Description One of the final tasks for school this year.Β
We had to illustrate two texts of an already existing children book: a short one and a really long one. It was a bit hard to get started and actually get something done, but in the end I really loved making it.

This is a watercolour painting of the squirrel for a page of the long story. I've done everything tradtional, with certain elements like the main characters independantly from eachother so I could throw them all together on Photoshop in their environment. Makes it easier for me because otherwise I'd have to paint environments around the characters and I was afraid I'd mess details like the toes up when it got wet again.
The painting here is just under 10x10 cm (4x4 in) IIRC, on the final work it's smaller.

A few commenters have pointed out that this looks like a chipmunk, but chipmunks are a clade of ground squirrels so you're not wrong at all. Nice work!

Yeah, the problem is just in the translation. In Dutch we have only one word to name them all (eekhoorn = squirrel). For the species name we just add something in front of it, in chipmunks their case "wangzakeekhoorns" which means "cheek pouch squirrels".

Looks more like a chipmunk but still really cute.

It is, just something that went lost in translation. And technically chipmunks are squirrels since they're part of the ground squirrels as Albertonykus pointed out above.

Β One learns something new every day - I didn't even know there was such a thing as a striped squirrel! (being a Briton the only squirrels that I have caught sight of are our native reds and those brash American immigrants).Β

Yeah, we don't have those either in Belgium. What you have here is a chipmunk.

Β I thought as much, but I wasn't entirely certain and did not wish to second-guess your title! (if one remembers correctly I first saw chipmunks in Ontario a few years after the Millennium).Β

is this not a chipmunk?

Yes, but as explained above by Albertonykus they are part of the ground squirrels so they are still squirrels.
I also said squirrel because in Dutch we only have one word to name them all. I thought people would get it in English, but apparently you only call them chipmunks while I thought otherwise.

heh, never knew that
i call them chipmunks because i watched chip and dale when i was small and i also see a lot of american things, not sure if English people say chipmunk or not

I'm not sure either... I think they do though, it's the common English name.
