In the wake of several wars including the Mexican-American War and the Mexican Civil War, France decided to occupy most of Mexico in the 1860s. Mexico decided they wouldn't put up with that bullshit, and offered stiff resistance. When the French fleet made landfall, the Mexican army fell back to fortify defensive positions, culminating in the Battle of Puebla on May 5th, 1862. Despite being outnumbered, the Mexican army won a decisive victory, boosting morale and kickstarting a war that would last until 1867 in a French defeat. The celebratory date of Cinco de Mayo, Spanish for Fifth of May, was created in remembrance of the Battle of Puebla, and to this day is symbolic of Mexican national pride.
