This is such a beautiful snapshot of their happier life as a team and a family. I truly hope Raven was happy deep down to be with Tai, she's just flustered to be showing it in front of everyone. She seems nervous to be going in to kiss him, and Tai is very relaxed and comforting, helping her feel more at ease. Summer looks really happy to see her friends getting together like this, I hesitate to call it their wedding but it looks like it could be.

Well, when you're a walking talking generator of misfortune, you probably tend to become quite a bit more dour and depressed. He watched his leader die, his sister turn tail and abandon her daughter, and had to keep his own distance to avoid altering his nieces' lives for the worse. Add to that he also was trained to murder good men before making the decision to betray his tribe for the greater good, I'm just surprised that he's not worse off.Β

When I first saw him, I loved him for mainly his design. It was maybe a day or two before I started loving him for his character. While I personally don't buy into the theory of him being Ruby's father, I love to see his very real concern for her. How he wants to spend time with her, Yang, and all the people he loves, but just can't without the risk of hurting them.

Which only makes him more endearing. His Semblance is also one of the most powerful since it affects reality. It makes his life miserable, but he muddles through it anyway. He's one tough son of a bitch.Β

He is our sweet Qrow and he deserves better. Poor guy probably has to constantly keep an eye on the clock to make sure he's not pushing it when he spends time around people that he loves.

He really is the most relateable character in the series aside from Jaune and Oscar. Like the audience, those two really didn't know what they were in for at the beginning. They just had to ride it out. Qrow on the other hand has already lived a rather hectic life, dealing with almost every form of heartache known to man. It's no wonder why he's aged less gracefully than his sister, what with how much grayer his hair is than Raven's. Qrow really is the strongest character in the series as far as his humanity goes. I always wondered where Ruby got her special brand of toughness from. I think it's safe to assume that Qrow's presence in her life had a lot to do with it.Β

PrimeMinistine In reply to RustedDrAugon319 [2018-09-19 18:57:31 +0000 UTC]

One wonders how much he must blame himself for tragedies that have happened to people around him; and worse, the fact that he may be right. And the guy still pushes to do the right thing, like leave the Branwen tribe behind for good, continue to be a Huntsman. Can you imagine that may be one of many factors in why he's so mad at Raven? She has no such limitation, and yet she abandoned the people that loved and needed her.

I agree 100% about Qrow's presence in Ruby's life shaping the latter into what she is. His toughness, his insistence to go on and do the right thing despite all the crap that life flings his way. Yes, he jokes, he drinks to forget, but he still knows what's right.

Everything you've said outlines why he's such a great character.Β

Did you know that human beings in their capacity for empathy cannot emotionally distinguish between reality and fiction? It's why we get so caught up in the lives of fictional characters like Ruby an Qrow. We care about how their lives have been, we hurt for them, and we want to see them succeed despite them being mere figments of a conglomerated imagination. It's an amazing thing.Β

Qrow is easily the most balanced person in the series. He's someone who muddles through life, trying to do right, looking after his family, and despite doing everything right, he still often loses, which is one of the toughest lessons to learn. Qrow is the face of the weathered man of war who is all but denied the things in life he has wanted: family, peace, and a life that he can be proud of. He makes due with his close bonds with his nieces, treasuring them all the more because they are all he really has. Aside from his and Ruby's similar styles, I think their close bond is why people think that she's his daughter. I feel as though Ruby is the one thing that keeps Qrow sane sometimes.Β

It really is beautifully stunning that these fictional characters can affect us so. And it's really nice to have found someone to talk about this with!

Well, certainly! For a man that must have such intense self-loathing and a degree of cynicism due to how things go wrong around him, to have such a sweet-hearted person like Ruby in his life would be an incredible balance. Qrow is pretty much forced to think about how everything can go wrong and Ruby has dedicated her life to fighting to make things better. And Qrow is no exception; Ruby loves him and will do anything to help and be around him. It's like the world trying to show him that he doesn't ruin everything, he doesn't scare away the people close to him. He's wanted. And the fact that he trained Ruby how to fight could also give him a sense of pride, that he really can add good things to the world.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

RustedDrAugon319 In reply to PrimeMinistine [2018-09-21 13:37:36 +0000 UTC]

I think that out of all that he's done in life, Ruby is the one thing that he is proudest of above all else. She is proof that his Semblance doesn't define every aspect of his life. Their bond is easily one of my favorite parts of the entire series. Qrow's ability to affect reality on that level in some ways parallels Ruby's spark, as defined by Ozpin. Whereas Qrow brings misfortune due to his Semblance being so powerful that it warps reality, making the improbable probable in the worst ways, Ruby does the opposite: Her spirit allows her to bring about the improbable, though not through her Semblance.Β

To an extent, I think Qrow tutored her as a way of countering his own feelings about his powers; that if he could take this spirited young woman and put her on a good path, that it could counter his own nature and affects on the world around him. I genuinely believe that Qrow was motivated to train Ruby as a way of proving his own beliefs about himself wrong.Β

These are some of the best characters in modern fiction.Β

PrimeMinistine In reply to RustedDrAugon319 [2018-09-24 14:39:21 +0000 UTC]

So in his efforts to add something good to the world, not only does Qrow succeed by training Ruby to become an amazing Huntress, but he shows himself that he's not a bad person. I wholeheartedly agree that their bond is nothing short of amazing and is perfectly portrayed through Ruby's letter to Yang at the end of V4. Qrow has taught Ruby that sometimes bad things just happen, but they taught each other that that's exactly why they're so important as forces for good in the world.

