Description Allow me to introduce my first character design attempt for my upcoming new OC for my story.

Dr. Keylah Livesey.

I searched around for such a name and decided to go for this one.  I went to one of those baby name sites and typed in the meaning 'Healthy'.  The one name that stood out the most to my eye was the Swahili name "Keylah" which means "In Good Health".  Once I felt a liking to that name, I made the decision to make the character have African features since I always admired the beauty of African natives and African Americans as well.
I also felt that this could be perfect for her because I originally wanted her to be the same kind of species that was of the original design of Captain Amelia in 'Treasure Planet' before they decided to make her character a feline alien.  Amelia's original design of a human like alien with long tentacles for hair.  Seen here in the center images:
This way, I made Keylah with tentacles that look a lot more like actual dreadlocks than they do tentacles.
I was also inspired by this look a few months ago when I saw a very beautiful black lady come to our store one day and she had the longest, thickest, and most perfect dreadlocks I had ever seen.  I loved it so much that I had to come up to her and ask her how long it took her to grow her hair out like that.  She smiled and told me it took her almost thirty years.  She said they are heavy as hell, but she had gotten used to it through the years.  I told her they were beautiful and just perfect.

Therefore, I designed Keylah here mostly off of that lovely lady I met.  This is what she basically looked like with a few changes here in there.

Now for Keylah herself.
Since the idea of Captain Amelia's original design is shelved, I made a few idea of the species.
The species name is called Tendrillian.  They are a race that can live up to 500 years and even longer.
Keylah here is however part human.  Her maternal Grandmother was Tendrillian, her mother was half human, and her father was full human.  It was her father that gave her more human features in her face and of course she gained the tentacle hair from her mother and grandmother.  With the tentacle, she has ten extra hands to assist her in medical emergencies.

She is 240+ years old and very wise through her experience of life.  She has more than one medical degree as she wanted to be of medical assistance to many different species of the Terran Empire, including animals.
For my story, Keylah is an old friend to the Seadrift family.  She was the doctor who delivered both Marina and even her own father years ago.
Dr. Keylah is very trustworthy as she took many oaths in her life.  She does no harm and is very good at keeping secrets.  However, she has always had a fondness of playing Matchmaker between her patients.  However, even though she is a doctor who saves lives, she is also a good fighter and will do what it takes to protect others.

Now, as for her design.  If anyone wishes to do it, I welcome all kinds of red lines and criticism necessary before I bring her into the written story.  It'll be a little while until she arrives so there is time to do a few changes if needed.

I love her character design!! Her cheekbones are on point, and that hair is awesome. She'll make a great addition to the team, I can't wait to see her in the story!

She looks pretty neat, defiantly more human looking then alien.  The word hair power comes to mind with her tentacles for hair.
I'm guessing she's more science fiction and doesn't use magical weapons like most of the crew

Some ideas regarding native Africans for reference--Ghanaians have this amazing jet-black skin that's like so black it's blueish in real life.   Ugandans value education and there's many Ugandan business owners.  Nigerians value money above all.  Congolese also value education, and enjoy talking about politics and science.  Black South Africans are very well-educated, but have a chip on their shoulder about the white South Africans living in their country (though most white South African folks have been there for several centuries by now and own farms).

Regarding her ancestry, ummmm--it's not possible to put together 2 species, but this could Handwaved away with genetic engineering.  Let's say CRISPR gene editing techniques (assuming you want to go this far into her backstory).  Two species probably could be put together by utilizing special GMO techniques so there's no fatal DNA sequences for the resulting embryo

It would be interesting to go into her fighting methods--does she use Asian martial arts?  Russian martial arts?  African tribal martial arts?

Regarding her appearance, it might be interesting to give her an African epicanthic fold for a nice single eyelid.  Perhaps her irises could fill most of the eye and really have that 'horse eyes' look that people have to get past to really understand her?  I see her as having blue tentacles + blue eyes and lovely coffee-colored skin for some reason   Like caramel-colored skin.

Final thing is the use of a tentacle as a hairband.  My caveat is that could cut off circulation   What about just having a scrunchie instead?  Or an elastic towel?  I think someone with fleshy hair-tentacles would want to keep everything nice and loose because their tentacles could probably hold their shape by themselves   Anything else would be decoration, I think.

