Description
ASEprite, 42 Colors, 2 Layers, 24 HoursThis...this is a personal project I've been working on for the past week or so. After playing tons of Zelda Classic (fantastic game) I began to question the graphics of many people's custom quests...usually people just use art from the 8-Bit Zelda games or they edit 16-Bit sprites. Most of the original spritework in Zelda Classic quests is very poor, so I set out to create my own sprite set. I had trouble deciding on an idea, though, so I looked throughout Zelda's history to find inspiration. And it struck me...why not make sprites based off of the ACTUAL original artwork?

Unsurprisingly, like in many NES games, the original artwork looks faaar from the game's sprites. The heads are far bigger and the designs are more clear, but a lot of the sprites lost a ton of their original detail. But you might say "But the original dot artists only had 4 colors to work with!" Humbug! The only limit of art is your creativity, so it was inexcusable the in-game art looked so far from the official art. After deciding on my theme, I set to work using the gallery you see above. Some sprites came out looking better than the NES ones, many lost a lot of their charm. Nevertheless, I feel these sprites are as close as one can get to attaining a look similar to the original art, and I'd like to see if anyone can do a better job.

On a final note, I am aware all of the necessary animations are not present. I originally planned to make ALL of the animations and items and tiles, but it seemed like too much work, and I was already worn thin by the time I finished this. But that doesn't mean I'll never finish this sheet! If someone wants to help me out, or if there is enough demand, I will make all of the necessary animations for this sheet so it may be used for custom quests in Zelda Classic 2.5.

These are quite well done, but I think you ought to do a little more research before you criticize the original artists so harshly.
If you were to investigate the graphical specifications of the NES, you'd find that these tiles would be quite impossible to put in the game.

No thanks? I don't make Zelda Classic content anymore. Hardly anyone ever used the content I made so I don't see the point in continuing to make it.

They look spot on to the designs of the characters, I'm very impressed with the work involved in this sheet the small scale makes it very difficult to work with and you did pull it off well. You did keep it very similar to the original artwork and for that I applaud you, well done

Thanks a lot! Yeah, I'm actually pretty satisfied with how well these designs scaled down. At first I thought the NES sprites looked so chunky because they HAD to look that way, but it turns out it was just the limited palette and general neglect of offical art refs. :/

It's always hard to work on sprites without good artistic references but you did well without them. They do look official and I would believe them if they were to appear in a game you're very welcome!
