Description This started out as a quick bust sketch of Jacob, then I decided to clean it up to use on my website. Then I couldn't leave it alone until this came about. Jacob has been through a hell of a lot of turmoil and disappointment in his life, and he has a lot of burdens to bear. His only comfort, particularly when the bottle's run dry, is the empty void of the night sky.

Jacob Mallard (C) moi,

You can read more about him on my website.

Terrific! The heavy use of shadows and the nighttime background really emphasize the dark mysterious side of Jacob and his past

Thank you! I'm glad the mood and the background and lighting worked together.

This portrays the Jacob I envisioned towards the beginning of our RPGs--it captures mood and pessimistic attitude just perfectly! Aww, poor guy. And do I see a hint of color in his irises?? Or lack thereof, I guess. But I see some gray rather than all black! And I love your shading. It looks so simple, but so effective. I need to read a few pages from your how-to-shade book

And sorry it took so long for me to see this and comment--I'm not really on DA much anymore. But so glad to still see DWD art from you!

No problem! I know you have a busy life and don't really have the time for fandom much anymore, so I just thought I'd show you.

I'm glad you like him! AND I'm so glad you were able to pin-point EXACTLY what I was drawing! The first scene in our current RPG, when Jacob returns to St. Canard and is making his way toward the city. So filled with bitterness and rage and self-loathing.

I did add some gray touches to his irises so that it would show a reflection of light from the stars. His eyes ARE still black, though.

This is SO striking. What a great image - the background enhances it but it's striking even without a background, just for the emotion in his face. You bring that out wonderfully.

Thanks, Becca! I drew this actually as a guinea pig to see what the RPG would look like in comic-form. I didn't like anything except Jacob, and it was very fitting for the scene I was drawing. Glad it came through well; I was really channeling him that night!

LOVE this! Seriously, there's something SO endearing about this. Think it might be the shadows, the colours, the background, the sharp lines, the sharp style, his expression etc. in short... EVERYTHING about this is brilliant!

Thank you, Froth! I'm very proud of this one, and I'm glad I kept going on it even if it meant losing sleep. I feel like this really captures Jacob post-Jake. After Jake nearly kills him and threatens to kill his family. It completely changes him.

I'm glad you like it, and I appreciate the comment.

Thank you so much! It means a lot to hear that; a lot of work went into those stories. I hope to have more added to Deeds soon! I'm working on revamping the site right now.
