Description The Black Knights are a CITY of HEROES villain group that premiered with the new Night Ward zone in Issue 23.

In doing the concept, I had two key goals:
1. Figure out a series of armor layers that together could cover the whole villain group, from scrubs to bosses AND

2. simultaneously make sure the assets could work on the player models. With the original Medieval set woefully out-of-date and never that historically accurate to begin with, we really wanted to use this opportunity to address those problems and give players something worthy of the era

Definitely a lot of things to accomplish in just one model, but I think we got it right.

Who the main one.

The helmet is pretty clever. Unobstructed peripheral sight, and a small visor to cover the peripheral for added protection.

Thighs look pretty vulnerable.

You got to find the Black Knights in Night Ward at least, but I guess they didn't quite get around to releasing the player parts.

This set is amazing, and the concept art is great! Good to know that this is going to players soon, because I always thought it looked like it was optimized for player characters, but I haven't seen any confirmation elsewhere.

You still out of the loop on a (rough) release date?

DNA-1 In reply to PunkinMang [2012-08-23 20:54:50 +0000 UTC]

Not sure. It's just SOON(tm).

Some porting work would have to be done, but yeah, these were concepted with player conversion in mind. That's as much as I know.

Naturally, not everything that looks like it's made for players can just be copy-pasted to the Costume Creator. Well thanks for responding to my comments, keep up the good work!

I remember when the nightward arcs released there was so much talk about the new enemies. And when people found out excalibur is only for titan weapons there was much wailing and gnashing of teeth. Because it really is an awesome sword design.

I love how the armor works not just for the heavy knights but the lighter staff fighters, and the dark mages too.

Plus I'm quite hopeful it will mesh well with the cyborg bits to make an awesome steampunk robot.

Very well imagined and very well implemented.

Great post--thanks! I hadn't heard that about the sword, but it warms my heart! My hope for the armor is that it'll give people 2 things simultaneously: realistic medieval armor (from the base set) plus a big bulky look that's more fantastical. VERY curious to see how it mixes and matches too.

Well, they announced some version of it at the recent Player Summit. No idea when or how it'll actually be deployed, but stay tuned.

They said as much at the recent Player Summit, but it may be a while before they're officially out. I'm out of the loop on that.

I don't pay much attention to every announcement anymore. If it's not on the launcher I kinda let it slide.

Another absolutely amazing concept!

I so wish we City of Heroes players could get this as a full blown costume set. Yeah, we got the Chain Mail and Leather Armor pieces, but my Super-Knight needs his Plate Mail, dang it!

love it but can i ask you some thing how did you do this wiht out any line in the side

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DNA-1 In reply to zero-okumura [2012-06-28 06:09:21 +0000 UTC]

It's painted in Photoshop and uses no lineart. The trick there is that you need a heavy value contrast between the figure's edge and the background color (here, the figure edge is white and the bg is dark gray). So you get contrast w/out needing a holding line.

Doesn't require a tutorial. It's just a matter of contrast.
