only 10 years in service, but more supersonic-flight-hours, than all other jets COMBINED!
(the same for its J79-engines)

The Hustler was the sleekest of the working bombers. We were stationed at Bunker Hill(Later Grissom)AFB in 1969-70, which was the home of the 305th Bombardment Wing Peru, Indiana, though we were just as close to Kokomo. One of only two Hustler Wings left in the inventory. The other was the 43rd Bombardment Wing stationed at Little Rock AFB Arkansas. I was sad to see them go, but the wing and pod design had a flaw which led to a catastrophic failure, with one or both falling off the planes, and forcing the Air Force to retire them, at least that was the scuttlebutt around the base.

I was standing near the main hanger watching the  " Last Hustler " leave Grissom AFB., Jan. 26,1970. ....     " In an Air Force, ... Long, long ago ... Far, Far away ....."

Favourited not just for being my favourite USAF bomber (and severely lacking in love compared with the BUFF and the Briitsh V-force) but for the detail handling of the various metals in the finish.

Lovely creation there! Hmm the plane is huge and then you realise what a huge bomb it carries O_O

If you're thinking that large cone shape in the center, it's not a bomb. It's actually an external fuel tank. It might have been fast, but it didn't have the range many planes have today. Distantstarr is right, it wasn't that much bigger than an F-106 interceptor. But it were pretty! FYI Actor Jimmy Stewart flew these at some point in his military career.

Thank you, didnt know that, I´m terrible at some cold war era airplanes, it is still one of the few remaining things I need to learn in military and airplane history

I wouldn't say terrible, it's just an area you haven't dug into yet. You may be interested in other times, era's etc.

Nothing wrong with that. For me the interest starts in WWII.... the WWI stuff just doesn't grab me, even though it's where it all comes from.

nice 1 man! i really  didn't know what the  huge  bomb  like thing was. it carried nukes that were smaller but what's it?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Distantstarr In reply to comicfann [2014-03-01 17:39:10 +0000 UTC]

It is a fuel tank. All external fuel tanks of jets look like bombs for aerodynamic reasons, to minimize air-resistance that would slow down the plane. I am glad you like it

Distantstarr In reply to TheFellowWithTheHat [2014-03-01 05:11:51 +0000 UTC]

It won't happen because this one has its own needle mounted on the nose, to defend itself against other needles
