Thanks. When I make prints I actually write the haiku on the pic, cause I meant them to be one piece of work. Glad you think it fits.

The chlosterphobic feel of this really grabs me, as I don't do well in crowded places. Makes me wanna whip out a chainsaw and get everyone away from me. But really... I'm nice!!

Your technique is so detailed and from what I can see- flawless. Very very impressive. The only thing I kind of missed as I looked at the image, and this totally depends on the city in which you live- is a multicultural aspect. Nothing to pick on, just something I noticed

Awesome stuff, my friend and thanks for showcasing it in the asylum!

Thanks very much for all the positive comments. As far as the race/culture aspect, it's certainly something i should keep in mind. I live in LA which is about as multicultural/multiracial as cities can get - even though the cultures seem as seperated as cliques in a high-school cafeteria sharing the same space without actually interacting on anything but a cursory level. Which is why - when I was putting in the different people who I interact with regularly, most of the characters I wanted to portray to tell the story wound up caucasion.

I kinda figured you were drawing what you saw... I guess I'm just in the business of having to pay attention to that for marketing purposes. Certainly isn't a slam on you... hope you didn't take it that way. I love your stuff and you blow my mind with your talent. And no, I'm not kissing your ass- I don't do that.

Yes...this is the feeling i used to get sometimes, when in lived in the city. Breathing became a chore....i have physical problems with my lungs.

The crowded feeling of this painting describes, so well the suffocating closeness that happens in the city. Very well done.

thanks for letting me know you can personally relate to elements of the piece. that means I'm achieving some of the things I'm trying to do. you never know if some things connect to others the way you hope.

Words and picture are great and - sadly - so full of truth!
Life goes on around you, doesnΒ΄t matter what happened. ThatΒ΄s the city. Everybody tries to stay anonym and out of trouble...
Cowards...
2000 years of civilization and... what did we create?
Cowards...

Well mapped story in painting/drawing/writing form. It's well put together and says a lot with each person built into it as a chapter in the book all with a central character. Genius isn't always big and bold shoutboxing on the street corner. Excellent work.

hmmm. 'very busy'? Is it TOO busy in your opinion? Does your eye not know where it should go? Or does the level of detail simply provide new things to notice upon a closer look? (hope, hope...) Please, let me know either way.

Thank you. 8/10 huh? HOW DARE YOU!?! YOU @*$@(*^$@... IT'S A 10 AND I WILL ACCEPT NOTHING LESS!!! Just kidd'n. I'd love to hear what would you like to see improved in future pieces, so I can try and nab those two elusive points?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 0

specialjake [2005-11-06 17:51:55 +0000 UTC]

the textures are amazing, but im having trouble figuring out exactly what this is trying to say. Is the person in the center a zombie and people are afraid of him, or is it someone that has just recently been shot and in need of help but people are too busy with their own selfish lives to help him?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

DrabRats In reply to specialjake [2005-11-12 05:59:50 +0000 UTC]

He's just been beaten, shot and stripped of everything and life goes on around him as he stands there in shock, just trying his best to remain breathing. The people around him are all having different reactions to him - if you look closer you'll see that not all of them are indifferent. But, basically - and I say this having had everything I own including all my writing, storyboards, clothes, CD's, books, car... everything - stolen about two weeks ago. Living in the city can beat the hell out of you, and when it does, some people will be sympathetic, some will be uncomfortable and not know how to respond to you, some would rather ignore you, but in the end it's just you that's taken the beating and you're the one who has to fight to stay on your feet, because all of those peoples lives will go on - the city will go on - pretty much the same, regardless of what happens to you... Yikes!!! That's a long winded and depressing description of what I was going for, but, hey, you asked for it.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

specialjake In reply to DrabRats [2005-11-12 17:34:48 +0000 UTC]

Yes, I did ask for it and I'm glad you told me. Wow, now that I've heard how deep and meaningful this drawing is, It seems to take a life of its own. It's almost like a completely different drawing in how i look at it. Or maybe I'm just being corny...
Either way I'm truly sorry about what happened to you, however your attitude about getting up and standing on your own two feet is comforting, and forlack of a better word very admirable.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

DrabRats In reply to specialjake [2005-11-12 20:18:00 +0000 UTC]

thanks. I'm stoked it transformed into something new for you. I hope your not just being corny - I'd like to believe the stuff you're seeing now is stuff I put in there.

question: did you read the haiku in artists comments?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

specialjake In reply to DrabRats [2005-11-14 04:20:45 +0000 UTC]

It really did do that, what i really meant was i hope what i was writing didnt sound corny. I read the haiku, but it didnt answer my orignal question so i decided to ask. Both the artwork and the haiku are a lot more meaningful now.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

DrabRats In reply to specialjake [2005-11-14 06:31:17 +0000 UTC]

cool. anytime you are wonderin' what something is about feel free to ask. If there is a haiku, it should give some clue what direction I'm leaning but I don't want to tell people how they should interpret the work - unless they ask - so, the words tend to "talk around" the specifics. If you're ever feeling like you don't 'get it' it or you just want to know exactly what a piece means to me, I will do my best to answer. Also if the haiku doesn't shed any light on what path your interpretive brain should follow, I'd like to know that too because they are supposed to go together as a single piece and if the words don't begin to clarify the idea/feeling behind the piece, I'd like to refine them. (when I'm eventually done with this series of pieces, the haiku will actually be written on the peice or displayed with it as a caption)

"Tomorrow will be even worse." I agree... I feel bad for that guy...... really.. Awesome comp and everything. Is there some kind of class related to drawing faces so effectively?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

DrabRats In reply to moltres [2005-11-11 22:10:46 +0000 UTC]

Wow, you pay attention to the details - I wonder how many others have looked that close at the paper. In regard to your ? Aside from simply taking an anatomy class, reading "How to draw comics the Marvel way', and stealing bits and pieces from several of your favorite artists... For, capturing expression and personality of the characters you're drawing, I would suggest... acting class. I love acting and have done it as a hobby for years. When I'm drawing a character, I often find myself absent-mindedly acting out their expression and attitude. I don't do it in a mirror (or even on purpose most of the time) I just do it and translate how it feels on my face, into the lines I put on the page.

DrabRats In reply to pandroid-ishy [2005-11-11 22:00:17 +0000 UTC]

Thank you!!! It's nice to hear that someone is putting the words together with the picture. When there's a haiku in the artist's comments, the words and pic are meant to be one piece - viewed together, but almost no one ever comments on the words.
