Description Among the wee folk community, Dwarf Rabbit Gremlins rarely evoke fond memories in the minds of those who have had dealings with them. Petty criminal acts such as super-gluing coins to crowded sidewalks, souping up cars that are better off as scrap metal, and occasional indecent exposure (did you notice that none of these gremlins are wearing pants?), have resulted in many being arrested and gaoled over the years. Of course, being so small, escape from prison is easy for the gremlins and is usually made within minutes, the sewer pipe being the preferred route. Less adventurous gremlins opt for slipping between the bars and strolling a merry gauntlet of armed guards and saliva-fanged dogs.
The authorities are reluctant about labeling escaped Dwarf Rabbit Gremlins as "at large" for fear of causing confusion in the populace.

Acrylic on illustration board, 25 x 40 cm.

This car was a few streets down from where I live, and it looked so interesting I immediately wanted to paint it. I've done too few mechanical things, so this was a nice change from the natural/ landscape backgrounds that usually accompany my stuff. If you are able to identify the make of this car, you have too much time on your hands. According to the owner, it was going to be repaired, though it disappeared from his house a few days after the photos were taken. Lucky me! I almost missed out on painting it.

Hmmm, ok, the wheels are making me think it's a chevy S-10 pick-up, but the bumper doesn't really look like an s-10, but it's shape reminds me of an old Dodge Shadow, or an 80's subaru...

That aside, you did a pretty damn good job on getting the detail of that junker. Love how you added the damage of its superstructure and all the other details. Oh, cute critters by the way.

yep, got to this

Thankyou very much for the comment; it's an old Torana that has now disappeared from the owner's yard. Thanks for saying the critters are cute, too. Cheers.

Wow Donna!! The details in the car are simply amazing! All the colours you've used to show the dents and various broken parts are awesome, and I really love the cobweb! Also, those little gremlins are so cute!

Wow! That car has so much personality... I'm SO glad you caught a picture of it before it disappeared I ADORE the colors, I LOVE the realism... In a way I sort of wish the little monsters weren't there because the car looks so darn good I really feel that I could reach out and touch the car... fantastic job!!

I sort of agree with you- I painted around outline of the gremlins and left them till last, and I didn't expect the car to turn out the way it did. I was disappointed with the relative lack of realism in the gremlins, but I just wanted to finish it. I sort of wish they weren't there sometimes too!
Thankyou for the lovely comment!

how do you get your acrylics to work for you like that?
Love it! (as usual)

At the moment, I work on my pictures from front to back (usually) and I don't really use washes anymore, just opaque paint. I thin all my paints with just a drop or two of water to make them flow a bit, but not so they're runny. I tend to work sort of like a "colour-by-numbers" in that I really try to keep it neat at all times so I don't obliterate the lines underneath. If I'm painting a sky or something, I just let it go a bit messy though.
I use a lot of black and white, and payne's grey and burnt/ raw umbers. This one turned out a bit better than my other works, because I used a photo reference. I use small brushes most of the time, a no. 7 for large areas, a no. 2, and 00 and 000 for tiny details.
I'm trying to think of what else I do. I place the middle tone down first, then put darks over it, and highlights last of all. I do a lot of wet-on-dry mixing, but I guess with acrylics there's not much time for wet-in-wet blending anyway.
I have no idea if any of this would be of any help to anyone, so I'm sorry if it's just a load of babbling, or acrylic 101-esque.
Oh, it's a Torana, and thankyou Caroline!

This is priceless, very well done. You may have just saved all the rusting junk my hubby has behind his workshop! Now I'll be seeing gremlins everywhere instead of redbacks, snakes and scorpions!!!
You know I had a Torana once, it sure kept me awake when driving - no brakes when raining, bits falling off, smoke coming from under the dash, all that fun stuff to freak you out, had a good motor though, went like mad(gosh that was a long time ago).
Love the little gremlins, they remind me of the cheeky little green guy with the sticky feet in the tyre ads on TV(the ones with Brocky).

Isn't Brocky a mean jerk to that little guy (I think it might be a gecko, but it's a mighty fluorescent gecko if it is)! He kicks it and smacks it off with the windscreen wipers.
Thankyou for the comment Wendy.

You never know if that car has a mysterious power which compels the gremlin-folk to venerate the primordial six-cylindered rust-beast. :3
