Description I've always loved Anne McCaffrey's "Dragonriders of Pern" series. I decided to doodle her dragons on my notebook while I was bumming around my university like the terribad student I am. I drew them as I picture them, but I tried to allow for differences between the colors. For those who are not aware, there are 5 different dragon colors in Pern: Gold, Bronze, Brown, Blue, and Green. Golds and greens are female, the others are male. The Golds are queens and are the only females capable of reproduction, and generally only mate with bronzes, although greens do rise to mate (they are rendered sterile by the firestone they chew to produce flame.) Golds are the largest in size, followed by bronze, brown, blue and green. I drew a bronze and a green, and if you notice, I tried to make the head of the green a bit more angular, and the bronze a bit more sturdy and rounded, to imply the strength of the bronze versus the natural agility of the green.

I also did a quick sketch of an adolescent dragon, somewhere in its second year, between hatchling and adulthood.

Obviously, these are not your traditional dragons- they have faceted eyes and little knobs, etc. The back-story here is that they're genetically engineered and given the title "dragon" because they have similar wing structure and reptilian attributes to the mythological dragons of Terran origin. However, this is a science fiction series that takes place on a planet similar to Earth, but with different indigenous species. So, long story, bear with me. Don't be all "But, why doesn't it have horns!?"

Also, totally read the books. They are amazing, and the dragons are such lovable characters. They're telepathically bonded with their riders, and are really quite whimsical when they aren't defending the land from a mindless, carnivorous space-organism that devours all living things if not destroyed by fire.

Oh yes. Pen sketch, 30 minutes.

Thank you! I think if I draw more of them, I'm going to make them a little more streamlined/graceful, but overall, I was quite satisfied, for a pen drawing.

That sounds like a great idea. You can tell you've put a lot of thought and time into these. I especially like the details on the snout and neck.

It's a shame I didn't know you could draw so well back in college. It would have been nice to have someone to go to to just talk about creative ideas with.