That's my 2 cents

They say it's not possible to put 2 species together, but this is just science fiction.  Sometimes even in science fiction, the impossible is possible.  After all, in Star Trek, not only can Vulcan's breed with humans, but so can Klingons too.  Even Romulans and Klingons breed together.

As for her fighting methods, I do picture her as the peaceful type of fighter, but can be quite skillful with most methods.  Kinda like Vulcans.  A race of peace, but can be quite deadly in self defense, or like a true master of karate-- one who only uses it as it was meant for, self defense, nothing more.  A Mr. Miyagi type of fighter--peaceful, but not one to mess with.  Get my drift?  I've never viewed African tribal martial arts.  I'll have to look it up.
And since I also picture her as one who could have quite the attitude, she could be the type who can really talk you into something or else you're really gonna get it.  Y'know, the Whoopi Goldberg type of attitude.  LOL  Like, say your sick and she has to give you a simple shot and your all better in a matter of seconds, but you refuse to do it because you hate needles.  She'll glare you in the eye and go, "Hey!  You wanna get better or not!  Just sit down and shut up or I'm gonna have to force you, and I WILL do it!"  LOL  And since of her design here is a little of Whoopi Goldberg, think of her character Guinan in Star Trek.  Peaceful, wise friend Guinan of the Enterprise.  However if a brawl suddenly started in her bar, LOOK OUT!  She's got a powerful gun and she's not afraid to put the setting on level 10 after demonstrating level 1!  LOL

The pupils I gave her I thought up of after seeing photos of the eyes of an octopus.  I guess a 'horse eye' is a better term for my results.

The head band she's wearing here is really like a scarf tied around her head.  I've seen many people with dreadlock wear them.  That was my inspiration to have her wear it over her tentacles to hide from other worlds so they would look like ordinary dreadlocks and not tentacles.

I quite like this character!  She feels very original to me, and I love how you include the possibility of genetic modifications with her pupils being different and having tentacles for hair (my sci-fi story has GMO humans lol).  I really hope you make her backstory to show more of Dr. Keylah Livesey!

The only issue I can see is that she's leaning like she's off balance. Concept-wise, it's a little sketchy that somebody would use their profession to play matchmaker, but so long as your other characters react to that properly then it's not a writing issue.

Are you going to make her skin a green color like in the treasure plant concept designs? Or did you have something else in mind?

I really like your concept, her hair and her being some mature looking lady, though I think she looks too normal for an Alien-Hybrid there.
That's really the only thing she lacks in my opinion: Exotic looks. You have two great concepts here, making her a black lady and half Alien. She has to be some eyecatcher! Maybe some less causual clothes, more vibrant colors...
Well, enough talking: I threw together a little sketch here . Maybe it helps you to jump out of your box and gives you some inspiration.
For Aliens it's always a good advice to look up onto google and find new ideas and features for your own work.

Though, really good work there, you're improving with facial features more and more!

DisneyFan-01 In reply to MrsWinterfell [2018-12-18 22:45:27 +0000 UTC]

Well, I kinda purposely made her look more human like.  That way, if she were to go to a world with the gang to help someone and the world they are in doesn't know anything about the life out in space, she would sort of blend in with the humans around her.  For instance, pretty soon the gang will be needing her help while they are still in Arendelle.  No one in that world is ready to know that there are other worlds full of life out in space and stuff like that.  I mean, no one there even knows that Silver is an alien.  They just see him as a large man with a mechanical arm (a bit more advance technology in his arm, but they still don't know that he is an alien).  Anyway, once she arrives, everyone of Arendelle will just see her as a human with really thick dreadlocks, nothing more.

As for her clothes, I just looked up a normal attire that a doctor would wear around a hospital.  Perhaps what she's wearing here in my sketch would be a good attire if she had to join the gang on a world that knows nothing about the alien worlds.  It's her disguise as a human if you will.  ^_^  I mean, she basically wears the head band to cover her ears. . . well. . . what ears?  She has no ears like a human.  So it just looks like she's wearing a headband over her ears to the eyes of a person that doesn't realize she's an alien.

