This is my entry for =Sirfy 's Lotheren contest.

Just so you know, a troglobite is something that only lives in caves and cannot survive out side of a cave.

There are probably a million spelling errors in this, but I'll need to fix those later.

There is something I forgot to mention that is visible, but not obvious in the images of the membranes. There are two layers of membranes, but they connect to each other near the upper spine or furthest digit.

Those of you who are familiar with some of my characters may notice some similar concepts here, particularly from Agnirin with the purpose of the membranes (the structure is a bit different) and the hair structures are derived from Kyro (which I mention briefly in the comments of his temporary ref). The elastic tissue is also something from another one of my species that I really haven't disclosed much about.

Some of the ideas I used here I had initially planed to use, like the Burning, and some I just came up with along the way. Actually the Burning idea worked out better than I had planed, because I had forgotten about the heat sensing eye, and I was able to give it a use other than defense (which is how Kyro uses it.) Later I got a good chuckle after realizing that the females were attracted to the "hottest" male. Anyway, that wasn't the only thing that I added just because it seemed cool but then later had a use. The ridges in the face where just little details I added when I inked it. They didn't become anything special until I realized that it would be hard to aim for bats with a single eye. The little notches in the chin horn and the jaw pouch are the same story. They looked neat, and then I gave them a useful purpose.

Oh and the whole compression wave thing I came up with to get around giving them ears. While technically, the sensors can be called 'ears' (since sound is a compression wave), and they are quite sensitive to the presence of sound, they can't distinguish between different types of sounds. I decided to allow them to sense the flapping of bat wings, instead of sensing their calls, because the method could be used for hunting other prey, and using echolocation against bats just seemed like an easy way out (as there are existing animals that already do that.) Also a change in the angle of the sound of the wings will tell a Troglobite Lotheren that the bat has changed direction sooner than the next time the bat calls.

Goddamn: After reading what you wrote and studying what you drew, I'm at the point where I might actually believe one of these things existed somewhere! The anatomy and evolutionary background behind its physical appearance are so solid that I'm in awe. Beautifully done species ref. I'm curious though: are the colored illustrations hand-colored with traditional materials and then altered in photoshop? If so, what did you use?

Thank you. I wrote down everything I could think of.

I colored the main image in Open Canvas, and assembled the ref in Paint Shop Pro. It's easier for me to get an almost water color like coloring in OC than most other programs. Though it did make it so that I had to erase all of the negative space in the membranes.

Holy Poop. Your character sheets never fails to impress me. You think of EVERYTHIG. I find it hard to believe that this isn't real with the amount of detail you put into it.
