So... I was bored out of my mind today and wanted to draw something. I remembered that I'd promised some non-Toho kaiju redesigns and pretty much copped out, so I figured... what the hell, I'll draw a bunch of Ultraman kaiju to pass the time.The reason I normally don't is... well, I know next to nothing about Ultraman. I've only seen the first nine episodes of Ultra Galaxy, and a few clips here or there on youtube. I don't know any of the main characters, or all of Ultraman's powers, or the general plot, or most of the kaiju... I just know it has a ton of kaiju in it and a good number of them are really cool looking. Aaand... despite there being a million or so of these guys hanging around, there are hardly any good pictures of most of them on the internet. So most of these are just guys I remember from Ultra Galaxy. XP

You should try using the monster archives. The bulk of the Ultra Kaiju are presant there, except for some of the later chohju, (though they're not that cool anyways) and for some reason Dexador and Nagira. Awesome, by the way.

Oh I do- actually I designed their logo. The Archives are great, it's just that some of the images are fairly old and don't show as much detail as I'd like for full-body drawings.
is the guy who runs MA, by the way- maybe you should send him a message about Dexador and Nagira. He's usually pretty good about updating.

No, these are just assorted monsters from the Ultra series in general. Like I said, most of them are from Ultra Galaxy, but not all. As far as I know, Gigsaurus, Gagi, and Silvagon haven't been in UGDB yet.

well, I doubt they would. Gigasaur was an aussie monster, doubt the Japanese who made the UGDB will welcome them...

well i think i'm going to go onto amazon.com and buy as many ultraman DVDs now just because i love the monsters!they might be the cheapest looking thing in the world but who cares?

To be honest, I like the Ultraman's monsters because of the rather quirky yet awesome designs, and the fact it was actually Ultraman monsters that introduced me to kaiju.

Gooood. I see Gudon. He's my fav. Ultra kaiju. I need to catch up on Galaxy, they have another new series out based on it: Ultra Galaxy N.E.O. Tyrant returns!

Well, I've never, ever seen an episode of Ultraman, but somehow I know Redking and Gomora. XP
I mostly look up Ultraman kaiju if someone says something about them-they all do have some pretty neat designs.
They all look terrific, BTW. I really like the way they look.

Ahahaha, Gomess is making a comeback? That's awesome, I'd love to see how they handle his design for a new suit. I wonder if they'll try to better hide his Godzillian origin or purposefully make him look like the big G... and I dunno if there's gonnbe a movie or not. It'd be awesome if there is, I really enjoyed what I saw in Ultra Galaxy.

He is one of my favs of the Ultra monsters, thats why I said so. Gazort would be kinda cool to.

I actually started to draw Gazort, but wound up erasing him. I wanted to do a frontal shot so that I could kinda allude to that hood-shape he's got, buy I effed up the symmetry really bad and couldn't get anything that looked decent. It's a shame cuz, even though I know nothing about him, I think he looks really cool.

I saw the english version of the episode he appeared in, thats probably anohter reason I like him so much. And giving his frill more of a hood quality? Genius, like a manta ray/dinosaur/ grim reaper! I think I saw the return of his children to. Kinda wierd they tried talking to him. I mean very few kaiju are gonna tell you their problems. His was much less of a problem and more of just wanting to eat people lol. Lol, kaiju therapist.

Guh, I know exactly how that feels - finding a good, non-blurry/tiny reference for an Ultraman Kaiju is like finding Godzilla vs. Biollante on region 1 DVD. They all look good - and I'm particularly glad that my two favorites, Gomora and Red King, are in the pic.

Yeah, it's so annoying! You'd think that there'd be some decent screen captures or something by now, but we're still squinting at the same terrible pictures we were years ago. Bleh.
Gomora and Red King were shoe ins, of course! Gomora was one of the first Ultra Monsters I remember seeing, and he's always been one of my favs- I almost crapped my pants when I found out that the hero in Galaxy was him instead of Ultraman, lol. And Red King... he's fucking Red King. Bwahahaha!

Those are some awesome drawings. I admit, I still like to see the episodes with Gomora of the original series (I have the unoffical DVD boxsets that was released a while ago).

A while ago someone uploaded the first nine eps of Ultra Galaxy on Veoh, and I watched em there. Seems they've been taken down, though.

I agree, Ultraman monsters tend to have their own bizarre charm to them. They're about as retro as it gets, and have more personality than most people.
I particularly like how Red King and Kerubim turned out. I always loved Kerubim, and he really shines through here.
I'm surprised not to see Astron though.

Bah, all those name variants! I'm guessing Kerubim is the one I called Kelbeam? And who is Astron? I wound up leaving out a lot of guys I thought looked cool mainly due to lack of good pictures and running out of room on the page, so maybe he was one I looked at and didn't get to draw.

Kerubim is Kelbeam. I heard "Kerubim" first so that's the name that stuck with me.
Astron/Earthtron is a fairly generic, slightly Gorjirian dinosaur with a large, forward-raked horn jutting from the top of his face.

Aaaaaahhhhh, that guy! I remember seeing him in Galaxy and saying that he looked like Junior with a spike glued on. XP Yes, I'm familiar with him. Prolly would've added him in if I had room.
