more challenging than the standard Kushala, but worth the effort: its materials can be used to make very powerful weapons, including a set of Thunder/Ice dual swords.

* Hellsteed Kirin. A rare, black Kirin with a glowing mane like wildfire. It exhales black smoke with every breath and summons blood-red lightning. When enraged it gains a heat aura like Teostra, sapping health whenever it is near. If enough damage is dealt it will enter a fiercer, secondary rage. In this super-powerful state it's aura becomes fiery, sapping health but also inflicting Fireblight. It's red-hot hooves leave behind a trail of fire as it runs, leaving wide environmental hazards that must be navigated. It gains a unique attack pattern and will attack unrelentingly until defeated.

* Elder Shan. Also not a true subspecies... this is in fact a fully grown Lao Shan Lung. It is a truly gargantuan monster, easily dwarfing the Raviente and so large that it's literally it's own map. Dropped off from a hot air balloon, hunters must work together to do as much damage to this living level as possible. This means destroying the giant spikes on it's back and setting special Dragonbuster Bombs: humongous timed charges which take two people to set and have an extremely wide blast radius. As the hunters go about their task they must also deal with the Ioprey and Remobras who call this moving mountain home. Not only this, but the giant Lao Shan can still defend itself, thrashing back and forth to throw hunters into the air or send them rapidly sliding back. The bravest of hunters can venture ahead into the next "area", climbing up the monster's neck to attack it's head and destroy it's horn. This deals the most damage and yields extra rewards, but can be very tricky to do. Worse still, an unsuccessful attack can rile the Lao Shan's wrath; throwing the hunters off, it "blocks" the first area by reaching it's head back to look at it's body, the second area. For a short while it will then attack with lunges (slow but a guaranteed death) and blasts of hurricane breath that push hunters back at a rapid pace. If hunters go back far enough (under any circumstances) they will enter the third and most dangerous area, the tail. There are no targets to harm here and it is very easy to fall off or be flung into the air. Ultimately, the hunters' goal is to deal enough damage to turn the giant Lao away from civilization. It is the only monster in the game with so much HP that it can never be killed; crafting materials are obtained from carving it's body and the reward screen.

* Titan Gaoren. A very strong Gaoren with thick pinchers and spiky legs. The largest of it's kind, it bears the skull of Raviente. It uses it's arms more than other Gaoren's, slamming the ground to create quakes and tearing boulders from the ground to chuck at hunters underneath it. It has a cannon attack similar to the regular Gaoren, but instead fires a giant fireball.

* Fire Tyrant Blos. Commonly nicknamed the "Rathablos", this rust-red devil is the scourge of the volcano. Stronger and better armored than a regular 'blos, it can hurl explosive boulders with it's horns and set off barrel bombs prematurely by slamming it's tail against the ground. When stuck in a wall it has a chance to free itself by pulling the whole slab of rock off with it's horns, happily slamming it down to break it to bits and crush any unlucky hunters beneath it who'd been hoping to attack it's horns. Worse still, the Tyrant Blos' rage-induced smoke is no bluff... when fully angered it can breath streams of fire.

* Ancient Gravios. A very old, powerful breed of pale-colored Gravios with long spines and a split horn. It's kind is much rarer now than it was thousands of years ago. It has the same basic abilities as the common Grav, but is far more active and aggressive. It has a stronger, broader beam and can hurl blasts of napalm that leave standing flame. If surrounded by hunters and taking heavy damage it will deliberately do a roll to crush them under it's weight. It can be considered a much more powerful version of Gravios in most respects, but is extremely weak against water element weapons.

* Northern Arzuros. A white-furred Arzuros that treks through snow for honey and bugs. It is very clumsy and easily startled, but boasts more HP than either of it's cousins. It's thievery is also not exclusive to honey: since food is so scarce in it's environment it will eagerly take food items of any kind (steaks, fish, nuts, mushrooms etc) from a hunter. Even it's paw swipes have a certain chance to steal something. This same hunger can be used against it, though, since it will gobble up any trap-meats it sees without hesitation.

* Darkblight Quru. A rare, nocturnal Quru with insidious powers. It uses the stat-boosting songs of it's relative in reverse, almost exclusively casting negative status effects on hunters like defense-down, attack-down, element-attack-down and recovery-down. It can make hunters flinch with especially loud calls or put them to sleep with a siren song like the Crimson Quru. It summons Melynxes, Great Thunderbugs, Bnahabras, Nargacuga, Yian Garuga, Deviljho, and Stygian Zinogre. Known and reviled for it's cowardly tactics and tendency to use healing songs when by itself in an area.

