Scotland is one of the places that has more sheep than people. In June 2013 the sheep population was 6.57 million on about 14,800 farms, according to the Scottish government. Scotland has 5.3-5.4 million people according to the latest Census figures.

Sheep support wildlife and plant biodiversity. Without sheep grassland, and upland land in particularly, would become overtaken by scrub and coarse vegetation, becoming less valuable to many types of plants, small mammals and ground nesting birds, and at risk of environmental damage by wildfires.

Sheep produce a thick woolly coat called a fleece to protect them from the weather, both hot and cold. Wool is the most sustainable fibre in the world. It’s a natural product of the sheep’s life cycle and the welfare of sheep is improved by them being shorn. An adult sheep produces one fleece per year, which is skilfully removed by a sheep shearer.
