do you have any tips for me? i'm frustrated with my inability to draw stuff off the top of my head. the only way mine look good is if i have a reference pic.

Oh gosh, I usually draw from a reference pic too. But if you are drawing from the top of your head, try thinking about someone you know who looks similar. It helps to get the base work done 'cause you know exactly what that person looks like. Then you can add in the bits that look like the person you're drawing from memory. It's hard to draw without a reference if you ask me though.
