Was in a bit of a Pertwee-ish mood and I thought to look at this. I still love it. And now that I'm only three stories away from finishing Pertwee, I'm sad to see him go. I don't want him to! Even if the famous Baker is about to work his magic. Baker doesn't use Venusian aikido, nor does he have the awesome dandy clothes (love the blue velvet jacket). What will I do without you Pertwee?

Also Invasion of the Dinosaurs was brilliant! I thought it was going to be silly (though I was still excited for it) but I was wrong. It most importantly made me fall in love with Sarah Jane immediately. She talks the talk *and* she walks to walk. It's sad that I can't see her and three's relationship go farther. Three really has to be my favorite to watch so far.

It's so funny that I say that. I was sad to see Hartnell go, and thought Troughton will never be as good. He's not the original. He's so silly. But when Pertwee came along I said, he's not the funny trickster Troughton is, he's so serious! I must be a real ming-mong to get so attached every time.

It's funny you should say that - this is one of the pieces I was never really happy with...I'm looking forward to Feruary 2013 when I can do him again, and hopefully do it justice. I don't think it's entirely ming-mongish to get attached to Doctors If you sit down and watch them in order, it's amazing how well each actor does in the role, and how sad it is to see them go. I don't think any actor has done a bad job in the part, to be honest.

Invasion Of The Dinosaurs...awesome story. I mean, aside from Sarah Jane being amazing, Yates is a villain!!! Bloody hell, I remember being stunned by that. This guy who's been the Doctor's right hand man for three years turns a gun on him and the Brig! Such a superb story, and all everyone does is talk about how bollocks the dinosaurs are. Who cares, seriously? This story is brilliant. Can't wait to see the colourised version of Part One when it's completed

Langue-Skulptur In reply to DoctorRy [2011-07-21 21:42:08 +0000 UTC]

Yes, I've pretty much gotten past the whole cheesy-dinosaur thing. I am fully and wholly immunized against crap effects now. And man it took me a couple minutes after seeing Yates. I was thinking to myself "Wait. Did what I think just happen just happen?! Yates?! But he's the Brig's right hand man! I'm so confused."

Clearly I caught on fast.

When are all these colourisations coming out? I don't know how I'm going to get them. I've found a way to own all of classic Who, NuWho, Torchwood and SJA. But to my credit I'm only getting the classic. I mean really where else could I get it? Order it to be shipped from the UK, one DVD box per story?

DoctorRy In reply to Langue-Skulptur [2011-07-23 09:31:19 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, crap special effects are a bit meh, but it is easy to get past them. The dinosaurs actually aren't as bad as people make out - the Stegosaurus is pretty cool I thought. And Yates going bad was a shock moment...I forgive you're...er...quick thinking...

Well...yeah, that's what I do to get DVDs...anyway, the colourisations will only be on the DVDs...the BBC doesn't want to pay for it, but 2|Entertain, the DVD company, are happy to, but it means that only they have the colourised versions. Most of the coloured DVDs won't be released until 2013, I think...just to give more time to get them properly done. Planet of the Daleks has already been done, and I think Terror of the Autons also needed it (I think...not sure about that one). The final result is super impressive

Oh wow, I'd love to see that. And I tell you, now that I own classic Who (except for three random episodes), no commercials every five minutes is a blessing! (as I've been watching it online). I can't believe you've been trying to get each story individually. Good lord are they even all on DVD to buy? Do you ship them from the UK? Are they in your local store? 0-0 Oh well.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DoctorRy In reply to Langue-Skulptur [2011-07-23 14:46:15 +0000 UTC]

I'm not "trying" to get each story individually. I had all the stories on video, and now as they are released on DVD I get them to replace the crappy old videos. And, frankly, the DVDs blow my mind. The cleanup work on the stories is absolutely astonishing (holy crap, An Unearthly Child looks like it was filmed yesterday), and the extras...oh, god, Doctor Who is the best television show on DVD for extras. Audio commentaries which are generally fantastic, documentaries that are so insightful and amazing...and some stories have new CGI effects (The Dalek Invasion of Earth with CGI effects is fantastic!). I could buy them online, or download them, or whatever, but the DVDs are the absolute best way of watching them. Blows my mind how amazing they are.

Wow I want to see what you've got! Made yesterday? I wonder if I've seen any of the versions you're talking about and am taking them for granted. Or maybe I really would be blown away? Now I do want to buy the DVDs...

Yup, the cleanup job on An Unearthly Child is spectacular. Maybe you should start saving for the stupdendously huge 200 disc box set that will be released in 2013 to celebrate the 50th anniversary

Langue-Skulptur In reply to DoctorRy [2011-07-24 01:53:33 +0000 UTC]

They're going to release the ENTIRE classic series? Oh good. Let me guess, the price is 1000? I'm really excited for the 50th anniversary. I've never been a part of any kind of 50th anniversary so to have it be a Doctor Who one will be brilliant. Moffat has something good in store for us...

DoctorRy In reply to Langue-Skulptur [2011-07-24 02:00:28 +0000 UTC]

I made that up about the box set I have no idea (though though how awesome would it be if there was one??? I'd love it...)