The best part is that, as we've gone into, it worked. Qrow realized that he really did have a place among his family, and on a greater scale, a place among the fight to keep people safe. The girl he trained is a textbook prodigy and entered an esteemed fighting academy two years early, and doesn't hesitate to jump on his arm and hug him. Qrow showed himself not only that he can do good things, but that he can be loved. He's part of a real family, warts and all, and isn't afraid of calling out Raven (whom I love for different reasons) for leaving one of hers.

Honestly, this series is like a goldmine of characters. Ruby and Qrow carry such a sense of real love and hope whenever they're on screen.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

RustedDrAugon319 In reply to PrimeMinistine [2018-10-03 03:58:17 +0000 UTC]

Exactly. Qrow is the definition of a man struggling to love himself due to his very nature and power being so great that it can harm everyone around him. He appears to wrestle with the idea that he deserves to be loved by anyone, hence why he's been in the habit for decades of putting himself in harm's way for the greater good. I think that until Ruby and Yang came into his life, that he ultimately saw himself as expendable, and that he fought against Salem's forces to take his reality-bending power of misfortune to make her and her forces' lot as miserable as possible. I think his loyalty to Ozpin is partially based on his satisfaction in knowing that he can at least throw his power into harming someone who deserves it.Β

Qrow is one of the most relateable and enigmatic characters in the entire franchise. He is a weary man holding onto his purpose, even at the cost of his life, and yet struggles to stay alive because his family is proof that he's not just some expendable shock trooper or kamikaze soldier to be sent in to die. Qrow is just Qrow: a hard drinking, scythe wielding, sarcastic motherfucker with a wry grin and a cold one-liner to his enemies. To his friends, he's a stalwart warrior, a dark reaper for justice, and goofy uncle who tells embarrassing stories about his insatiable libido to his nieces just to win a video game.Β

Qrow is who he is. And that's just fucking amazing.Β

I've been trying for a good few weeks to think of what to add, but... damn. I seriously don't think there's anything that can be added.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

RustedDrAugon319 In reply to PrimeMinistine [2018-11-06 21:38:28 +0000 UTC]

Just because you don't think that there is much more that can be added doesn't mean that a great conversation has to die. Hell, Season 6 is airing, and I genuinely believe we'll get to see more of Qrow's development as the origins of Ozpin, Salem, and their respective factions come to life before our eyes.Β

Overall, I think that Qrow stands a head above many of the other characters in RWBY due to his incredible skills as a huntsman, his strange powers, and his world weary perspective. Even James Ironwood is terrified of fighting Qrow in a one-on-one duel, which says a lot about our black bird's skill. Vic Mignogna really helps to bring Qrow to life in his wondrous performance, giving him the tone that we have come to love so much.Β

Oh, man, I've only seen the first episode of V6 (I'm about to buy First soon) but I am loving it so far.

Dude. Vic's performance does insane justice to just how tired Qrow is even though he just keeps pushing through everything. And it says a lot that Qrow is such a dangerous combatant despite being hammered almost all the time.

RustedDrAugon319 In reply to PrimeMinistine [2018-11-10 11:10:31 +0000 UTC]

Take it from a former alcoholic and survivor of clinical depression; Vic's performance as Qrow in that regard is perfect! The lethargy in his voice, the rasp from dehydration from alcohol consumption, and the rolling-his-eyes-at-everything tone when dealing with bullshit tells you that Vic is a master of his craft.Β

Absolutely, Vic's acting is nothing short of a work of art that just keeps on giving. If you were to listen only to his voice, you could instantly recognize just how much shit he's been through. Makes it very nice to see when he's happy, like when he finally found Oscar.

And for what it's worth, I'm glad you're still here. I won't pretend to know everything about you but I'm glad you survived, and I hope things are better.

Hell, I'm not sure how I'm going to react! My mother and I have been watching episodes together, and we still need to watch 2 and 3. I'm really excited to see how Qrow's reaction will be shaped by how intensely he trusts Ozpin, hopefully for the better.

I'm honestly not sure. Qrow has followed Ozpin thus far, but he seemed genuinely surprised by what he saw. When he saw Ozpin's original form, the prime soul, he clearly had never known the exact origins of the man whose mistakes and relationship with Salem shaped the face and history of their world.Β

I personally hope that he has a sense of understanding. I wouldn't blame Qrow for needing time, at all, but I wonder if his own penchant for unwittingly causing misery will play into it. It's still just such a different scale that we're talking about now.
