Description Another small step-by-step tutorial. This one is on how to draw canyons for your fantasy map. Didn't plan to submit this here, but it seems people like these kind of tutorials, so I thought why not . I hope you enjoy! cheers

Really useful! I almost want to use this type of canyon in a top-down map to make it more pronounced. To hell with correct perspective!

I've only just stumbled upon your impressive work here, and I'm sold. Your tutorials make me seriously want to finally start creating some rough sketches for my book.

love these. i've always loved intricate details on maps, and now i know how to make them.

think you could do a tutorial on 3d cities? (modern/scifi and fantasy if possible)

like how to illustrate a view of an actual city (if you are able to, i'm sure it'd be a hassle to make). not sure if you ever do modern looking stuff, but i figure i'll ask.

for a top-down view there are loads of tutorials on www.cartographersguild.com. if you mean a birds-eye view of a city, this mainly comes down to a lot (and I mean a whole lot) of work. Tricky part with these is perspective, it has to be very tight to make it look believable. I usually use google sketchup to plot the most important buildings in 3d, chose a nice perspective and then export the bitmap to use for reference in Photoshop. Using that, I draw/paint each house the same way as the little tutorials I did. maybe once I have some time I can give a try to make a tutorial about that... cheers

glad to hear it, how did you learn it, if I may ask?

I taught myself to do isometric cliffs (or a good imitation of), so I thought I'd just draw two opposite cliffs next to each other. It looks pretty bad.XD But the way you do it is definitely the better way to go.

well, it may work as well, though maybe it's a little harder to shade and get depth when using two opposite cliffs..
