Description Dragón oriental costero (Dralophus maritima):
---------------------------------------- -------------

::::ENGLISH TRANSLATION AT LAST!::::

Oriental coast dragon (Dralophus maritima):
---------------------------------------- -----------

With his hydrodinamic and flexible body, and coast habits, the oriental coast dragon would be the draconic equivalent of seals.

Even with that, their bodies are protected only with hard scales, they lack of any thermic insulating of fatty tissue (unlike seals). Because of that, their distribution are is limitated to tropical areas, of warm waters. They prefer sand beaches or with round rocks.

Due to their extremely flexible and long body, perfectly hydrodinamic, they snake easily among the clean coast waters in search of fish (their principal food). They also have been seen feeding of small bivalves. They hunt mainly with their sight. They have a perfect sight underwater thanks to a nictitant membrane that covers their eyes underwater. They are also aid by three pairs of long sensitive moustaches that they keep extended when diving. With them, they can receive small electromagnetic variations and are able to hunt fish in muddy waters or with not much light. For swimming and diving , they undulate their bodies laterally, and the are aided of a strong tail, stout in the first part, but flat like a row in its terminal half.

In the ventral zone, the have big and strong imbricated scales, that protect the belly when crawling outwater over the sand or rocks. The rest of the skin is covered with tiny and smooth scales. The skin base colour is blue, and over this blue they have a characteristic dotting: white over the low side, and dark blue or black over the upper side. The base blue in youngs is much darker blue, almost black, and it goes lighter as they grow. The oldest dragons are pale blue. The dotting is characteristic and unique of individual.

This colour pattern is not a chance, because, then swimming, seen from below they will be light, mimetizing with sky background light. Seen from above, they will be dark, mimetizing with the dark marine bottom. This camouflage works with preys that dive under the dragon, but no from above, because the back side is covered with a white mane. This is like that because adults have not many natural enemies, and have no necessity of the camouflage on their upper side. The young ones, more vulnerable, have not this white mane, been their camouflage, therefore, perfect.

With gregarious and sedentary habits, they live in small familiar groups in sand beaches. However, they are not strongly territorial, and sometimes several families have been seen sharing the same beach zone, above all in breeding season. Even in that times, argues are very unusual, and the only growls that can be eared on the beach are the younger playing.

In breeding season, there are set stable couples between adolescent individuals. Normally, is the female who choose the male. Before the mating, the female place the eggs in a hole in the sand, and she buries them, both parents taking care of the nest during three weeks. The youngs when hatched are 70-80 cm long, small copies of their parents, but almost black and with no mane. In 5 or 6 years the reach sexual maturity, with 5 metres females and 6 metres males. The oldest can live up to 25-30 years and 8-9 metres long.

It is a relatively common species, although it has a quite restricted habitat, because of that it has been protected for several years. They have not much natural enemies, and they are not afraid of humans and are not elusive. One can walk careless along the beach and film them, without fear of been attacked (except you intend to hurt them or their youngs, of course). They are very curious, and the usually come near the people to sniff out and snoop for a while, before losing the interest, above all the youngest ones.

...uff... sorry if it is something wrong. My english sucks.

Heheh. I'm too lazy to try translating right now, so I'll just drool over the picture ~_^ it looks awesome, wingsis! It's nice to see you again (like I should talk...I haven't posted something in eons. Maybe I'll through up one of the stories for my girlfriend *hmmms thoughtfully* Ack! Back to you!) My compliments on the coloration as well *grins* I know it's more for camoflauge than anything else, but being a blue dwaggie i can't help but be a little prideful

Thanks ^_^ i love the colouring in this pic too.

Sorry about the lack of submissions/connecting lately, but I really have no time with University work.... Now I'm doing a work about cancer and another one about biodiversity

BTW, i love this kind of pictures, because it is a mixture between the things I love: drawing and biology. I mean... I invent a species and then work describing it's biology, ecology, behaviour, etc. I'm going to create a paralel world

And what about you? how is life going? and your girlfriend? I bet she loves your stories more than me

*chuckles* no apologies. I should be apologizing more than you. For the rest of our gossipping, including the startling fact that I have somehow acquired a girlfriend, I shall write a note to you with a big long column of info hehe ^^