I'm curious to know what the plans are for the fiftieth anniversary...it's clear that something's going on...what could it be????

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Langue-Skulptur In reply to DoctorRy [2011-07-24 02:45:04 +0000 UTC]

Plans? Well it'll probably involve a huge tv marathon of Doctor Who, followed up by an amazing mind blowing special/season finale. Then I'm sure there will be a real life festival that you and I, not living in Britain, won't be attending.

Perhaps multiple Doctors are involved? Maybe they'll air classic Who on tv?

DoctorRy In reply to Langue-Skulptur [2011-07-24 11:55:16 +0000 UTC]

Speak for yourself I'm gonna try to be in Britain for November, 2013

But all the rest I agree with. Except multiple Doctors...Maybe Tennant, but I doubt anyone else.

Perhaps a showing of An Unearthly Child, The Mind Robber, The Curse Of Pealdon, The Robots Of Death, The Caves Of Androzani, Vengeance On Varos, The Greatest Show In The Galaxy, Doctor Who, The Empty Child and Midnight could precede the 50th Anniversary season

So I was looking through my activity because at this point I think messages from you are getting erased. I could've sworn I missed one before I shut down my computer but I turn it back on and nothing.

I reread this and realized. NOVEMBER?! Oh my god it's on my birthday month!

Do you think Eccleston wouldn't do one episode? He said he had a problem with senior people. I assume a lot of those senior people don't work on DW anymore...

And man I envy you! If I could just hop continents whenever I felt like it. If you do go - take lots of pictures!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DoctorRy In reply to Langue-Skulptur [2011-07-26 07:17:08 +0000 UTC]

Eccleston said earlier this year that there was no chance he was going to do the fiftieth anniversary. It's difficult to know what Eccleston really meant about senior people - did he mean Russell T Davies and Julie Gardner? Did he mean Mal Young? Did he mean Phil Collinson (certainly Collinson suggested that he and Eccleston didn't have a great realtionship). In all fairness, there were probably faults on both sides - Eccleston's expectations were probably unreasonably high and the truth is a lot of people say he's a prick to work with, not just on Doctor Who. But on the other hand, Davies, Gardner and Collinson have all said there were a lot of problems on the first series (I think Davies said that they were three weeks behind schedule before they even started filming!) so there were a lot of issues, and it's never usually just one person's fault.

I can't just hop continents when I feel like it, I assure you - especially now I have two little kids...it's really hard and really expensive But I do hope we can do 2013. Fingers crossed

Langue-Skulptur In reply to DoctorRy [2011-07-26 07:23:06 +0000 UTC]

Hmm maybe I might get the chance. It's on my birth month and my parents say we might visit Europe when I'm out of high school, so this 50th anniversary might just be on the perfect date. Who knows?

It's a shame about Eccleston though :l I actually think it'd be a little weird for 11 to meet 10. Mainly because 9 and 10 were still in a bit of a post-war trauma mode. 9 with his survivor's guilt and 10 with his crazy need to save everyone and end deaths. 11 even said 'we've moved on!'. Now I think 11 is worrying about being an old geezer. I personally now subscribe to the idea that the Doctor is actually a couple thousands of years old (love that Mind of Evil scene with Pertwee) and that he just lies about his age. A lot.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DoctorRy In reply to Langue-Skulptur [2011-07-26 07:40:12 +0000 UTC]

Yeah I know what you mean, but I kinda like the idea about the 10th and 11th meeting...suspect it would be something of a mutual admiration society though Though I could see the 11th Doctor ultimately testing the 10th's patience

The age thing is impossible to reconcile. The seventh Doctor says he is 953 in Time And The Rani, and then he's back to 900 for the ninth Doctor. I go with the thousands too, and agree that the Doctor fibs about his age

Another example of the mid-life crisis, I reckon

So you'll be...what...18 then in 2013? Definitely time for a European vacation

Langue-Skulptur In reply to DoctorRy [2011-07-26 07:43:15 +0000 UTC]

Oh I definitely still want 10 and 11 to meet, just for the fan giggles. I love how 11 and his ganger kept finishing each other's sentences though. It'd be sort of like that.

And nice guess, but 19. Hope the exchange rate turns in our favor though.

I was guessing your current age as 16, but assuming you'd already had your birthday (which was stupid given you said your birthday was in November...epic fail). You are making me feel old though Between you and the girls who model for me, I feel ancient :S

But yes, 10 and 11 - fan dream

Doctor (10): "Timey Wimey..."
Doctor (11): "Wibbly Wobbley"
Doctor (10): "Y'know I was just gonna say that!"
Doctor (11): "Well...great minds, and all that."
Doctor (10): "Thank you very much."
Doctor (11): "Oh no, thank you very much."
Amy: "And he complained about me flirting with myself!"

Loool well compared to the things people my age do in their free time I feel like I'm already in retirement.

