Description Time - 3 hours approx

I let myself go a little; it was fun
Still need to work on that. I think I over-rendered this again.

Drawn mostly with brushes I made myself!! ... Well, combined myself, anyway.

Hope you like it!

What brush setting do you use? I really like the effect!

Thank you!
This was actually two or three different brushes' work. I mainly used a textured chalk brush that I downloaded from a fellow Deviant a while back; setting it to size and opacity as controlled by the tablet pen pressure.

Thank you, really!
I'm still falling into the trap of outline-tracing or copying colours when rushing.. but I'm pleased with the painting!

Perhaps instead of tracing, use the grid method. In Photoshop the grid can be easily displayed under the View menu: Show: Grid. That really helps a lot so that you can see where things are. I do that for my super realistic pieces, just to make sure things are where they need to be and proportions are correct. Also, the grid can be changed under the Edit menu: Preferences: Guides, Grid, & Slices. Because you might want to work large first and then smaller for details. The grid can be applied to both the reference image and the painting. I recommend making them the same size so the squares line up.

This article kinda talks a little bit about it, but can be applied to digital paintings as well:

The Renaissances masters used this technique to be more accurate! And they are awesome!

Thanks for that

Actually I'm mostly comfortable with freehand drawing from reference, although that's changing as I haven't done it in a while. Must stop tracing! .. it's more a matter of practicing with lines, colours, painting, shading and so on with these latest works so I traced the outline to allow me to focus more on the overall finish. And for speed and expediency. It's a good idea for proportions though, definitely, so thanks for letting me know that PSCS3 could do it. In 'Paz' I drew freehand then overlaid the original because it was going so very wrong X)

Love, love, love it! You've got realism pretty well nailed down here. I really like the sort of wild aspect it gives the character.

I loved her expression so much. It's even nicer in the sketch, I think, which is why I kept the sketch up here too.

Like this a lot. Especially teeth&lips, eyes/brows.

Maybe slightly more hair detail needed at crown? In some ways it looks like the hair is placed on top of the head, not coming out of it. But that's just me nitpicking... tbh it's really great.

Dkelabirath In reply to mjac [2011-02-12 15:14:11 +0000 UTC]

Love you

I see what you mean, however I stayed moderately faithful to the stock photo (go see it, it's nice) which was similar.. might change the hair sometime. That defeats the purpose of a quick sketch though, eh?

Nopes, it's a painting I did from a stock photo. Thank you for asking though! I wondered if anyone would think so as it resembles the picture of my husband..