Oh but I love how you made her tentacles in your sketch.  Maybe a bit of color at the end of her tentacles would be very exotic.  After all, I've seen hundreds of people with dreadlocks that have dyed tips.  And her outfit, I love the design, but it doesn't really scream 'Doctor'.  I mean, y'know, almost every doctor wears that famous white coat with a pocket full of pens, tools, and stuff like that.  Maybe if we switch the colors of the coat and the shirt underneath?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MrsWinterfell In reply to DisneyFan-01 [2018-12-19 17:03:13 +0000 UTC]

I see.
Just a thought about that, you could use some cloak, mask or something to cover she's Alien, if you wish to make her more alienlike.

Hmmmh, yeah, yeah maybe switch them, or make her coat white. Maybe even write her Name on the chest in some Alien-Language?
Maybe even give her some fanny bag on her waist with her doctor stuff inside? I mean, she's some experienced woman at the age of 240 years, so she'll know that some doctor-bag wouldn't become handy at such a journey?
Aaaand you could try to mix her Outfit together from a normal doctor attire and some adventurous look like heavier boots and cargo pants?

Though, I'm happy to help and throw some ideas in there! I love to design characters and I really adore your Idea of her!

And thank you for your long answer, now I can relate a bit more at what you're aiming here!

DisneyFan-01  These 'tentacles' (called leku, if I remember correctly) were used in communication. Races of Kit Fisto, Ayla Sakura and Ahsoka Tano created many gestures, performed by their leku, and used them together with their verbal speeches. I think they also have developed a sign language, based on moves of their leku.

John-the-Enforcer In reply to Toaofnight [2019-02-24 16:41:37 +0000 UTC]

Lekku and the language usage therein exists only with the Twi'leks.  Kit Fisto's people uses their head-tendrils like a shark's sense of smell, and could even detect the emotional state of a fellow Nautolan by pheromone traces in the water (which also serves as underwater communication.  As for the Togruta, they're more like display structures and aided in camoflauge, as they evolved from predators on their homeworld of Shili.

On their own watery homeworld of Glee Anselm, those head-tendrils of theirs acted pretty much like a shark's sense of smell, and could even detect the emotional state of a fellow being by pheromone traces in the water (which serves also as a means of communication underwater).

Also interesting that you brought up that Tendrillions' life span is up to 500 years.  Long-lived alien species are not uncommon in science fiction.

In the Star Wars universe, you had the Wookies (with life spans up to 800 years...by the time of "The Force Awakens", Chewbacca is 234 years old...not even middle-aged for a Wookie! ), the Hutts (who could live up to 1,000 years...Jabba himself was 632 at the time of his death), and Yoda's yet-to-be-identified species (Yoda was 900 at the time he passed away).  There are more, but their names escape me at the moment...

In the Mass Effect series, you've got the Asari (all-female race who can live up to 1,000 years), the burly reptilian Krogan (one of their kind lived to be 1,400 years old and still going) the quadrupedal and expressionless Elcor (300 and more is considered elderly in their race), the Keepers (insect like maintenance workers who maintain the massive spacestation known as Citadel who are believed to be as ancient as the station itself), and the massive cuttlefish like beings known only as Leviathans (said to be millions of years old, and the unfortunate creators of the villainous Reapers).

Heck, even the Vulcans of Star Trek had an average life-span of 200 years or more, giving some literal sense to their "live long and prosper".

I might even expand her species lifespan.  Part of the inspiration of her, remember, is Whoopi Goldberg's character Guinan, and there's no telling how old Guinan really is and her species 'the Listeners' is still quite the mystery.

Heck, I recently learned that the Yuatja (or Predators as they are more commonly known), can live to be a 1,000 or more themselves.  These 1,000-year-olds, or "Ancients" as they're referred to, are veterans of hundreds, even thousands of wars and Hunts.

Of course, the Nautolans are not the only aquatic/amphibious race in the Star Wars galaxy.  You've got the Mon Calamari (Admiral Ackbar's people), the Quarren (the ones with the squid-like heads who share the same world as the Mon Calamari), the Gungans (pretty self-explanatory there), the Aqualish (like the one alien shoving Luke Skywalker around in the Mos Eisley cantina), and the Karkarodon (a race of bipedal, shark-like beings that made their first appearance in a story arc [in the Clone Wars series] that took place on the Mon Calamari and Quarren homeworld of Mon Cala.  Ironically, their very species' name and their homeworld of Karkaris is a play on the genus Carcharodon charcharias).
