Description Effulgence:

The state of being effulgent; extreme brilliancy; a flood of light; great luster or brightness; splendor.

UPDATE: If there is one thing i love, then its constructive feedback. I revisted a few things that my eye missed, and here is the final version with a few touches (better atmosphere for bigger planet in top piece, more star contrast in top and middle left pieces, and slight blur in middle left)

This is one of those deviations with an ironic story behind it, lets explain.

Im sure most of you heard about the blackout that affected the northeastern part of the United States and a big part of Canada. Because there was no light and nothing interesting to do, * superkev went to the beach and started taking pictures of insects. He's skill with depth of field always impresses me and i got the idea of trying to apply the effect to space scenes. So where's the irony here? Well, I got the inspiration for a light themed deviation from pictures taken due to the lack of "light."

OMFG THATS DEEP!!!1111one

So anyways, I originally started with a single work, but, as usual, lots of possibilities came up and i was hard pressed to pick one. I figured that i'd make a poster like this one, since i have an empty space in my wall and it would look pretty good there. So i made this with my room in mind, thats why i used that typo (which i can already tell lots of you are gonna hate).

Another thing that i got to experiment with was city lights on planets, you can see them in pretty much all of the sections here. You can tell that they look different in all of them, this is to show the different settings. Personally i like the ones from the top and right the most, since they are subtle. I also thought of using city lights to contrast with the fact that the blackout was the very base of the depth of field effect idea

I used photoshop for EVERYTHING except the asteroids in the bottom pic.

Things i like:

I like the sun in the top 3 pieces. I like how its not sharp and its rather smooth.
I like how the depth of field effect came out, it adds depth.
I like the color variations. I tried to make it all monochromatic, but the colors were more dramatic.

Things i dont like:

Im not satisfied with the starfields. They could use more contrast, but then again they would alter the feel of the piece for the worse. Suns always get in the way. However its nothing disasterous.

Thats about as technical and as thorough as i can get without boring the most of you (although i know many people dont even bother to read the descriptions, meh)

Big thanks to *superkev for his help on helping me get the depth of field effect right, and for pointing out that its impossible to actually get "pictures" like these in space, since the lens would have to be bigger than the planet and considering the distance at which the picture is taken.

I hope you enjoy this one, dont hesitate to leave feedback, as usual

Indeed. I love the different frames and the planets that look like they are lit up by city lights.

I'm no digital expert so I can't give you very good critique, but I'll just say the city lights give this a deeper feel. In God's house there are many mansions, and here we are looking at a few(MY PERSONAL interpretation on the meaning of that passage, don't take my word for it as the true meaning.).

Makes me wonder if another Earth full of humans exists in another galaxy...

great work, 1 thing i dont understand is why the stars on the top photo are blurred if those on the bottom arent?? they should be anyways because its a "shot" from distance

lol! the fact that it is impossible to get such an effect is maybe why I feel there's something wrong with the pics I love them all, especially the middle-right one (I love the color of the city lights), but the depth of field makes us lose the feeling of space being so huge... but great work, as what I've seen in the rest of your gallery!

Your technique is very clean, I like the fact that you don't use lense flares.

you seem to have the whole planetscape thing down like an exact science.... It would be cool to see some contextual work involving the imagery, such as war, peace, psychology... mabye i missed those pieces...

Great polished results.

I stumbled upon it through another artist's favourites. It's a pity, because I am sure that a lot of talent, such as yourself, goes unseen here due to the enormous volume of submissions. Well, I'm glad I saw it. You are a great artist. Keep it up!

if you look at a picture of a planet at night and you can see the lights from the cities youll notice that they are more in clusters and really arent spread out so much (as they are in your piece. Also the light noise would cancel out all the city lights from the planets that were farther away...so maybe you made that bit too bright (on the far planets). Just a thought, but the thing is - even if it isnt "correct" it still looks GOOD. GREAT job!

Dig the city lights...especially since it gives me something to look at, instead of just a backlit planet.
The outoffocus planets in the top panel have grown on me...

i would love to leave you constructive feedback....but.... i can't think of anything to say. my mouth is just hanging there.. you know what i mean? crazy. wicked. wonderful. bliss. ahhh. yummy. the stars are kinda dim tho, that sunlight is a bit overbearing.. but damn, who cares.. f*** the stars, the planets are what keep me staring, esp. that out of focus one on the first pic.. hehe you don't see out of focus stuff very much in hand drawn stuff anymore.. everything has to be crystal clear in focus, know what i mean? yeah... this is pure excellence.

Excellent work dinyctis. I love the concepts you've attempted here, and like someone else has mentioned earlier, got to wonder why on earth didn't think of it myself.

However, I have to question if it actually worked. Certainly not a question on your skill, but I am yet to see a single space scene that conveys a real sense of depth. Well, that was true, there is one pannel on your work, that to me especially accomplishes that. Center-Right pannel, it just seems to me that it 'works', in this case. There is almost a very real sense of depth here, and that city lighting is just astounding. - I would love to see an addition to your existing planet tutorial, or perhaps even a new tut all together on how you go about this. I got some ideas of my own, but am yet to play around with them. Still trying to master the technique from your current planet tutorial, specifically, the texture creation phase. But it's getting there, finally worked out what an idiot I had been for not desaturating the textures I was using first, but anywho, back to the piece at hand..

In the top frame, the right planet very much looks as if in the foreground. That works. However, the left planet seems to be on the same distance plane as the in focus center planet.. Despite the blurring it has. Actually, looking again, it might appear closer than the middle planet, but for some reason my first impression was that it was sposed to be further than the middle planet. Slightly confuddlin there.

Center-Left image, I like it, but I question if the back faces are perhaps a little over lit. Of course, I can't see what is behind the view of the image, but to me at least, assuming no nearby star or other major light source, especially the blue lower planet is too lit. Even the tannish/brown colour, I think at least, is a little more lit than city lights would account for.

The lowest pannel is great, but I must admit, I get absolutely no sense of depth from it at all.

I'm sorry that this comment came out so seemingly negative, because in actual fact, I really like the result regardless of anything I mentioned, it definitely gets from me, and would love to see more experimentation with FoV from ya, see if can really get that sense of depth going there, it'd be a first as far as I've seen.

Middle right one is my favorite. The idea behind that, as well as the deatil on it is amazing.

I was currious on these, do you plan *line-out* the light on these using 1,2 point perspective? Was just wondering since it has a good field of depth to it.
