Description In '98 a remake of King Kong was going to come out... and then the American Godzilla happened. At the time, though, I was excited (as I am now about the remake that IS going ahead) and, not knowing who might be cast, made my own 'fantasy football' version of KONG with my favourite cast... well, the Fay Wray casting was the toughest at the time, as there were few blondes with staying power I really liked. Can you guess any of them anyway...? 11x14 on paper (go to my website to link/learn more about this piece).

EDIT: 01-07-07 Brande New Scan from the original artwork.

I love this poster! I remember seeing this years ago on a website. I think it wasΒ called Kong The 8th Wonder of The World if I remember correctly. The entrance to the site featured the logo at the bottom of this poster, only it was mostly in black. If I may ask whatever happened to that site?

No idea... I remember that site - it was fun and he paid me a small fee to use my art on there as a gateway. Good times! Thanks for the kind words and memories!

You are very welcome DocRedfield. I've actually kind of been keeping my eye out for that gateway that he used.

What I really like here is how you incorporated text into the image. I like the way it divides the different scenes. It is very clean and crisp. I love the airplanes in the right hand corner, and also dig the way her leg comes out of the frame, and almost into the tyrannosaurs's jaws. Great job.

Thanks... I still like this one and really want to compose another like it. I should try something with simple, clean forms and lines like this again, as well. The text was necessary and fun to come up with, but perhaps I should use that excuse again some time instead of relying on just photoshop...

Text can be a really great addition to a piece. I'm not good with typography, so I don't do it,.... but for someone like you it's a great idea. You have nice clean lines, great precision, so you can't lose.

I'm going to put my foot in my mouth, but I'm guessing Kim Basinger in the Fay Wray role, Gary Oldman in the Carl Denham role (to the right), and David Hasslehoff as Jack Driscoll (to the left). Yeah, I'm probably totally off, but I don't watch that much television and I don't see that many movies...

I'll tell you what I really like about this the most is the liberal placement of solid black areas that are both subject and background--it's a well-thought out arrangement that has the feel of being powerfully and vigorously (quickly) expressive. I really like it, and as you gaze at it more, it becomes even stronger, as the various shapes become defined and characters and details more clear. Nice work! The new scan looks really good. Your arrangement of sections and panels is top notch, as always.

1 outta 3 aint bad (You got Gary Oldman, MISTER Chameleon himself, as Carl Denham!) Jack Driscoll is played here by Bruce 'Don't call me Ash' Campbell (AKA, Brisco County Jr.), and the girl... As I said I was looking for a beautiful blonde (in '98) with staying power... I was off only a bit when I cast Mira Sorvino... but how was I to know that the beautiful Naomi Watts would come along!?
Thanks for the comments...!

I think we've had this discussion before, but I could be wrong. In any case, Bruce Campbell is obvious now, although I've never seen a "Bruce Campbell" movie. I've seen him in movies, like Spiderman, but that's about it, so he wouldn't have come to mind. And, for a double helping of my naivete in one comment, I'm not really sure who Mira Sorvino is. I google-imaged her, but still didn't recognize her. She looks good in this picture, though.

Great job. I like how you've arranged the images. The woman is my favourite part, and the delicate way Kong is ripping off her clothes. I think ripped clothing is starting to become your trademark

DocRedfield In reply to CaroleHumphreys [2007-01-09 18:07:26 +0000 UTC]

Starting...?! Actually, this piece is from like '98, '99... I just re-scanned it (and think it looks WAY stronger because of it).
Yeah, my wife (then girlfriend) pose for Fay, and the clothes ripping part is something that movie (the original) really instilled in me, I guess. I'm happiest with the collage.

I'm in a learning process with my black and white images, and the more I learn, the more impressed I get by you people who already master the art.

Oz-Muerte In reply to DocRedfield [2006-08-09 08:01:06 +0000 UTC]

I think that's partly because of Disney.
Some people claim Stevens is just lazy. I don't know what the truth is.
What I do know is that there's suppose to be a volume 3... when its ever going to be made is anyone's guess. But yeah there needs to be more, you can't just crossover Rocketeer with The Shadow and then just leave it alone. There's endless possibilities with that character.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

DocRedfield In reply to Oz-Muerte [2006-08-09 17:34:06 +0000 UTC]

Is there a collected volume of ALL the Rocketeer stuff anywhere... I've got the original graphic novel/trade that has the original story, but I also have a follow up comic somewhere that I've never seen re-preinted/collected... and I never heard of a crossover!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Oz-Muerte In reply to DocRedfield [2006-08-09 23:09:15 +0000 UTC]

The first volume trade has the intro by Harlan Ellison. The second volume was the one with the crossover and it was collected in a trade called "Cliff's New York Adventure".
Volume 3 has yet to be produced.
But in volume 2 the crossover happens in issue 1 or 2, where Cliff becomes one of The Shadow's agents. I don't know what happens since I've never finished the story, issue 3 is really REALLY rare, and I've never gotten around to getting the trade.
In that volume the Shadow goes by the alias "Mr. Jonas". Its sort of like how Doc Savage was in volume one, but Stevens didn't come straight out and say it was Doc Savage (probably so as not to get sued). But with Mr Jonas it makes sense since The Shadow goes by so many different aliases, Kent Allard, Lamont Cranston, etc, etc...
Makes me wonder who would show up in volume 3. Indiana Jones?

DocRedfield In reply to Oz-Muerte [2006-08-10 18:02:52 +0000 UTC]

Wow.. thanks for the info. Dark Horse really needs to keep more of their stuff in print, or re-issued. I looked up Cliff's New York Adventure on amazon and ebay, and its going for about $75-100!! That, and I can't get the Xenozoic Tales (Mark Schultz) volumes I want very easily, and both titles contain some of my favorite artists' works...
I never caught the Doc Savage nod... duh.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Oz-Muerte In reply to DocRedfield [2006-08-10 21:10:47 +0000 UTC]

75 - 100!?!?!? Wow...I didn't think it was that high. I should of gotten it when I had the chance.
Yeah Doc Savage was the inventor of the Cirrus X-3. In the movie they changed it to Howard Hughes, again, because of the copyrights issue. But in doing so I think they tapped into an equally, if not more powerful mythology. I mean with all the weirdness that surrounded Hughes, I can actually see him inventing something like that. And you just have to love that "The son of a bitch WILL fly!" remark about the Spruce Goose. That's just good stuff.

Wow is the guy with dark hair Brue Campbell? I love the layout you've done for this pic. While your style is very American comic book (this is a compliment, bare with me) the layout is more Japanese Manga. It really works with the art deco styling that was popular when the film originally debuted. (I think, but it is very art deco, that much I'm sure.) You've done an excellent job with the inking. I bet the real movie poster won't be half as good.

Wow, those are some sweet compliments/comments... thanks. I so often get labelled 'comic book' with my art style, but my roots are just as influenced by 20's-50's illustration style... THat aside, yes, I was going very much for the Art Deco feel for the layout (though I love a lot of contemporary japanese poster art), as that was the original setting of the film, and YES, that is Bruce Campbell as Jack Driscol, Gary Oldman as Carl Denham, and finally Mira Sorvino as Ann Darrow (though in PJ's case, I love his casting of Naomi Watts). Thanks for the compliments on the inking - I enjoy the hell out of it when it turns out like that.
