All Mai wanted to do was brood in her dark little room. Brood and cry and be alone. Fortunately for her, this was possible; the Day of Black Sun invasion attempt had been a failure, so most of the Fire Nation rejoiced, festivities abounding. She would have been out there partying with them, decorating Prince Zuko’s arm and smiling… except Zuko had left her, had turned his back on the Fire Nation entirely. And he hadn’t even had the nerve to tell her to her face, all she had been left with was a letter - less than a page long!- signed by a spineless, traitorous coward.

She had felt her heart shatter a thousand times over as she read the letter again and again, trying to believe that it wasn’t true, that the letter was a bitter lie. She ran to the palace, frantic, searching for her prince. She was going to show him for playing such a nasty prank on her. Yes, a nasty prank was what it was. But you didn’t mess with a person’s heart like that, not when that person had an arsenal of sharp objects at their disposal.

But Azula confirmed her fears. Zuzu had really left; he was a fool and a traitor. He would not be shown mercy a second time. Mai gulped and bit her lip, holding back her emotions like she had been trained to do, excusing herself and dashing back to her house. She had shut herself up in her room and refused to leave, no matter how cheerful it sounded outside and no matter how much Ty Lee asked for her to come out. She was too depressed to want to have anything to do with anyone.

Before now, Mai didn’t realize that a single sheet of parchment could cut deeper than any of her knives.