And that is awesome. Love Amy at the end. Australian and British humour beats American any day

DoctorRy In reply to Langue-Skulptur [2011-07-26 15:20:25 +0000 UTC]

Ahh, see conversely, compared to people my age I feel like *they're* all in retirement I just put that down to jealousy

I'm having a bout of British humour at the moment, rewatching Blackadder. Easily the funniest television show ever made.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Langue-Skulptur In reply to DoctorRy [2011-07-26 15:23:49 +0000 UTC]

Haha I'm not jealous, but then again I'm in school and when there's school there's summer break. But I spend my summers and weekends out a peaceful lake house where I do nothing but walk and other old-person retirement sorts of things.

Blackadder I've heard of but never seen. I always tell myself I'm not a comedy fan, but really I'm just afraid of tv without plot substance

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DoctorRy In reply to Langue-Skulptur [2011-07-26 15:38:44 +0000 UTC]

I didn't mean you were jealous - I mean't my friends But I have to admit your peaceful lake house does seem a little...err..peaceful.

Maybe you should just embrace the fact that sometimes things are made for no purpose other than to entertain? That's what I've discovered...I remember I went through a stage of being a movie snob (for instance) and only liking movies that were terribly high brow and clever and dismissing movies that were "blockbusters", but now I just think...hey, blockbusters are just nothing more than entertainment. You don't have to read anything into them, you can just sit back and say "ooo...big robots fighting big robots...and knocking down buildings...that's awesome!" Comedy can have plot anyway, even if it's not in-depth...take Big Bang Theory - plot, without any real meaning

And Blackadder...ooh, so funny. I would quote some, but it'd be pointless. And one episode has Tom Baker in it!!! Playing a part that has to be seen to be believed. Oh, and Hugh Laurie who plays House is in two seasons and two episodes! And William "Ian Chesterton" Russell is in an episode and Tim "Planet of the Ood" McInerny is in three seasons and an episode annndd...Rowan "Curse of Fatal Death Doctor" Atkinson is Blackadder. And it's written by the guy who wrote Vincent And The Doctor! What more can I do to recommend it?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Langue-Skulptur In reply to DoctorRy [2011-07-26 15:43:56 +0000 UTC]

Well the Big Bang Theory is super witty and nerdy. The first time I heard the name I said "Oooh is a documentary?"

"No."

"Oh darn. Nevermind, not interested."

Only when I saw it on tv did it become a favorite. I just can't bring myself to spend my free time on 'pure entertainment' tv. I could spend my time educating myself on classic Who and its spin-offs and audios. Or doing that homework that's rapidly approaching due date. Or play Portal which I've had for a couple weeks and haven't played yet (because I'm watching classic Who ).

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DoctorRy In reply to Langue-Skulptur [2011-07-27 04:54:05 +0000 UTC]

Hahah I didn't watch it for ages cause I thought it would just make geeks out to be lunatics. It kinda does, but it's honest so I love it Even more so when they do things that I do all the time

Oh, I just enjoy pure entertainment stuff, because truthfully I don't believe that a lot of the stuff that is out there is anywhere nearly as deep as people make it out to be. You can read things into anything, but it doesn't necessarily mean it's there. I remember Geoffrey Sax being asked about why he thought the Doctor was a metaphor for Jesus Christ in the telemovie. He replied he didn't. They said, "but you have him raising from the dead in a morgue, dressed in a white sheet and then throwing his hands out to mimic being on the cross".

Sax said: "Well...he died. Where else would he be? And he was in a white sheet because that's what they do in morgues. And he threw his hands out to be dramatic. It's nothing more than that."

Sometimes, as a famous person once said, a door is just a door

LOOOL I recall Freud saying (well he probably never actually said it) sometimes a cigar is just a cigar. I used this quote to point out a situation in class during school and everybody just gave me this look. Needless to say, I kept my mouth shut afterwards.

And yes I love the BBT for that reason too. Did you see the Cylon's face on Sheldon's toaster?

I had that brief thought about 8 and Jesus but I think it more applies to that season finale with the Doctor turning into Gollum only to be lifted into the air by humanity's faith in him.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DoctorRy In reply to Langue-Skulptur [2011-07-27 07:06:40 +0000 UTC]

Yes of course, the Freud comment. You're right that's exactly the phrase I was thinking of (not sure why I thought door). I think you have absolutely every right to say what you said in class - good on you for pointing it out That's the slight problem with classes on interpretation - it has to be the "right" interpretation - and there's no right interpretation It's up to the reader/viewer.

Yeah, I love that toaster

And yes, completely agree with you about the Doctor turning into Gollum (one of my most hated parts of that story)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Langue-Skulptur In reply to DoctorRy [2011-07-27 07:32:19 +0000 UTC]

I have only seen that season finale once. I should probably go see it again just for the sake of being a good Whovian. The ending aside, I just hate those depressing post-world taker over situations.

I remember there was this girl in my Chem class who was complaining about never needing to know the chemical formula for sodium hydroxide. Being a fan of chemistry I suggested, "Learning for the sake of learning?" The expression on her face. Priceless. The thought "Are you stupid?" was practically radiating from her. Hilarious!
