Description A mother Mechanoid Armadillo led her waddling brood across the intensely hot desert floor, pausing to check their progress every so often. The young were more spherical in shape than their mother- the typical Mechanoid Armadillo only "bottomed out" (as it had been termed by scientists) once they reached middle age.
One of the juveniles stopped to graze, and its mother frowned until it moved on. The young were feeding on solids, and would not be fully weaned onto their adult liquid diet of ethanol for several months. Ethanol pumps were few and far between, and staffed at often irregular and unpredictable hours. Mechanoid Armadillos told campfire horror stories of a desperately empty armadillo, that with sheer relief chanced upon an ethanol station in the desert, only to find it closed because of a public holiday. The armadillo expired on the spot; whether from frustration or starvation, it was uncertain.
With this in mind, now and then the mother armadillo would cast her eye towards her fuel gauge, reassuring herself that she had plenty in reserve before shuffling off again.

Acrylic and a smudge of pastel on illustration board; 15.5 x 35 cm.

This was just supposed to be a small, quick painting done on a scrap of board left over from larger works. But the plates of the mother armadillo gave me so much strife that this work ended up being far more touble than it was worth.

Absolutely adorable! I saw this in elfwood and had to investigate further. Your choices of colors (the blue and the orange) are stunning and all levels of juxtaposition in this picture are well delivered. Beautiful work with a fun twist

These armadillos are ADORABLE... I love the baby in the center with the big buggy eye the best I can see why those chrome plates drove you mad... they look incredibly difficult Nevertheless, that just makes this picture all the easier to appreciate! Love the color scheme, the alternation between silver and red and blue... it looks like west Texas... And I love the armadillos' faces and their antennae... they're WONDERFUL! Great job! And definitely a fave on my part

The metal does look a little plastic-y, but do we really expect metal to survive in the desert without some kind of scratch- and water-proof coating? You ment to do that, didn't you, you sneakily fantastic artist you.

Dot flowers! DOT FLOWERS! Oh, how I love the dot flowers! The foliage is so pretty!

And so the people see yet another of Donna's overwhelming talents- Metal. Incredible job! They all look so shiny and wonderful. I don't suppose that such a caring mother would let her darling children get rusty, now, would she? The whole family is very loveable. You create the weirdest things, and they're always so cute! Cute, yet believeable. It's as if... If your critters suddenly became real, they could still survive and function with the form you've created for them. Serious skill! And you never fail at it!

And as per usual, all embellished with your fun, vivid description. You're a real meal deal!

Hmmmm... Not your most interesting background, but it really serves. The way the oranges gradate (word?) into the backdrop gives an excellent feel of searing heat, but that darned blue sky really pops it! I know you like red deserts with blue skies, and I know that's how they really can look, but the combination seriously bugs me. Eeh, personal preference.

Your art will always be freakishly awesome to me, whatever color you make the desert sky. Great job!

donnaquinn In reply to Peachfuzz [2005-09-28 00:42:36 +0000 UTC]

If you like, I'll send you some dot flowers on your birthday. They're probably born out of lazinesss as much as anything else... but I like them too.
The metal does cheese me off a bit, so I've called it bio-metal. Not quite metal, but not quite plastic. Something weird inbetween, but I agree with you that the shininess is appealing. Either way, it's up to those armadillos to sort out now! Muhaha!
If I am a meal deal, then what do you get with the 50c upgrade? It scares me to think of it.
You will love my next words: I agree with you about the sky. I don't mind the bright blue, but in this case it was born out of necessity rather than preference. The acrylic sky sucked, so I decided to put some pastel on it. I only had three blues in the pastel, really pale, the blue of the sky, and some sort of dark indigo. So the middle one had to do; the initial scrylic sky had been several shades lighter and more greyish. Next desert scene, I'll do a green, red or orange sky. Should be cool.
Thankyou very much for another truly awesome comment!