* Deep Gobul. A fiendish, unforgiving Gobul that dwells deep undersea and never goes on land. It's entire body can light up, creating a flash that spans the whole area. It can do so without warning, or only flash certain parts of it's body, essentially aiming the flash in a particular direction. When in rage it will puff up even bigger than normal and can unleash a special attack, rapidly deflating and squeezing out a cloud of glowing blue liquid. This unique substance coats hunters for a short period of time, slowing down their swimming speed and preventing them from using items (like the soiled status effect).

* Torch Beruk. A tropical Berukyurosu that travels at night, flying across jungles and islands. Instead of using electrical attacks it has a sweeping flamethrower breath. When enraged, the tips of it wing-tails ignite, swinging wildly like a fire-dancer's torches. It can create dazzling patterns to confuse and surprise hunters and unexpectedly lob fireballs at them.

* Briney Abiorugu. An Abiorugu subspecies which has taken to an amphibious lifestyle. It's tailblade has morphed into a giant paddle to let it swim... though no longer sword-like, it can be swung from side to side with great force and has a wide surface area to hit hunters. It's tail slaps inflicts waterblight while it's breath remains fire, though the flames are now blue and can be predicted by it's plates glowing. Since it can swim, the Briney Abiorugu can flee into water as a means of fast traveling to other areas.

* Cave Brachydios. A pale type of Brachydios that lives deep in caves. It rarely sees the light of day and is very vulnerable against flash bombs and fire element weapons. It produces plasma just like the regular variety does, but its has a unique chemical makeup. Cave Brachy slime takes longer to turn and combust, but it even more powerful. Not only this, it is much thicker and stickier; hunters who run over-top its slime patches will temporarily become stuck, forced to sit over a ticking timebomb while they struggle free. The Cave Brachy also has new ways to implement the slime, dragging it's arms along the ground to make trails and spitting the plasma directly from its mouth. The larger explosions it sets off can also cause rocks to fall from the ceiling.

* Windgod Akantor. An especially huge Akantor with lighter colors and slow, deliberate movements. It's physical attacks are very easily avoided, but this subspecies possesses exceptional wind attacks to make up for it. It's windtunnel breath can be swept from side to side, and when enraged it can summon an aura of freezing wind that blows hunters back. This aura also lowers the temperature of the area while it is in rage, meaning hunters must take a hot drink or suffer stamina loss. If blown back by the wind-aura multiple times (especially if a hot drink hasn't been taken) the hunter can become encased in ice with the Snowman effect. Windgod Akantor can also create gusts of wind by rearing up on it's back legs and slamming the ground, and can suck hunters toward it with its breath similar to Gobul.

* Gold Ukanlos. An especially large Ukanlos with a shining, nearly metallic golden shell. By turning it's back to the sun it can reflect flashes of light to blind nearby hunters. It also absorbs sunlight like a living solar battery, giving it the power to unleash a concentrated beam of light that's both unblockable and unsurvivable. It's shell is extraordinarily hard and can only be damaged by the sharpest of weapons; unprepared hunters won't even be able to touch it. Even with powerful weapons and bombs it can be a long and grueling fight.

Absolutely astounding subspecies; far better and more imaginative than most I've seen. I would love to see these monsters in-game, with how well-thought out they are! Great sprites too.

Amazing subspecies! Where did you find the icons for them? And do you plan on making more?

Thank you! Someone posted a few of the Unite icons on Pixeljoint here: [link] , but all the rest I had to make myself. I'm open to the possibility of doing more, but right now I think I've covered just about everything that didn't already have a subspecies (and I few things that already did, haha).

What about some Mohran or Ceadeus subspecies? Or Deviljho?

DinoHunter2 In reply to KitWhitham [2013-02-20 03:30:33 +0000 UTC]

Well, Mohran and Ceadeus each have one already so I probably wouldn't do anything for them unless I really had a good idea for them (which sadly, I do not!). Jho is one I've thought about every time, but he's so hard to work with since he just wanders from one environment to the next.

Maybe he could use a type of gas, like a noxious byproduct of him being hungry. Other monsters to think about would be Kuarusepusu, Odeibatorasu, Gogomoa, possibly Rukodiora.
