Awesome job, I really love the 2003 version of Astro boy. (The English sub is good but the dub is kinda horrible...)

Great picture; interesting fact about Astro's design: He was only drawn with arm and leg joints in a few drawings.

I learnt it through my How to Draw Astro Boy book, which also talks about the character's evolution.

ooooh thats a really great question haha
I initially had him sitting in the middle with shadow on his right and behind astro, but decided to scrap him altogether in the final cut
I thought it was great that the 2003 series gave him so much character!

Hirpina81 In reply to Donffy [2015-08-25 22:21:42 +0000 UTC]
Yep, I missed him a lot in the 1980s series.
I was expacting HIM under that hood, in the Sultan's palace.
I loved that character, even in the (horrible) English translation, where Dorian Harewood gave him his voice.
His mind is twisted, he runs away from his own nature, madly dreaming about Astro as the king of the robots and he himself turned in a machine... but this can't last long, for a human, can it? And the final weapon against him was not that plasma cannon he gave to his robot-son, but just... love.
A man who can't love, gave birth to a robot who can.
Maybe if you put also Tenma and Shadow among all those character, the group would be a mess; maybe they could hovering on others' heads, with their flying disk/glider/whatever.
But their dark presence would be a bit too much.
I say it again, it's a great work

so deeeep. "A man who can't love, gave birth to a robot who can." - love it!
ive never gotten around to watching the 1980s version, but I plan to check it out eventually!
maybe tenma should just be in his own drawing. It'd be funny tho as he didnt do much else in the original manga (apparently) haha
thanks!

On you-tube there are many episodes of the 1980s series, and even of the older one of 1963.
The best version of the 1980s is - Astro Boy (1980s) - Full Episode 1 (Official & HQ with English subtitles) -;
there are all the episodes: every episode has got its opening and the preview of the next episode. There is the original Japanese dubbing and no cuts.
I also found the Italian dubbing and some episodes in French... but the French version and the English dubbed are cut and I don't like them.
In the original comic of the 1950s - 80s Tenma returned many times, sometimes as an ally, but very often as an enemy, shooting Atom with a magnetic-gun, just to neutralize him...
The worst Tenma ever was the 1980s American Comic one, to tell you the truth.
The most innocent, instead, was the 1980s anime's one.

Yep, there are lots of version of him and his story, and all of them are seen as official... a real mess, indeed, but it's normal, if you see he has been created in 1951.
I am sorry to say that the original videos about the 1980s anime are not available anymore. But stay tuned, maybe they'll return. Now there are some of the English dubbed ones, but the quality is not very high, and the episode 1 and 2 are squeezed together.
There are also many episodes of the 1963s series and lots of images about a 2004s comic (inspired by the 2003s series, but with different situations and scenes). And there's another one, a recent one, made in Brazil, called "Tesouro Verde", where some of the most famous Tezuka's characters meet Mauricio Souza's ones; only available in Prtoguese, and you've got to register. But it's totally free.
There are also ALL the original old comics, from 1951 to the 1980s, rearranged by Tezuka himself, who draws himself and makes the intro of almost each episode. There are the old versions of Atlas and the Blue Knight, of Bem and Atom/Astro changes his features almost in each story... But it's great, expecially in the episodes about Pluto or the time travel.
Many other authors wrote and made stories about AstroBoy. There's also a comic called "Pluto", by Naoki Urasawa. I found the English and Spanish translation. I did not like the final episode, but it's great.
I'll send you some interesting links: copy and put them in safe somewhere.

You're welcome! ^^
Yes, I also like the older ones, I think every version is good in their own way and has a special atmosphere. But this new show... well they put much effort into the background, the animation looks nice and the music seems to be very good too, but I hate what they did with Atom to be honest ...

Thanks so much! It went great haha I really liked the 2003 series, but it was a bit unfortunate the dub decided to mess up the order of the eps :s

Neganium In reply to Donffy [2015-06-30 22:11:59 +0000 UTC]
Ya, the episode order wasn't the only thing that the dub messed up. ^-^;
But, if the dub did not exist, I wouldn't have had even the little bit of exposure to the series that I had when I was younger, watching it on Kids' WB (and I kind of liked it a little bit when I was younger; bit of a guilty pleasure thing, even then, because it was still pretty hokey-looking); thus, I may not have thought too much about it in the month before the movie hit theaters, piquing my interest in this thing from my past and causing me to look it up and do the research (it was quite educational) before I rented the movie when it came out on DVD (that first watch was bland and disappointing; I've since learned to see the charm in it, but it still comparatively sucks).
The 2003 series is my favorite- in regards to the original dub, anyway. It is well written, Atom/Astro is cute as a button (and then some), and most of the series is just so gosh darn pretty! (It's a shame that these subs I torrented are only fairly good about halfway into the series- the rest are HK subs and are almost hilariously wonky; it'd be a lot funnier if I had access to a better alternative, but...)
Anyways, you did good on this picture. It's pretty fantastic; I still haven't gotten the hang of digital painting on my respective programs yet. Dem eyelashes.
And your con thing went well? That's great! I have mixed feelings about the idea of attending a con, myself (not that I ever actually could afford it, but)...

Buh. He's so badly mischaracterized, though... and while much of the main story seems to be intact, there is still a lot of important details that are either handled weirdly, or are just glossed over or added to or just heavily changed in one aspect or another, to the point where what's left loses a considerable amount of emotional impact.
Hm, I kind of like it. It's... different than what we've seen before. Plus, the animation is a real charmer.
Man, I know, man; but I'm pretty sure that I'd die!! (And that's not just the paranoia talking; I would not be able to do this by myself but I don't know any people irl) Also, how do save up when not have income?? (Although I'm trying to fix that... legalese is complicated, tho...)
