Description I'm doing my best to find ways to wrap the smaller cabs in my collection. this tiny little gem (for a wirewrapper, it's tiny) measures 7mm by 12mm. My usual techniques simply overwhelm these small stones. I opted for a more formal prong setting, something I can finally do with reasonable symmetry, and then made everything else as asymmetric as possible. I didn't measure the final piece, but estimate is about 4.5cm, give or take bail to tip. The wrap is 22g gold filled square wire.

more curlies? lol nice i like how the wire forms a wave-like look to it, also the color and shape of that lapis. I wish mine were that pretty lol. i got tiny fingers coz im tiny and underweight (by like 30+ lbs. underweight, and like a foot or so smaller ) for my age (sucks coz i get trampled and beat at games in PE) but i don't think i could have done something like this. Every time I wrap something, my pliers end up making dent marks in the wire! The smallest cab i have is like 10x15 mm! yours is super tiny then lol. I usually wrap larger stones and cabs, like 30x20 mm, ect. Really pretty though i love it

Larger stones are definitely easier to wrap. they are the best to learn on. I didn't try any of the smaller stones until I had about 300 wraps under my belt. I still leave marks from pliers occasionally too, but that's what sand paper and burnishing tools are for. Not too many things you can't buff out or cover!

lol yeah I agree, and that's a lot of wraps. And sand paper? never thought of that... lol

not just any sandpaper! ultra fine. 2000 grit or finer followed by polishing cloth to give a shine.

that's some great curves you've got down below the stone

this style turned out great, though I imagine it took quite a while

Cool. Looks like it'd make a great stick pin.

Do you ever work with smaller size wire? I've done 5x7mm pieces, but used 24 or 26 ga wire. Not that this setup isn't gorgeous, but just something to think about

On my next wire order I will get some smaller gauge. I have only used 24 and 26 on trees of life or earrings. I have a few more of this size cab. May make some brooches next. I have applied for a local juried art festival. If I get a booth, I'll be a wirewrapping fool for the next 8 weeks.

Good luck with the fesitval.

How are you planning to make the brooch?

The brooches I've made in the past started as pendants, then I attach the pin to the back or convert what I would have made into a bail into the pin.

Holy moly, that's a tiny stone! It looks GORGEOUS in the wrap you came up with. Love the swirly bits at the end.

My hands or my wire are going to have to shrink to use some of the smaller cabs I have. I have some really pretty green onyx, tigers eye and turquoise, all less than 1cm. some are chips I'll just have to use in a micromosaic some day. I'm bound and determined to figure a way to wrap the 3 by 5's though. I don't get into a swirly mood often, but this one suited the stone well. Glad you thought so too! thanks very much!

I know, right? I have a TON of small cabs that I need to figure out how to wrap and I have a stash of small gemstones that I need to figure out too. Smaller hands would be wonderful indeed - and I'm saying this even though I have pretty small hands to begin with! ^^
