Bound in seared flesh and blasphemous iron, the Codex Avernal is a profane grimoire that channels the unholy fires of the Nine Hells. Its pages crackle with eldritch runes transcribed in the blood of the damned, each line a forbidden rite dedicated to the Archdukes of Nessus.

It is whispered that this vile tome was forged from the flayed skin of a former saint, whose grace was perverted through unspeakable acts of depravity. With each opening of its scorched covers, the codex howls with the anguished screams of the souls bound within its accursed folios.

Any who dare turn its pages and give voice to its hellish incantations risk being consumed by the insatiable fires of corruption and damnation that burn at the codex's blackened core. Even beholding its eldritch glyphs can scour one's psyche, letting Avernus' agonizing torments seep into the fragile mortal mind.

Properties:
Hellfire Invocations: When a spell is cast from the codex, roll 1d8. On a 1, the casting is enhanced, and a hellfire explosion centered on the caster ignites everything within 20 feet. On an 8, the magic utterly consumes the caster, leaving only charred remains.
Infernal Rebirth: If the attuned wielder is slain, their soul is immediately anchored to the codex. At the next dawn, their body reforms, emerging in a shower of cinders - reborn as a half-fiend abomination cursed to eternal servitude.
Tormented Whispers: Any creature attuned must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw at dawn or suffer from a random long-term madness as the tormented souls within scream unending blasphemies into their mind.

Use in Campaign:
A supreme danger to any realm, the Codex Avernal is an unholy artifact sought by power-hungry warlocks, cultists, and fiendish forces alike. Its hellfire invocations offer capabilities to reshape the field of battle, but each use risks unleashing an infernal conflagration. More insidiously, the codex's influence corrupts the mind and soul - an inexorable path to becoming an irredeemable agent of the Nine Hells if not combated with immense willpower. Vying factions may wage shadow wars in hopes of claiming its secrets to summon Archdevils or even open gateways to the infinite layers of Baator itself.
