Yes, child adventure books tell stories like this.

For some reason this reminds me of that dream that Holden describes in The Catcher in the Rye.
Amazing photo. Well deserved DD.

I stole this from Yahoo answers but it's a nice short description of the dream:
Holden [the main character] imagines children playing a game in a field of rye near a cliff, and it is his role to protect the children by catching anyone who comes too near to the edge. Such a job, he says, would make him truly happy. Holden tells Phoebe [his younger sister] he has always wanted to be a Catcher in the Rye (symbolically, a rescuer of children).
The main theme of the book is loss of innocence, I think. Anyhow, it's a damn good book and this here is a damn good photo.

How is it ungrateful?

It is ungrateful in the sense that you can be wandering for hours to find a scene worth capturing, and not find anything. You can also find the perfect scene, the perfect light and angle, and have somebody who steps between you and your perfect subject while you shoot.
It is so much more difficult - random - than a photography that is staged, no matter how difficult it is to set up the right light, find the right model position...

Hmm.I know what you are talking about.
I have wandered the same streets for years
trying to get a particular shot.
And when you finally nail it,you know you have
something special.
