oh dear sorry that the end of the game gave you such a feel
i for myself was staring at the screen with an open mouth that slowly started to transform into a shit eating grin
i had chills there, thats for sue but i like these kinds of creepy moments and open endings, i like them very much
did you play the dlcs and nightmare mode?
nightmare was a walk in the park i got killed and stuff was harder to get rid off
but all in all i didnt realy see that much of a change
aside from that big ass grasschopper thing at the anderson farm
and the other big vehicle while getting to the lady of the light i realy hated those parts
did you play american nightmare the sequel?

I like mindfuck endings, this was a good one. Not that I didn't love it or anything, it's fun to come up with theories for what it meant.
I haven't played the DLC's yet (I want to), but I have played nightmare mode. Alan Wake isn't hard, not even on nightmare mode (not really scary, either, I found). Actually, when you play the big Harvester (the grasschopper thing!) if you back up right into a corner, it can't get to you.
I'm going to be getting the DLC soon, so hopefully!

Ok, the scary darkness lady has been stuck at the cabin for like ever, and she controls people to do stuff for her and made it so whatever Alan wrote down would come true so she could go free, but the giant metal guy who was controled by her before saved him, then Alan got out and figured he could finish the story to make balance between good and evil until he found out his insane subconscious self named scratch broke free and was starting to spread darkness around, so Alan made a new book to set himself free to get rid of scratch.
Oh and the "It's not a lake, it's an ocean." think meant that the darkness goes on almost forever.
To be fair the game's good butt so goddamn confusing, the entire time I was like

I think you got the basics down, that's a pretty general summary of what I thought the ending was too. C: The darkness itself isn't really an entity, it went into the lady because it wanted to be free and use a vessel to the mortal world to pull the strings of artists. For some reason I still don't quite get, artists seem to have this otherworldly capability that the darkness can manipulate. The ending of Alan Wake, where you see Rose and the FBI agent (I forget his name) suggests that the shadow now possessed him. Rose carries a lantern, signifying she's now the lady of the light. This means the cycle keeps on going.
I think it's an Ocean is a metaphor for the darkness, yes, but also to the fact that it's not all over. The cycle's beginning again, and the darkness, perhaps, can never die.

Thank you, I wrote an essay on it once, actually. If you want other opinions you can try google, lots of people have cool theories. I read a pretty cool one on it all being a dream. I love games where the ending isn't all that clear.

I'm now imagining it was bad for me to have lost interest so early. I stopped playing after the road flares. Didn't help it was a rental.

Haha, don't. It took me a few hours of gameplay to really get into it. The narration and the repetitiousness of combat (not to mention how the camera CONSTANTLY ZOOMS IN ON THEM, which annoyed me to no end) grates, but I really got into it after awhile.
Yeah, that definitely wouldn't help, huh. xD

NOT MUCH TO ADMIRE, GARL.
You're probably gonna stare at me funny when I tell you that I didn't find that game all that scary. Momentarily unsettling at some points, but not terrifying.
Man when the artist-insane-asylum lodge gets attacked by the Presence, BEST PART EVER.

BUT THAT'S WHAT MAKES IT AWESOME! It was one of the only parts of the game I felt true panic, god that game has amazing atmosphere.

I... I just don't know with that game.
The ending just was too much for my brain, I just quit mid-way through their "explanation".

Neither do I.
That ending broke my friggen brain, too. I just looked at my brother and asked "What the fuck did I just watch?". I've been reading fan theories and whatnot, trying to get a grasp of it. Trying hard, not much luck. I might try the DLCs to shed some light on them (ha, see what I did there?), though I doubt they'll explain much. 8I

You should feel bad for that horrible pun, haha.
I just can't get that invested in the game to worry about the ending. I can understand a few things being 1) he wrote the effed up stuff to make it happen and 2) he created that guy to save him, but I don't understand the 'why' and 'how' all this happened. Silent Hill makes more sense than this, haha.

Discombobulates In reply to Palaven [2011-08-29 14:24:08 +0000 UTC]
I SHOULD. But I don't. |D
My friend actually bought it for me for my (last) birthday, and it took me the better part of the year to actually start it. I actually really got into it, which is weird, because it was frustratingly annoying and repetitive at times.
Well, I've been kinda mulling it over for a bit. One theory I like to entertain is that Alan Wake isn't actually "real", he's a creation of Thomas Zane, which would explain why he found a page written by Zane that explained part of his childhood (despite never meeting him).
Man, Silent Hill looks fucking linear compared to this game.

Palaven In reply to Discombobulates [2011-08-29 15:13:52 +0000 UTC]
I couldn't really get invested in the game. It was a good game, but maybe if the conclusion was a bit more concrete I'd love it.
I always thought that thing was planted by bad ladie/guy I dunno. But this is me misremembering months after I beat the game (almost a year woah) That whole Thomas Zane hullaballoo made no sense to me. Though he was quite badass when he showed up.
Compared to that game, yeah, with a few select puzzles where you can't find the last damn piece and you've been around the entire area.

It takes awhile to get into it. I admit it. It's slow (most of S.K's work is, really).
It took me awhile to finally get it and all, Zane's pretty BAMF though not gonna lie.
Oh god now you've reminded me of those damned puzzles.
